  • In this paper, we propose a new .mu.-controller design method using an equivalent weighting function $W_{\mu}$(s). The proposed mehtod is not guaranteed to converge to the minimum as D-K and .mu.-K iteration method. However, the robust performance problem can be converted into an equivalent $H^{\infty}$ optimization problem of unstructured uncertainty by using an equivalent weightng function $W_{\mu}$(s). Also we can find a .mu.-optimal controller iteratively using an error index $d_{\epsilon}$ of differnce between maximum singular value and .mu.-norm. And under the condition of the same order of scaling functions, the proposed method provides the .mu.-optimal controller with the degree less than that obtained by D-K iteration..

  • In this paper, we present a GA(Genetic Algorithm) approach to select weighting matrices of an optimal LQ(Linear Quadratic) controller for SVC(Static VAR Compensator). A SVC, one of the FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System), constructed by a FC(Fixed Capacitor) and a TCR(Thyristor Controlled Reactor), was designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as to control the system voltage Also, a design of LQ controller depends on choosing weighting matrices. The selection of weighting matrices which is not a trivial solution is usually carried out by trial and error. We proposed an efficient method using GA of finding weighting matrices for optimal control law. Thus, we proved the usefulness of proposed method to improve the stability of single machine-infinite bus with SVC system by eigenvalues analysis and simulation.

  • A method optimizing selection of a state weighting matrix is presented. The state weight-ing matrix is chosen so that the closed-loop system responses closely match to the ideal model responses. An algorithm is presented which determines a positive semidefinite state weighting matrix in the linear quadratic optimal control design problem and an numerical example is given to show the effect of the present algorithm.

  • This study suggests a method to determine optimal seismic retrofitting schemes for existing bridges based on weighting-factored evaluation. According to the recognition for potential seismic risk, various kinds of retrofitting methods are applied to improve the seismic performance of existing bridges. However, the relevant technique is not available to select optimal retrofitting scheme for bridges now. This suggested method weights five factors, structural compatibility, economic efficacy, environmental factor, consturctability and maintenance, and draws out optimal seismic retrofitting schemes. The application of the developed method to one hundred sixty existing bridges verifies the adaptability of this method. As a result, this study provides an idealized retrofitting schemes, and the suggested method could be a guideline to determine the more cost-effective and optimal retrofitting schemes for existing bridges in Korea.

  • This paper presents a new control approach for designing a coordinated controller for static VAR compensator system. A SVC constructed by a Fixed Capacitor and a Thyristor Controlled Reactor is designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. A design of linear quadratic controller based on optimal controller depends on choosing weighting matrices. A coordinated optimal controller is achieved by minimizing a quadratic performance index using dynamic programming techniques. • Multiple attribute for decision making including user preference will increase the complexity of route selection process. Various approaches have been proposed to solve the optimal route selection problem. In this paper, multi attribute decision making (MADM) algorithms such as Simple Additive Weighting (SAW), Weighted Product Method (WPM), Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method and Total Order Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methods have been proposed for acoustic signature based optimal route selection to facilitate user with better quality of service. The traffic density state conditions (very low, low, below medium, medium, above medium, high and very high) on the road segment is the occurrence and mixture weightings of traffic noise signals (Tyre, Engine, Air Turbulence, Exhaust, and Honks etc) is considered as one of the attribute in decision making process. The short-term spectral envelope features of the cumulative acoustic signals are extracted using Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Classifier (ANFC) is used to model seven traffic density states. Simple point method and AHP has been used for calculation of weights of decision parameters. Numerical results show that WPM, AHP and TOPSIS provide similar performance.

  • This paper presents an optimal and robust PI-PD controller design method for the second-order systems both with dead time and without dead time to satisfy the design specifications in the time domain via LQR design technique. The optimal tuning method of PI-PD controller are also developed by setpoint weighting and neural networks. It is shown that the simulation results show significantly improved performance by proposed method.

  • The design optimization of the plate heat exchanger with staggered pin arrays for a fixed volume is performed numerically. The flow and thermal fields are assumed to be a streamwise-periodic flow and heat transfer with constant wall temperature and they are solved by using the finite volume method. The optimization is carried out by using the sequential linear programming (SLP) method and the weighting method is used for solving the multi-objective problem. The results show that the optimal design variables for the weighting coefficient of 0.5 are as follows; S=6.497mm, P=5.496mm, $D_1=0.689mm$, and $D_2=2.396mm$. The Pareto optimal solutions are also presented.

  • An optimal control approach to robust control design is proposed in this study for rigid robotic systems under the unknown load and the other uncertainties. The uncertainties are quadratically bounded for some positive definite matrix. Iterative method to find the matrix is shown. Simulations arc made for a weight-lifting operation of a two-link manipulator and the robust control performance of robotic systems by the proposed algorithm is remarkable.
