  • Transmission spectra are measured from waveguide-coupled ring resonators fabricated with SiNx on SiO2. By using ring resonators with various radii and several index contrasts, the behavior of the quality factors is investigated. As the index contrast decreases, the dominant loss is from scattering for a large resonator, while that changes from scattering loss to bending loss for a small resonator. We verify that the quality factor can be drastically improved by reducing the index contrast in large ring resonators.

  • We describe a method for the detection of nanometer scale displacements of nanoelectromechanical resonators. We also present an analysis of the mechanical motion of these devices. We evaluate the effectiveness of the detection technique by detecting displacements from a series of nanomechanical doubly clamped beam resonators with decreasing dimensions.

  • In this paper, we report the fabrication of concave surface fiber tips for optical resonators. It was confirmed that the radius of curvature on fiber end can be controlled by introducing the hydrofluoric acid solution and the wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ laser which is absorbed well in the etchant to induce the photothermal effect. Using the microscope images, we observed the proposed concave fiber tip fabrication method is effective to make the controllable concave tips. We also observed changes in the size of the beam emitted from the tips with the various radius of curvature using the beam profiler. The authors believe that the proposed method will be applied to resonators for optical communications.

  • We design and fabricate a widely tunable laser diode made of InGaAsP-InP. The diode is monolithically integrated with a wavelength-selective coupled-ring reflector and semiconductor amplifiers. For realization of a compact size device, deeply etched multi-mode interference couplers and square ring resonators composed of total-internal-reflection mirrors are adopted and fabricated using a self-aligned process. It is demonstrated that the laser diode exhibits single mode operation and 16 nm tuning range with side-mode-suppression-ratio exceeding 20 dB.

  • The method of characteristic matrix used in the calculation of multi-layered optical coating is applied to the analysis of DFB waveguide with arbitrary structure of grating by plecewise approximation where the DFB structure is devided into many sections in which the gain and period, amplitude and phase of DFB structure are assuced to be constant in each section. The DFB structure with two section is analyzed using this method of C-matrix. The possible applications for photonic devices using DFB waveguides are proposed.

  • Low-threshold optical bistability is essential for practical nonlinear optical applications. Many bistable optical devices based on high-quality-factor resonators have been proposed to reduce the threshold intensity. However, demonstrating high-quality-factor resonance requires complex fabrication techniques. In this work, we numerically demonstrate optical bistability with bound states in the continuum in a simple one-dimensional Si photonic crystal. The designed structure supports bound states in the continuum, producing an ultrahigh quality factor without tough fabrication conditions. The threshold intensity of the designed device is 150 MW/cm2 at the optical communication wavelength. This scheme may lead to a new class of nonlinear photonics.

  • The evanescent wave coupling of a microring resonator is controlled by changing the gap distance between the bus waveguide and the microring waveguide. However, the interdependence of the bus waveguide's width and the coupling is not well understood. In this paper, we investigate the dependence of coupling strength on the bus waveguide's width. The strength of the evanescent wave coupling is analytically calculated using coupled-mode theory (CMT) and numerically calculated by three-dimensional finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The analytic and numerical simulation results show that the phase-matching condition in evanescent wave coupling does not provide maximum coupling strength, because both phase-matching and mode confinement influence the coupling. The analytic and simulation results for the evanescent coupling correspond to the experimental results. The optimized bus-waveguide width that provides maximum coupling strength results in intrinsic quality factors of up to 1.3 × 106. This study provides reliable guidance for the design of microring resonators, depending on various applications.

  • To analyze the saturating process of $Cr^{4+}:YAG$ crystal and plastic organic dye as the saturable absorber, we have measured the residual optical losses between a free running and a passive Q-switching mode for various optical densities. The undepleted ground state population density and the saturated transmission of the saturable absorber have been evaluated by the additional optical losses with the increased threshold pump energies between two resonators. ill the passive Q-switching mode, the saturable transmission of saturable absorber is less than the maxrnium saturable transmission due to the undepleted ground state population density. nsity.

  • We are studying the application of an adaptive optics system to upgrade the beam quality of a laser. The adaptive optics (AO) system consists of a bimorph deformable mirror, a Shack-Hartmann sensor and a control system. In most AO applications, the beam aperture is considered to be circular. However, in some cases such as laser beams from unstable resonators, the beam apertures are annulus or a holed-rectangle. In this paper, we investigate how well a bimorph deformable mirror of ${\Phi}120\;mm$ clear aperture can compensate phase distortions for three different beam configurations; 1) ${\Phi}120\;mm$ circular aperture, 2) ${\Phi}100\;mm$ annulus aperture with a ${\Phi}20\;mm$ hole and 3) $70\;mm{\times}70\;mm$ square aperture with a hole of $30\;mm{\times}30\;mm$. This study concludes that the bimorph mirror, which might be considered as a modal controller, can compensate tilt, defocus, coma and astigmatism, and spherical aberration for all three beams.
