  • Traffic states in urban areas are essential to implement effective traffic operation and traffic control. However, installing traffic sensors on numerous road sections is extremely expensive. Accordingly, estimating the traffic state using a vehicle-mounted camera, which shows a high penetration rate, is a more effective solution. However, the previously proposed methodology using object tracking or optical flow has a high computational cost and requires consecutive frames to obtain traffic states. Accordingly, we propose a method to detect vehicles and lanes by object detection networks and set the region between lanes as a region of interest to estimate the traffic density of the corresponding area. The proposed method only uses less computationally expensive object detection models and can estimate traffic states from sampled frames rather than consecutive frames. In addition, the traffic density estimation accuracy was over 90% on the black box videos collected from two buses having different characteristics.

  • Agricultural reservoirs are an important water resource nationwide and vulnerable to abnormal climate effects such as drought caused by climate change. Therefore, it is required enhanced management for appropriate operation. Although water-level tracking is necessary through continuous monitoring, it is challenging to measure and observe on-site due to practical problems. This study presents an objective comparison between multiple AI models for water-body extraction using radar images that have the advantages of wide coverage, and frequent revisit time. The proposed methods in this study used Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, and unlike common methods of water extraction based on optical images, they are suitable for long-term monitoring because they are less affected by the weather conditions. We built four AI models such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) using drone images, sentinel-1 SAR and DSM data. There are total of 22 reservoirs of less than 1 million tons for the study, including small and medium-sized reservoirs with an effective storage capacity of less than 300,000 tons. 45 images from 22 reservoirs were used for model training and verification, and the results show that the AutoML model was 0.01 to 0.03 better in the water Intersection over Union (IoU) than the other three models, with Accuracy=0.92 and mIoU=0.81 in a test. As the result, AutoML performed as well as the classical machine learning methods and it is expected that the applicability of the water-body extraction technique by AutoML to monitor reservoirs automatically.

  • Continuous space development increases the occurrence probability of space hazards such as collapse of a satellite and collision between a satellite and space debris. In Korea, a space surveillance network with optical system has been developed; however, the radar technology for an independent space surveillance needs to be secured. Herein, an L-band phased array radar system for the detection and tracking of space objects is proposed to provide a number of services including collision avoidance and the prediction of re-entry events. With the mission analysis of space surveillance and the case analysis of foreign advanced radar systems, the radar parameters are defined and designed. The proposed radar system is able to detect a debris having a diameter of 10 cm at a maximum distance of 1,576 km. In addition, we confirmed the possibility of using the space surveillance mission for domestic satellites through the analysis of the detection area.

  • A fiber optic sensor is prospective to be applied to structural health monitoring. Especially, a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor is one of the most popular sensors for the structural health monitoring. The FBG sensor has several demodulation systems for tracking the shift of the Bragg wavelength. The dynamic bandwidth is dependent on the demodulation system. In this paper, the sensing mechanism is that the slope of the optical spectrum of FBG could be used as its sensitivity when the tunable laser shot the monochromatic laser wavelength at the highest slope point. In this technique, the high sensitivity is guaranteed even though the sensing range is limited. In an example of the application, the composite plate embedding a FBG sensor was manufactured by using an autoclave method and the above sensing mechanism was applied to the composite plate. Firstly, the natural frequencies of the plate were successfully measured by the FBG sensor during the impact hammer test. Secondly, a high-power speaker was used to force the plate to be vibrated at the specific frequency that was one of the natural frequencies. During the shaking, the FBG sensor measures the dynamic characteristics and ESPI was also used to measure the mode shape. From the two dynamic tests, the availability of the FBG sensor system and the ESPI was proven as a technique for measuring the dynamic characteristics of composite structure.

  • Climate change and drought stress are having profound impacts on crop growth and development by altering crop physiological processes including photosynthetic activity. But finding a rapid, efficient, and non-destructive method for estimating environmental stress responses in the leaf and canopy is still a difficult issue for remote sensing research. We compared the relationships between photochemical reflectance index(PRI) and various optical and experimental indices on soybean drought stress under climate change conditions. Canopy photosynthesis trait, biomass change, chlorophyll fluorescence(Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance showed significant correlations with midday PRI value across the drought stress period under various climate conditions. In high temperature treatment, PRI were more sensitive to enhanced drought stress, demonstrating the negative effect of the high temperature on the drought stress. But high CO2 concentration alleviated the midday depression of both photosynthesis and PRI. Although air temperature and CO2 concentration could affect PRI interpretation and assessment of canopy radiation use efficiency(RUE), PRI was significantly correlated with canopy RUE both under climate change and drought stress conditions, indicating the applicability of PRI for tracking the drought stress responses in soybean. However, it is necessary to develop an integrated model for stress diagnosis using PRI at canopy level by minimizing the influence of physical and physiological factors on PRI and incorporating the effects of other vegetation indices.

  • We discuss a modified numerical model based on the Monte Carlo radiative transfer (MCRT) method, i.e., the MCRT matrix method, for the analysis of atmospheric scattering effects in three-dimensional flash LIDAR systems. Based on the MCRT method, the radiative transfer function for a LIDAR signal is constructed in a form of a matrix, which corresponds to the characteristic response. Exploiting the superposition and convolution of the characteristic response matrices under the paraxial approximation, an extended computer simulation model of an overall flash LIDAR system is developed. The MCRT matrix method substantially reduces the number of tracking signals, which may grow excessively in the case of conventional Monte Carlo methods. Consequently, it can readily yield fast acquisition of the signal response under various scattering conditions and LIDAR-system configurations. Using the computational model based on the MCRT matrix method, we carry out numerical simulations of a three-dimensional flash LIDAR system operating under different atmospheric conditions, varying the scattering coefficient in terms of visible distance. We numerically analyze various phenomena caused by scattering effects in this system, such as degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio, glitches, and spatiotemporal spread and time delay of the LIDAR signals. The MCRT matrix method is expected to be very effective in analyzing a variety of LIDAR systems, including flash LIDAR systems for autonomous driving.

