  • This paper addresses a robust controller design technique for a nonlinear underwater glider with disturbances. We consider the buoyancy and pitching moment as control inputs, which generate additional nonlinearity on the plant dynamics. To deal with the nonlinearity, we utilize the optimal linearization technique. The conditions for the optimal linearization and the controller design are formulated in terms of matrix inequalities. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through a simulation.

  • This paper shows the form of the optimal solution and how to minimize energy of train driving control. In this paper we consider the case where a train is to be driven by manual operation mode along a straight level track, and with speed limits. Using the constrained optimal technique(Lagrange Function & Kuhn-Tucker equations), we constructed optimal train driving strategy.

  • This paper presents an AP placement technique considering indoor location-awareness and examines its performance. The proposed AP placement technique is addressed from three performance metrics: location-awareness and AP-based wireless network performance as well as its cost. The proposed AP placement technique consists of meta-heuristic algorithms that yield a near optimal AP configuration for given performance metrics, and deterministic algorithms that improve the fast convergence of the near optimal AP configuration. The performance of the AP placement technique presented in this paper is measured under the environments simulating indoor space, and numerical results obtained by experimental evaluation yield the fast convergence of a near-optimal solution to a given performance metric.

  • This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift and evaluate the structural behavior characteristics and efficiency for tall outrigger system subject to lateral loads. To this end, displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of outrigger system is established and approximation concept that preserves the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Specifically, under the 'constant-shape' assumption, resizing technique of member is developed. Four types of 50 story frameworks are presented to illustrate the features of the quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

  • In this paper, it is shown that the dominant errors of baro-altimeters can be characterized by bias and scale factor errors. Also an optimal filter for estimating both bias and scale factor is derived based on the concept of model transition. The optimal filter is, however, not realizable because the model transition hypotheses increase exponentially. Therefore a realizable suboptimal filter using the interacting multiple model(IMM) technique is proposed. Computer simulation results show that the estimation errors of the proposed filter are smaller than those of the conventional least squares algorithm with a forgetting factor when both the bias and the scale factor are varying.

  • We introduce a design technique for homogeneous magnets using evolution strategy. The method has several advantages over existing techniques including: it allows complete flexibility in geometric constraints on the shape of both the coil and the homogeneous volume; it guarantees a globally optimal solution, and it automatically searches the minimum number of coils that satisfies given constraints.

  • This paper presents the optimization technique for design of a CMAC network by using an evolution strategies(ES). The proposed technique is designed to find the optimal parameters of a CMAC network, which can minimize the learning error between the desired output and the CMAC network's as well as the number of memory used in the CMAC network. Computer simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

  • The present research aimed at development of a computer code for the optimal design of ventilation system based on one-dimensional analysis of the air flow. Model experiment and three-dimensional flow analysis have been implemented to determine loss coefficients that were needed for the optimization technique. A research on optimum shape of ventilation shaft has been also carried out through the three-dimensional analysis of the flow.

  • This paper presents an efficient method for real power loss minimization and for improvements in voltage profiles. This method is accomplished by optimal control of reactive power in the system. The problem is formulated as an optimization problem, suitable for solution by linear programming technique. After establishing the objective function for minimizing the system losses with the help of linearised sensitivity relationships of control variables, i. e., the transformer tap position, generator terminal voltages and switchable reactive power sources. The linear programming technique is used to determine the optimal adjustments to the above variables, simultaneously satisfying the constraints. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a sample system and the result is presented and discussed.

  • In the design of AGVS (Automated Guided Vehicle Systems), one of the important problem is to determine the number of AGVs required to provide a given level of transport service. At present, there are two kind of methods to determine the number of AGVs, the one is to use the mathematical model, the other is to use the simulation technique. Among these, simulation based technique is more reliable than analytical method. In this sense, this paper intend to determine the optimal number of AGVs using personal computer simulation by SIMAN Ver.3.5.
