  • When one opens the door of a microwave oven during its operation, twisting deformation of the door occurs, which may cause leakage of microwave through the gap between the door and the front plate. A numerical optimization is implemented to minimize the gap by maximizing twisting stiffness of the door of the oven. Design variables are deformed, which describe the shape of the bead in the horizontal and vertical flanges of the door frame. To minimize the twisting deformation, Two optimal design problems to find shapes of the bead in the flange are established. The problems are solved by a numerical optimization technique, their results being evaluated.

  • At an early design stage of rail track, dynamic analyses using a standard vehicle model of ADAMS/Rail are employed. In the real field, it is very difficult to find an optimal solution on the designing of rail track considering future operating vehicles because the construction of rail track should be done in the advance of vehicle selection and operation. Using a standard vehicle model of ADAMS/Rail, however the better selection among designed rail tracks is possible by comparing the dynamic analysis.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an optimal operation model for the sewage treatment plants using nonlinear programming (NLP) technique and the QUAL2E model. The model finds the minimum-cost operation of sewage treatment plants while satisfying all design constraints and water quality (BOD) standard. The model is applied to four sewage treatment plants in Han River for the city of Seoul. It has been found that optimal operation schedule for the sewage treatment plants can be computed and it is more economic to operate the plants according to the schedule which satisfies the water quality constraints in the river. In addition, the water quality in the river can be predicted using the model under the treatment policy.

  • A robust optimal control design is proposed in this study for rigid robotic systems under the unknown load and the other uncertainties. The uncertainties are quadratically bounded for some positive definite matrix. Iterative method finding the Q weighting matrix is shown. Computer simulations have been done for a weight-lifting operation of a two-link manipulator and the result of the simulation shows that the proposed algorithm is very effective for a robust control of robotic systems.

  • This study addresses the optimal design methodology for switching between active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar operating modes to easily select the necessary information to reduce pilots' cognitive load and physical workload in situations where diverse and complex information is continuously provided. This study presents a procedure for defining a hidden Markov chain model (HMM) for modeling operating mode changes based on time series data on the operating modes of the AESA radar used by pilots while performing mission scenarios with inherent uncertainty. Furthermore, based on a transition probability matrix (TPM) of the HMM, this study presents a mathematical programming model for proposing the optimal structural design of AESA radar operating modes considering the manipulation method of a hands on throttle-and-stick (HOTAS). Fighter pilots select and activate the menu key for an AESA radar operation mode by manipulating the HOTAS's rotary and toggle controllers. Therefore, this study presents an optimization problem to propose the optimal structural design of the menu keys so that the pilot can easily change the menu keys to suit the operational environment.

  • This paper deals with an automated computer-aided process planning and die design system by which designer can determine operation sequences even if they have a little experience in process planning and die design for axisymmetric products. An attempt is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM softwares, DEFORM and ANSYS, to form a useful package. The system can provide a flexible process based on either the reduction in the number of forming sequences by combining the possible two processes in sequence, or the reduction of deviation of the distribution on the level of the required forming loads by controlling the forming ratios. Especially in die design module optimal design technique and horizontal split of die insert were investigated for determining appropriate dimensions of components of multi-former die set. Results obtained, using the modules, enable the design and manufacture of a die set for a multi-former to be more efficiently performed.

  • To minimize the leakage of microwave which can occur when one pulls the door of a microwave oven during its operation, shape optimization of the door frame is presented. A numerical optimization is implemented to minimize the dynamic twisting deformation of the door frame. Shape design variables are defined, which represent the dimension of the bead in the flange. Two optimal design problems are established to minimize the maximum twisting deformation from harmonic response analysis. The problems are solved, their results being compared and evaluated.
