Development of the Video Optical Network Unit for Dual Band Broadcasting Services (이중 대역 방송 서비스가 가능한 비디오 광수신기(ONU: Optical Network Unit)의 개발)

  • As an astonishing progress of FTTH infrastructure, the new technologies have been widely studied to use the tantalizing benefits of high bandwidth in fiber optic cable. In this paper, a new VONU is presented to perform all necessary optical functions. It can converts digital and analog CATV signals and satellite-based signal transmitted via one fiber optic cable to electrical signals (electric lights). However, most previous VONU systems have the problems such as interference between difference services, signal distortion, and noise increasing rate. These problems cause the quality deterioration in broadcasting. Therefore, we suggest the new VONU system to solve all problems listed above. In addition, we show that how our system performs well by measuring the real data with implemented system.

An Experimental Study on the Comparison of Operating Temperatures in Thermal Detector due to Tunnel Fire (터널 화재 시 열감지기 작동 온도의 비교에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Due to the rapid development of construction technology with effective land utilization in this nation, many tunnels were and are being built across the country. However, the smoke and the heat generated from tunnel fire are the most important critical factors which may results in both massive personal injury and property damage, especially, due to the closed surrounding of the tunnel. Considering this particular nature of the tunnels, this study aims to install a fire detection system using an optic fiber cable to measure the temperature changes, compare, and analyze the resulted values with the times of temperature changes of the sensor by performing fire simulations under the same condition as a real fire test. From the results, it has been found that the temperature sensor detects a fire occurrence and generates an alarm within one minute after ignition for both a real fire test and a fire simulation alike, and also that the characteristics of temperature changes of the sensor has close relations with the speeds of the currents inside the tunnel. In addition, considering the tunnel fires can affect the evacuation efficiency and the fire extinguishing activities of the fire brigade inside the tunnel, the temperature sensor must be able to search and find the locations and directions of the fires correctly.

  • A faulting could be occurred at the end of deck by unexpected loads to bridge bearing after a bridge completion. Serviceability of bridges could be impaired by the faulting which is caused structural damage. Therefore, smart bridge bearing which can continuously observe the supporting points is needed. Some of bridge bearings have been developed for measuring vertical load and vertical displacement by installing sensors in the bearing. In those systems, however it is not easy to be replaced with new sensors when repairs are needed. In this study, the smart bridge bearing of which sensors can be replaced has been developed to overcome such a problem. In this study, strain signals were used for measuring both of vertical displacements and loads. FBG sensors(fiber optic Bragg-grating sensors) have been used for measurement of the strain signals since it is prevented from electronic noise by mediating light, enables the simplification of the measuring cable by multiple measurement, and is easy to place by lightweight and small size. The possibility of use was reviewed for smart bridge bearing based on FBG sensors through tests.

  • This study describes a novel method for detecting and measuring partial discharge (PD) on an electrical facility such as an insulated power cable or switchgear using fiber optic sensing technology, and a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system. This method has distinct advantages over traditional PD sensing techniques based on an electrical method, including immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), long range detection, simultaneous detection for multiple points, and exact location. In this study, we present a DAS system for PD detection with performance evaluation and experimental results in a simulated environment. The results show that the system can be applied to PD detection.

  • 지중송전라인에서 전압등급의 상승은 선로손실을 줄이면서 밀집된 전력수요에 대응하거나 특별히 고전압 수요를 맞추기 위한 것으로 이것은 XLPE Cable의 제조기술이 향상되면서 지속적으로 진행되어온 초고압송전계통의 일반적 추세이다. 이러한 경향으로 국내에서는 지중송전선로로서 최고전압인 345kV가 시공되어 운전중에 있으며 해외에서는 220kV~275kV급을 넘어서 400kV급 초고압케이블라인의 수요가 증가하고 있는데, 이러한 지중송전라인의 초고압화는 높은 신뢰성이 함께 요구되며 특히 접속재 분야에서 매우 높은 신뢰성이 요구된다. 당사는 UAE 400kV AL TAWEELAH Project에 400kV XLPE 1Cx630SQ 광복합 초고압송전라인을 준공하였는데 본고에서는 여기에 적용된 400kV XLPE 1Cx630SQ 광복합 케이블 부속재의 신뢰성을 높이기 위한 설계방법, 시험 및 시공에 대하여 요약하였다.

