Passivation of organic light emitting diodes with a-$SiN_x$ thin films grown by catalyzer enhanced chemical vapor deposition

  • The characteristics of a $SiN_x$ passivation layer grown by a specially designed catalyzer enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CECVD) system and electrical and optical properties of OLEDs passivated with the $SiN_x$ layer are described. Despite the low substrate temperature, the single $SiN_x$ passivation layer, grown on the PC substrate, exhibited a low water vapor transmission rate of $2{\sim}6{\times}10^{-2}\;g/m^2/day$ and a high transmittance of 87 %. In addition, current-voltage-luminescence results of an OLED passivated with a 150 nm-thick $SiN_x$ film compared to nonpassivated sample were identical indicating that the performance of an OLED is not critically affected by radiation from tungsten catalyzer during the $SiN_x$ deposition.

고효율 장수명의 Flexible OLED 디스플레이를 위한 in-situ Passivation System 개발 (Development of in-situ Passivation System for High Efficiency and Long Lifetime of Flexible OLED Display)

  • 본 연구에서는 OLED 소자 및 패시베이션 박막을 하나의 시스템에서 동시에 제작하여 진행할 수 있는 in-situ passivation 클러스터 시스템을 개발하고 이러한 시스템을 이용하여 OLED 디스플레이 제작 및 특성을 연구함으로써 플렉시블 디스플레이에 적용할 수 있는 기술을 구현하였다. In-situ passivation을 이용한 OLED의 제작 및 특성 분석에 관하여 연구하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, In-situ 시스템으로 OLED 소자 제작 및 박막 패시베이션 가능한 시스템을 자체적으로 구축하였으며, 패시베이션 박막을 제작하여 그 특성을 평가한 결과 본 시스템의 응용 가능성을 제시할 수 있었다. 둘째, $SiO_2$, SiNx 무기 박막을 PECVD 방법으로 제작하여 OLED 패시베이션 박막으로 적용 가능성을 확인하였다. 본 연구결과, in-situ passivation 시스템의 적용 가능성을 확인할 수 있었고, 플렉시블 디스플레이에 적합한 패시베이션 방법으로서의 구현 가능성을 제시하였다.

  • In this paper, we have deposited silicon nitride films by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). For films deposited under optimized conditions, the mechanism of plasma-enhanced vapor deposition of silicon nitride is studied by varying process parameters such as rf power, gas ratio, and chamber pressure. It was demonstrated that organic light-emitting diode(OLEDs) were fabricated with the inorganic passivation layer processing. We have been studied the inorganic film encapsulation effect for organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). To evaluate the passivation layer, we have carried out the fabrication of OLEDs and investigate with luminescence and MOCON.

경사증착법을 이용한 PM-OLED용 무기박막형 보호층 연구 (Study on the MgO Passivated PM-OLED using the Tilt & Rotate Technique)

  • In this study, the MgO thin-film passivation layer was adopted to protect passive matrix organic light emitting diode(PMOLED) with the cathode separator from moisture and oxygen. Using the substrate rotate and tilt technique during the deposition, the organic and cathode layers were perfectly covered with MgO. And then, we analyzed the difference of the current-voltage and luminescence characteristics between passivated OLED of the MgO and non-passivated OLED. It was found that the number of dark spot generated from the degradated pixel was decreased owing to the Mgo thin-film passivation layer using the tilt & rotate technique. And the half-life time passivated OLED was improved two times more. Thus, the MgO could be vaccum-deposited under the low temperature and had a merit that the organic layer was not much affected. We can consider that MgO thin film passivation method can be adopted to protect the OLED from moisture and oxygen and can offer the enhancement of lifetime.

Characteristics of plasma polymerized para-xylene films as a passivation layer of organic light emitting diodes

  • For the longevity of OLEDs, passivation of OLEDs is an important process step since organic materials used in OLEDs are very vulnerable to moisture. In this work, the passivation effect of the plasma polymerized para-xylene (PP$\rho$X) layers was studied. The PPpX layers deposited by PECVD were formed on top of the cathode with various plasma powers of 50 - 90 W. Passivation effect of PP$\rho$X was significantly dependent upon the deposition plasma power of the PP$\rho$X film. The lifetime of OLEDs with the 70 W deposited PP$\rho$X passivation layer was about 5 times longer than that of the control device.

  • Passivation of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) using organic and metal thin-film was presented. Parylene-C and titanium were used as an organic and metal layer, respectively. With the proposed passivation method the degradation of electric parameters of OTFTs was relieved compared with non-passivated devices. Several electric parameters such as on/off current, field-effect mobility, and threshold voltage were shown.

페시베이션 박막이 녹색 유기발광다이오드의 광학특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Passivation Thin Films on the Optical Properties of the Green Organic Light Emitting Diodes)

  • 유기발광다이오드(orgianic light emitting diodes, OLEDs)는 대형 유연 디스플레이와 발광원으로서 사물인터넷 (IoT)의 하드웨어 기기 등 다양한 분야에서 연구가 진행되고 있다. 그러나 낮은 일함수의 금속 및 쉽게 반응하는 유기재료 자체의 특성으로 인하여 외부환경에 매우 취약한 단점을 가지고 있으며 특히, 수분과 산소에 민감하여 외부와의 접촉 시 성능이 급속도로 저하되는 현상을 나타내게 된다. 이를 방지하기 위해 PVD, CVD, ALD 와 같은 방법으로 보호막 형성 연구를 진행 중에 있지만 복잡한 공정 및 높은 비용의 문제점 등이 있다. 그러므로 외부 환경에 의한 성능 저하를 차단해주는 저렴하고 단순한 공정의 페시베이션(passivation) 박막 기술 개발이 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 유기발광다이오드의 수명 향상을 위하여 스핀코팅(spin-coating) 방법으로 녹색 유기발광다이오드 소자 위에 조성비에 따른 페시베이션 박막을 형성한 후 녹색 유기발광다이오드의 휘도특성 변화를 조사하였다. 페시베이션 용액은 poly vinyl alcohol (PVA)를 기반으로 sodium alginate (SA)를 0, 10, 20, 40 wt%의 조성비로 제조하였으며, 40 wt%의 조성비에서 가장 좋은 배리어 보호 특성을 나타내었다. 최종적으로 PVA + SA 용액의 최적화된 페시베이션 보호막을 제작할 수 있었다.

  • The chemical vapor condensation process of Parylene-N thin films was investigated and applied to the passivation of the organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The effects of process variables on the deposition rate were studied, and it was found that the deposition rate of Parylene increases with increasing precursor sublimation temperature but decreases with increasing substrate temperature. The Parylene film was used as a passivation layer for OLEDs, and as a result, the lifetime of the passivated OLEDs was increased by a factor of about 2.3 compared with that of non-passivated OLEDs.

  • We have developed the transparent passivation layer for transparent organic light-emitting devices (TOLEDs) using CsCl layer. The CsCl passivation layer improves the optical transmittance of Ca/Ag double layer which have used as a semitransparent cathode, resulting in substantial increase of the luminance by the enhanced light extraction out of the cathode surface of the TOLEDs.

  • We studied hybrid passivation using parylene-C, metal, photoacyl and indium zinc oxide for pentacene OTFT to assure stability in subthreshold region. After the passivation, the changes in S and $V_{on}$ of OTFT were negligible and $I_{off}$ maintained its initial value of ${\sim}10^{-12}$ A. Therefore, the hybrid passivation is suitable for practical applications based on OTFT.
