Biodegradable poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles were developed for sustained delivery of water-soluble macromolecules. PLGA nanoparticles were fabricated by spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method generating negatively charged particles and heterogeneous size distribution. As a model drug, blue dextran was encapsulated in PLGA nanoparticles. In addition, nanoparticles were also prepared with varying ratio of poloxamer 188 (P188) and poloxamer 407 (P407), and coating with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Then, the particle size, zeta potential and encapsulation efficiency of nanoparticles containing blue dextran were studied. In vitro release of blue dextran from nanoparticles was also investigated. The surface and morphology of nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In case of nanoparticles prepared with PLGA, P407, and different organic solvents, particle size was in the range of $230{\sim}320\;nm$ and zeta potentials of nanoparticles were negative. The SEM images showed that ethyl acetate is suitable for the formulation of PLGA nanoparticles with good appearance. Moreover, ethyl acetate showed higher encapsulation efficiency than other solvents. The addition of P188 to formulation did not affect the particle size of PLGA nanoparticles but altered the release patterns of blue dextran from nanoparticles. However, PVA, as a coating material, altered the particle size with increasing the PVA concentration. The nanoparticles were physically stable in the change of particle size during long-term storage. From the results, the PLGA nanoparticles prepared with various contents of poloxamers and PVA, could modulate the particles size of nanoparticles, in vitro release pattern, and encapsulation of water-soluble macromolecules.
Core-shell particles of inorganic/organic pair were synthesized from $CaCO_3$ absorbed sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) surfactant. Shell components were synthesized by sequential emulsion polymerization. Various monomers were used as shell components such as methyl methacrylate(MMA), ethyl acrylate(EA), butyl acrylate(BA), and styrene(St). Ammonium persulfate(APS) was used as an initiator and 2-ethylhexyl acylate(2-EHA) was used as a functional monomer, In the $CaCO_3$/organic core-shell particle polymerization, $CaCO_3$ absorbed surfactant SDBS of 0.5 wt% was prepared first and then core $CaCO_3$ was encapsulated by emulsion polymerization. 0.1 wt% of APS was added sequentially to minimize the formation of new monomer particle during shell polymerization. The structure of inorganic/organic core-shell particles were characterized by measuring the decomposition degree of $CaCO_3$ using HCl solution, thermogravimetric analyzer, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope.
Microspheres were prepared by solvent-evaporation method with Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) as a starting material, and the effects of preparation variables on microsphere shape and average particle size were investigated. As the concentration of PVA solution increased from 1 to 5 wt%, the average particle size decreased from $370{\mu}m$ to $160{\mu}m$ and then increased to $240{\mu}m$ at 7 wt%. On the other hand, As the addition volume of PVA solution increased from 10 mL to 50 mL, the average particle size decreased from $370{\mu}m$ to $220{\mu}m$. Also, as the stirring speed increased from 500 rpm to 1,500 rpm, the average particle size decreased from $370{\mu}m$ to $110{\mu}m$. When dichloromethane and chloroform were used as organic solvents, respectively, the average particle size did not show any significant difference. However, when dichloromethane was used, voids were observed on the particle surface, but when chloroform was used, smooth spherical particles were obtained.
Nanotechnology has penetrated into the various branches of research and development and it is particularly of benefit to the particle size engineering. It has been widely known that the particle size of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is critical in determining the bioavailability and processability of pharmaceutical formulation. However, the window of appropriate particle size has been limited mainly due to related processing difficulties. The windows have been widened by the recent development of nanotechnologies, resulting in diversified drug delivery systems. The impact of this development is far more fundamental than what can be expected from conventional particle size engineering. It is the case that the preparation and use of nanoparticles will soon be a common task in the particle engineering step of pharmaceutical unit operations. In this chapter, the basic principles of variouspreparation techniques will be discussed in detail. Regardless of processing details, the preparation methods of pharmaceutical nanoparticles mainly concern how to deal with the extra energy related with particle size. Depending on the ways of treating the e103 energy, preparation methods can be classified into two major classes, i.e.. thermodynamic and kinetic approaches. The recent progresses have shown the possibilities of much more complex combinations of different approaches and the use of new types of energy and nanostructures.

