  • We developed a novel fabrication method of polydimethylsioxane (PDMS) lens, which can easily control the shapes of the lens using soft lithography with common photolithography and water droplet molding. A mold for PDMS lens was prepared by patterning of hydrophobic photoresist on the hydrophilic substrate and dispensing small water droplets onto the predefined hydrophilic patterns. The size of patterns determined the dimension of the lens and the dispensed volume of the water droplet decided the radius of curvature of the PDMS lens independently. The water droplet with photoresist pattern played a robustly fixed mold for lens due to difference in wettability. The radius of curvature could be calculated theoretically because the water droplets could approximate spherical cap on the substrate. Finally, concave and convex PDMS lenses which could reduce or magnify optically were fabricated by curing of PDMS on the prepared mold. The measured radii of the fabricated PDMS lenses were well matched with the estimated values. We believe that our simple and efficient fabrication method can be adopted to PDMS microlens and extended to micro optical device, lab on a chip, and sensor technology.

  • A musical sheet is read by optical music recognition (OMR) systems that automatically recognize and reconstruct the read data to convert them into a machine-readable format such as XML so that the music can be played. This process, however, is very challenging due to the large variety of musical styles, symbol notation, and other distortions. In this paper, we present a model for the recognition of musical symbols through the use of a mobile application, whereby a camera is used to capture the input image; therefore, additional difficulties arise due to variations of the illumination and distortions. For our proposed model, we first generate a line adjacency graph (LAG) to remove the staff lines and to perform primitive detection. After symbol segmentation using the primitive information, we use a covariance-matching method to estimate the similarity between every symbol and pre-defined templates. This method generates the three hypotheses with the highest scores for likelihood measurement. We also add a global consistency (time measurements) to verify the three hypotheses in accordance with the structure of the musical sheets; one of the three hypotheses is chosen through a final decision. The results of the experiment show that our proposed method leads to promising results.

  • Efficiency of crystalline Si solar cell can be maximized as minimizing optical loss through antireflection texturing with inverted pyramids. Even if cost-competitive, soft lithography can be employed instead of photolithography for the purpose, some limitations still remain to apply the soft lithography directly to as-received solar grade wafer with a bunch of micro trenches on surface. Therefore, it is needed to develop a low-cost, effective planarization process and evaluate its output to be applicable to patterning process with PDMS stamp. In this study new surface planarization process is proposed and the change of micro scale trenches on the surface as a function of etching time is observed. Also, the effect of trenches on pattern quality by soft lithography is investigated using FEM structural analysis. In conclusion it is clear that the geometry and shape of trenches would be basic considerations for soft lithography application to low quality wafer.

  • 3-D visualization using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in a chaotic micromixer was performed as a reproduction experiment and the feasibility of 3-0 imaging technique in the microscale was confirmed. For diagonal micromixer (DM) and two types of staggered herringbone micromixers (SHM) designed by Whitesides et al., to verify the evolution of mixing, cross sectional images are reconstructed at the end of every cycle. In a DM, clockwise rotational flow motion generated by diagonal ridges placed on the floor of micromixer is observed and this motion makes the fluid commingle. On the contrary, there are two rotational flow structures in the SHM and the centers of rotation exchange their position each other every half cycle because of the V shape of ridges varying their orientation every half cycle. Local rotational flow and local extensional flow generated by the complicate ridge pattern make the flow be chaotic and accelerate the mixing of fluid. The dominant parameter that influences on the mixing characteristic of SHM is not the length of micromixer but the number of ridges under the same flow configurations.

  • Recently, the mechanical structures applied to many industrial products, especially in electronic products, appear to be miniaturized and complicated. This trend makes it difficult to analyze the stress distribution of those mechanical structures and generates new challenges for precise measurement of strain. In order to solve this measurement problem many optical measurement techniques have been suggested. Among those, the ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) has been considered as one of the most useful tools. But the shortage of recognition and difficulties of measurement have limited its industrial applications in spite of its excellent capabilities. Therefore in this study, not only the verification of the FEA result but the enhancement of industrial application of ESPI was tried by measuring the in-plane displacement of mechanical structure with ESPI, which is difficult to be measured with strain gauge.

  • In this paper, we present a wearable intelligent device based on multi-sensor for monitoring human activity. In order to recognize multiple activities, we developed activity recognition algorithms utilizing an image sensor and a 3-axis accelerometer sensor. We proposed a grid?based optical flow method and used a SVM classifier to analyze data acquired from multi-sensor. We used the direction and the magnitude of motion vectors extracted from the image sensor. We computed the correlation between axes and the magnitude of the FFT with data extracted from the 3-axis accelerometer sensor. In the experimental results, we showed that the accuracy of activity recognition based on the only image sensor, the only 3-axis accelerometer sensor, and the proposed multi-sensor method was 55.57%, 89.97%, and 89.97% respectively.

  • When confocal lenses are applied to a digital holography system, the interference pattern of a larger object size can be recorded on CCD. The angle of incoming light to the CCD can be reduced by the ratio of the two focal lengths of confocal lenses. The recordable spatial frequency is limited by the unit cell size of the CCD. Therefore the spatial frequency of interference on the CCD is lowered by reduction of the incoming light angle. By using confocal lenses , another merit can be achieved that the area of the zero order diffraction is reduced by the square of the ratio of two focal lengths at the numerical reconstruction.

  • The phase-shifting diffraction-grating interferometer proposed in the investigation uses a diffraction grating that performs manifold functions of beam splitting, beam recombination, and phase shifting. The reference and measurement waves generated by means of diffraction have different amplitudes depending on their orders of diffraction, so the interference fringe pattern resulting from the two waves tends to yield poor visibility. To cope with this problem, we select a phase grating of reflection type and attempt to improve the interference visibility with optimization of the groove shape of the grating through electromagnetic analysis.

  • Privacy films are typically manufactured by combining black resin and transparent louver-shaped patterns. The use of black resin results in excellent light-shielding. However, black resin can reduce the transmittance of privacy films at the front viewing angle. In this study, we applied $SiO_2/SiON$ multi-layer thin films on a privacy film to maintain transmittance at the front viewing angle and improve light-shielding at the side viewing angle. We determined the optimum combination of thicknesses of the $SiO_2/SiON$ multi-layer stacks to increase the overall transmittance; the light shielding could be maximized at the side viewing angle.

  • Films with special properties (e.g., water-repellent films, optical films, anti-reflection films, and flexible films) are referred to as functional films. Recently, there has been interest in fine patterning methods for film fabrication. In particular there have been many studies that use a UV nanoimprint process involving a UV curing method. In this paper, a polymer film was fabricated by the UV nanoimprint process with a micro-pattern, and its durability was evaluated by a wear test and a nano-indentation test. The film mechanical properties (such as coefficient of friction, hardness, and modulus of elasticity) were measured. Moreover, the choice of PUA type resin used in the UV nanoimprint process was confirmed to impact the durability of the thin film. Despite making the polymer film samples using the same method and PUA type resin, different coefficient of friction, hardness, and modulus of elasticity values were obtained. PUA 4 resin had the most favorable coefficient of friction, hardness, and modulus of elasticity. This material is predicted to produce a high durability functional film.