  • Nowadays Fiber optical communication systems have limitless bandwidth and can be used for transmitting various multimedia data with in real time. It is necessary to construct integrated service systems that can be used in our society whole to communicate multimedia data such as text, image, audio and video data in fiber optic communication systems. In this paper, we have designed and constructed the fiber optical link application system for multi-video/audio data transmission using only one core optical cable upgrading previous fiber optical communication systems based on WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexer). Using the proposed fiber optical link application system enables us to managing fiber optical communication systems with only one core optical cable using WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexer) and DEWDM/Wavelength splitter.

  • Compared with other transport means, safety and timeliness are the merits of railways. Unexpectedly when accident happens, much time and human strength are required to cope with the accident. And for swift recovery, systematic rehabilitation is needed. Recently using MTS(Moving picture Transmission System), we can perform accident rehabilitation and recording work efficiently. MTS is the device that transmits continuous picture information from accident field to control center. We are developing the appropriate system to railway situation to make use of the existing information communication technology, processing technology of video-tex, super high speed transmission technology through fiber-optic, copper cable and network description of information Technology, etc. If these communication-based can technologies are applied to railway system, railway managers can control the accident by inspecting the picture of accident field and can contribute to the safe train operation and the improvement of railway management. In this paper, we investigate the connecting methods when optical fiber is used for moving picture data transmission of train accidents, and its problems. And, we validate MTS's performance through about 28km section of field test.

Application of Nano-TDR Health Monitoring System in Civil Engineering (나노-TDR센서를 이용한 토목구조물 모니터링 시스템)

  • This study presents reasonable relationships to estimate the deformation based on beam mechanism analysis and TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) data. To declar the length points of co-axial cable installed in civil structure, Nano material ($BaTiO_3$ powders and silver mixture) is used on co-axial cables. From the laboratory test, nano material could make the correct information about attached cable points on beam, and TDR sensor system and Fourier series (data filter) found out the deformation of beam. Therefore it is concluded that the correct deformed information of beam were acquired by Nano-TDR and Fourier filter, they are much more effective to apply at health monitoring system in civil structure compared to conventional TDR or Fiber Optic Sensor (FOS) systems.

The Analysis of Reducing Power Consumption and CO2 Emission in the Advanced Mobile Communication Base Station (다중 대역용 차세대 이동통신 기지국 시스템의 전력 및 탄소배출량 절감효과 분석)

  • In this paper, we present the analysis of the characteristics of advanced mobile communication base station with multi-band about power loss, power efficiency and carbon reduction considering cable power loss. The advanced mobile base station system is installed on the outdoor for Antenna and RF part, and then the power loss is reduced because the fiber optic cable is used between RF part and baseband part. If the cable power loss is reduced by 5 dB replacing an entire the advanced base station systems, annual power consumption is reduced total 49,038 MWh in the CDMA 20W, WCDMA 30W, WiBro 10W systems. Furthermore the advanced base station system of annual $CO_2$ emission is 20,832 $tCO_2$ compare to 65,878 $tCO_2$. Therefore the advanced base system is confirmed considering green IT technology for the advanced mobile communication base station.

  • This study aims to analyze the accuracy of rover speed change in route surveying using RTK-GPS. Route surveying methods using GPS contain Static, DGPS, and RTK-GPS. Much research of navigation system, positioning of vehicles by DGPS, and accuracy analysis by GPS surveying have already been done. From this study, it is firstly found that DGPS is suitable for car navigation and sea navigation with an error of meter scale but not good for detailed construction, designing maps and updating GIS databases. Secondly, RTK-GPS can be used for managing gas pipes, water supply and drain pipes and fiber-optic cable that are needed to be controlled in a real time basis. Thirdly, since the accuracies of route surveying by RTK-GPS and DGPS are not correctly matched with the change of rover speed, the choice of route surveying method from those two should follow the need of accuracy fidelity Further study should focus on Cycle Slip problem and coordinate change problem in tunnel and mountainous areas.