  • In this paper, the HILS (Hardware In-the-Loop Simulation) system to analyze and to verify the performance of the targeting pod is addressed. The main functions of the targeting pod is acquiring and tracking targets to guide a LGB (Laser Guided Bomb) to the targets. For the analysis of targeting pod, the real time simulate images generation of IR and daylight cameras, sever control technology, and the analysis of laser transfer characteristics are necessary. For the real time image generation and the laser transfer characteristics analysis, off-the-shelf SDK(Software Development Kit) OKTAL-SE is used. For the servo controller, well-proven mechanism in the previous program is applied to increase servo control accuracy. To analyze the performance of a targeting pod in a realistic environment, 1553B, ARINK818 interface and etc. which are actually implemented in real combat aircrafts are applied in the system. By using the developed HILS system, the performance of currently operating targeting pods in real combat aircrafts can be analyzed and predicted. Additionally, the relationship between overall system performance and each module performance can be analyzed, the currently developed HILS system is expected to be a very useful tool to generate system development requirements of targeting pods and to reduce any possible future development risks.

  • A various technology of remote sensing and image analysis are applied to study landscape changes and their influencing factors in stream corridors. We developed a method to detect landscape changes over time by calculating the optical index using multispectral images taken from satellites at various time points, calculating the threshold to delineate the boundaries of water bodies, and creating binarized maps into land and water areas. This method was applied to the upstream reach of the weirs in the Geumgang River to track changes in the sandbar formed by the opening of the weir gate. First, we collected multispectral images with a resolution of 10 m × 10 m taken from the Sentinel-2 satellite at various times before and after the opening of the dam in the Geumgang River. The normalized difference water index (NDWI) was calculated using the green light and near-infrared bands from the collected images. The Otsu's threshold of NDWI calculated to delineate the boundary of the water body ranged from -0.0573 to 0.1367. The boundary of the water area determined by remote sensing matched the boundary in the actual image. A map binarized into water and land areas was created using NDWI and the Otsu's threshold. According to these results of the developed method, it was estimated that a total of 379.7 ha of new sandbar was formed by opening the three weir floodgates from 2017 to 2021 in the longitudinal range from Baekje Weir to Daecheong Dam on the Geumgang River. The landscape detection method developed in this study is evaluated as a useful method that can obtain objective results with few resources over a wide spatial and temporal range.

  • With the increasing use of drone technology, the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is now being utilized in various fields. However, this increased use of drones has resulted in various issues. Due to its small size, the drone is difficult to detect with radar or optical equipment, so acoustical tracking methods have been recently applied. In this paper, a method of localization of multiple drones using the acoustic characteristics of the quadcopter drone is suggested. Because the acoustic characteristics induced by each rotor are differentiated depending on the type of drone and its movement state, the sound source of the drone can be reconstructed by spatially clustering the results of the estimated positions of the blade passing frequency and its harmonic sound source. The reconstructed sound sources are utilized to finally determine the location of multiple-drone sound sources by applying the source localization algorithm. An experiment is conducted to analyze the acoustic characteristics of the test quadcopter drones, and the simulations for three different types of drones are conducted to localize the multiple drones based on the measured acoustic signals. The test result shows that the location of multiple drones can be estimated by utilizing the acoustic characteristics of the drone. Also, one can see that the clarity of the separated drone sound source and the source localization algorithm affect the accuracy of the localization for multiple-drone sound sources.

  • We studied optical behavior of scintillation light generated in NaI(TI) crystal using Monte Carlo simulation method. The simulation was performed for the model of NaI(TI) scintillator (size: 60 mm ${\times}$ 60 mm ${\times}$ 6 mm) using an optical tracking code. The sensitivity as a function of surface treatment (Ground, Polished, Metal-0.95RC, Polished-0.98RC, Painted- 0.98RC) of the incident surface of the scintillator was compared. The effects of NaI(TI) scintillator thickness and the refractive index of light guide optically coupling between the NaI(TI) scintillator and photomultiplier tube (PMT) were simulated. We also evaluated intrinsic position resolution of the system by calculating the spread of scintillation light generated. The sensitivities of the system having the surface treatment of Ground, Polished, Metal-0.95RC, Polished-0.98RC and Painted-0.98RC were 70.9%, 73.9%, 78.6%, 80.1% and 85.2%, respectively, and the surface treatment of Painted-0.98RC allowed the highest sensitivity. As increasing the thickness of scintillation crystal and light guide, the sensitivity of the system was decreased. As the refractive index of light guide increases, the sensitivity was increased. The intrinsic position resolution of the system was estimated to be 1.2 mm in horizontal and vertical directions. In this study, the performance of NaI(TI)-PMT detector system was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Based on the results, we concluded that the NaI(TI)-PMT detector array is a favorable configuration for small gamma camera imaging breast tumor using Tc-99m labeled radiopharmaceuticals.