The characteristics of soot near the soot inception point for an ethene-air flame was carried out in a WSR (well-stirred reactor). The new sampling tool like the temperature controlled filter system was introduced to minimize the condensation during sampling. The new analysis tools applied include the real time size distribution analysis with the Nano-DMA, particle size by transmission electron microscopy, C/H analysis, g filter analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis using both non-oxidative and oxidative pyrolysis. The WSR can generate young soot particles that can be collected and examined to gain insight into inception. For the current conditions, soot does not form for ${\Phi}$=1.9, inception occurs at or before ${\Phi}$=2.0, and inception combined with soot surface growth and/or coagulation occurs for ${\Phi}$=2.1. The filter samples for ${\Phi}$=1.9 are composed of volatile compounds that evolve at relatively low temperatures when heated in the presence or absence of O$_2$. The samples collected from the WSR at ${\Phi}$=2.0 and ${\Phi}$=2.1 are precursor-like in morphology and size. They have higher C/H ratios and lower organic percentages than precursor particles, but they are clearly not fully carbonized soot. The WSR PAH distribution is similar to that in young soot from inverse flames.

Measurements of 24-hr size-segregated ambient particles were made at an urban site of Gwangju under high pressure conditions occurred in the Korean Peninsula late in March 2018. The aim of this study was to understand the effect of air stagnation on mass size distributions and formation pathways of water-soluble organic and inorganic components. During the study period, the $NO_3{^-}$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NH_4{^+}$, water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), and humic-like substances(HULIS) exhibited mostly bi-modal size distributions peaking at 1.0 and $6.2{\mu}m$, with predominant droplet modes. In particular, outstanding droplet mode size distributions were observed on March 25 when a severe haze occurred due to stable air conditions and long range transport of aerosol particles from northeastern regions of China. Air stagnation conditions and high relative humidity during the study period resulted in accumulation of primary aerosol particles from local emission sources and enhanced formation of secondary ionic and organic aerosols through aqueous-phase oxidations of $SO_2$, $NO_2$, $NH_3$, and volatile organic compounds, leading to their dominant droplet mode size distributions at particle size of $1.0{\mu}m$. From the size distribution of $K^+$ in accumulation mode, it can be inferred that in addition to the secondary organic aerosol formations, accumulation mode WSOC and HULIS could be partly attributed to biomass burning emissions.
Monthly variation of mutagenicity by airborne particulate were studied according to particle size of the particulate. Airborne particulates were collected in Shinchon of Seoul which is commocial and traffic area in 1986. And those were separately collected into two parts such as fine particle (less than $2.5{\mu}m$ aerodynamic diameter) and coarse particle (greater than $2.5{\mu}m$). Extractable organic matters(EOM) were extracted and mutagenicity of the EOM was tested in Salmonella thyphimurium TA 98 by Ames method. While the concentration of coarse particle did not show the seasonal variation, that of fine particle showed great seasonal variation. The contents and mutagenicity of EOM in fine particles were higher than those of coarse particles. So fine particles were expected to contribute to the 90% of mutagenicity in atmosphere by suspended particulates. The content of EOM and mutagenicity by suspended particulates in atmosphere were highest in January all the year around and also higher as much as 6 and 30 times than in July, respectively.
In this study the calcined condition and characteristic of Cu-Ni-Zn ferrite powder were investigated. The Cu-Ni-Zn ferrite powder has been synthesized by the thermal decomposition of the organic acid salt. This process did not require a strict pH control and provided the uniform composition and fine powder with about 0.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The XRD diffraction pattern of this powder showed about 50% spinel phase. The optimum calcination was found to be done at $700^{\circ}C$ for one hour. After the calcination, the amount of spinel increased to 90%. The distribution of the particle size showed bimodal peaks, one was about 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the other was about 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The large particles of 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were the agglomeration of fine Particles. The mean Particle size of the powder was about 0.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The powder was compacted under 100 MPa pressure and sintered at 1100~ $1250^{\circ}C$ for one hour in air. The density of ferrites specimen was a function of the sintering temperature. The higher the temperature, the denser the ferrite. The maximum relative density of the sintered ferrite was about 93% at $1250^{\circ}C$. The grain size of sintered specimen at $1200^{\circ}C$ was 5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and homogeneous.

Nanoporous $SiO_2$ particles containing different pore volume and size were prepared from silicic acid by a spray pyrolysis. The pore size, pore volume and particle size could be controlled with varying the precursor concentration, reaction temperature, and amount of organic templates such as Urea and poly ethylene glycol (PEG). The pore size distribution, pore volume and specific surface area of as-prepared particles were analyzed by BET and BJH methods, and the average particle sizes were measured by a laser diffraction method. The nanoporous $SiO_2$ particles ranged $0.6-0.9{\mu}m$ in diameter were successfully synthesized and the average particle size increased as the silicic acid concentration increased. The morphology of nanoporous $SiO_2$ particles was spherical and pores ranged 1 - 40 nm in diameter were measured in the particles. In case of Urea added into silicic acid, it showed no much difference in the morphology, pore size and pore volume at different Urea concentration. On the other hand, when PEG was added, it was clearly observed that pore diameter and pore volume of the particles surface increased with respect to PEG concentration.
