Recently, composite materials are widely used for nozzle, pressure vessel, skins of satellite and many structures under condition of high temperature due to good thermal characteristics such as low CTE, heat-resistance, etc. Fiber optic sensors, especially FBG(fiber Bragg grating) sensors, can be a good counterproposal of strain gages for the measurement of material properties of composites under high temperature. In this research, T700/Epoxy specimens with embedded FBG sensors were fabricated and tested at the Instron with thermal chamber from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$. The effects of embedding optical fiber on material properties were also verified. And, the experimental results were discussed and analyzed by microphotographs of the composite specimen.

In this paper, a novel optical measuring system for the measurement of nonuniform electric field was proposed. The electric field distorted by the discharges was detected through proposed optical measuring system based on the Pockets effect and Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In order to produce distorted electric field, corona discharge was generated from needle-plane electrode in air and detected by optical measuring system. This optical measuring system is constructed by He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, $2{\times}2$ 50/50 beam splitter, $LiNbO_3$ Pockets cell, photo detector and PC. In this system, output signal of Pockels sensor is measured by digital oscilloscope and transferred to the PC for recording and statistical processing. Through this paper, a promising possibilities of proto-type optical measuring system were evinced.
We have developed a measurement method of the refractive index profile of an optical fiber by using diffraction phase microscopy. In the microscope system, the reference light was extracted directly from the probe light that passed through the sample by means of pinhole filtering with a diffraction grating. The spatial interference pattern produced by the probe light and the reference light was processed to generate the phase image of the sample fiber. The index profile was obtained by the inverse Abel transform of the phase profile. In order to remove the background phase that originated from the index difference between the cladding and the surrounding medium, the background phase was calculated from the phase data of the cladding to make a core phase profile that can be directly transformed to the index profile of the core without the full phase image that includes the entire cladding part.

In this work, we used PWM sampling for demodulation of a fiber-optic interferometric current transformer. The interference signal from a fiber-optic CT is sampled with PWM triggers that produce a 90-degree phase difference between two consecutively sampled signals. The current-induced phase is extracted by applying an arctangent demodulation and a phase unwrapping algorithm to the sampled signals. From experiments using the proposed demodulation, we obtained phase measurement accuracy and a linearity error, in AC current measurements, of ~2.35 mrad and 0.18%, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed method was compared with that of a lock-in amplifier demodulation, which showed only 0.36% difference. To compare the birefringence effects of different fiber-optic sensor coils, a flint glass fiber and a standard single-mode fiber were used under the same conditions. The flint glass fiber coil with a Faraday rotator mirror showed the best performance. Because of the simple hardware structure and signal processing, the proposed demodulation would be suitable for low-cost over-current monitoring in high voltage power systems.
A simple method for a time delay measurement of a chirped fiber grating by using bidirectional modulation of a Mach-Zehnder modulator has been proposed. The bidirectionally modulated light with time difference makes an interference fringe in the RF domain. The time delay of a chirped fiber grating can be obtained by measuring the period of the RF interference fringe for different wavelengths. We have measured the time delay of a chirped fiber grating with a chirped length of 5 cm and a bandwidth of 3.16 nm. The average slope of the time delay has been measured to be 183 ps/nm and its uncertainty has been less than $\pm$1.7%.
The photocatalytic degradation of TCE using solar energy in POFR was studied. The use of solar energy was investigated in plastic optica fiber photocatalytic reactor (POFR). In POFR, the main parameters of photocatalytic degradation of TCE were lihgt intensity, thickness of $TiO_2$-coated film on plastic fiber core, the same of total $TiO_2$-coated surface area with changed length. We studied the apparent photonic efficiency and photocatalytic degradation rate of TCE in POFR. The apparent photonic efficiency of various light intensities was decreased by an incresed intensities. The photocatalytic activities of $TiO_2$-coated optical fiber reactor system depended on the coating thickness, and total clad-stripped surface area of POF. Photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene ($C_2HCl_3$, TCE) in the gas-phase was elucidated by using $TiO_2$-coated plastic optical fiber reactor. In TCE degradation, in-situ FTIR measurement resulted in mineralization into $CO_2$.
It is reported that the spectral loss of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) having a large hole-to-hole distance (~ 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) is sensitive to micro- and macrobending when compared with the conventional single-mode fiber. In this paper, we will present the measurement result of the macro- and microbending characteristics of fabricated PCF with large hole-to-hole distance (> 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) . For the macrobending experiment, the fiber was simply wound around a circular structure with variable diameter that could be reduced to a few centimeters. For the microbending case, regularly spaced silica rods were attached on a slide glass and pressed against the fiber by loading a stack of metal plates of known weight on the glass. The transmission loss spectrum shows a rather flat response to the to microbending, and this makes the PCF a good candidate for a wideband variable optical attenuator.

In this study, an optical-fiber sensor was used to measure loads that could act in an environment similar to the loading conditions that exist in an actual pipe. The structure and the installation method of the optical-fiber strain sensor were applied considering the actual large pipe and the buried pipe environment. Load tests were performed using a displacement sensor and sandbags to determine the deflection of the pipe according to the external load, and the linear measurement results were verified. Considering the conditions that could exist in the actual pipe, the test method was presented, and the strain of the buried pipe generated at this time was measured.

Detection of cracks in concrete beams using optical fiber sensors is useful for monitoring of concrete structures. In this study, optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is used to detect cracks. Resolution of OTDR is the main contributor to detect cracks in concrete structures. The OTDR used in this study can detect cracks with high precision of 0.5 m. Two mortar beams, reinforced with a 19 mm diameter steel bar, are made with the dimensions of 140 mm (width) ${\times}$ 200 mm (depth) ${\times}$ 2.000 mm (length). Two fibers are embedded inside each beam and two fibers are attached under the beams. The application of measurement system which consists of fiber and FC/PC connecter is studied. For this, theory of optics, resolution, crack moment, and size of specimens are investigated. From the measured data, it is verified that fibers which are attached under the beam can detect the crack in beams effectively. However, fibers embedded inside the beam are unable to detect cracks in beams using the OTDR in this study.
