  • Automotive pulleys play a key role in driving the cooling pump, oil pump, air-conditioner and so on by using an engine power. Researches on design processes and technologies of the pulleys can be found in many literatures. On the other hand, the areas related to manufacturing processes of the pulleys have been treated negligently. Vast data extracted from various information systems are transformed, integrated, and summarized to become a special database for helping users make a decision. The database, namely the data warehouse has been popularly used in the marketing and customer management of enterprises and recently applied to improve the design and manufacturing processes. In this study the manufacturing process of pulleys were analyzed through the intensive investigation of shop-floors and the interviews with workers and managers. The defects generated during a manufacturing process were categorized in a few types and the causes of defects examined for extracting the dominant parameters in the setup process for producing pulleys. As the first step to construct the data warehouse for the manufacturing processes of pulleys, authors proposed its architecture focused on the reduction of defect rate during the setup process.

  • This study presented a method to allocate RFID reader sites for the weekly no driving day program. In resent years, three metropolitan cities begin to operate the system to resolve the traffic jam, air pollution, and oil cost, which is expected to be operated across the country in a few years. In this regard, the accurate verification of the observance of the cars which are participated in the system is needed so that the more benefits are rewarded to observing participants but not violating ones. Thus, this study distinguished road sections where the system of the Daegu metropolitan city cannot determine the observance of the participated cars when the cars detour the RFID readers by employing a set of data from the traffic census, digital maps, and terrestrial photographs of the superstructures on the roads. Then, the appropriate sites for additional RFID readers were determined based on those sections in the road network and the types of the road superstructures.

  • The positive matrix factorization (PMF2) and multilinear engine (ME2) models have been shown to be powerful environmental analysis techniques and have been successfully applied to the assessment of ambient particulate matter (PM) source contributions. Because these models are difficult to apply practically, the US EPA developed a more user-friendly version of the PMF. The initial version of the EPA PMF model does not provide any rotational capabilities; for this reason, the model was upgraded to include rotational functions in the EPA PMF ver. 2.0. In this study, PMF and EPA PMF modeling identified ten particulate matter sources including secondary sulfate I, vehicle gasoline, secondary sulfate II, secondary nitrate, secondary sulfate III, incinerators, aged sea salt, airborne soil particles, oil combustion, and diesel emissions. All of the source profiles determined by the two models showed excellent agreement. The calculated average concentrations of $PM_{2.5}$ were consistent between the PMF2 and EPA PMF ($17.94{\pm}0.30{\mu}g/m^3$ and $17.94{\pm}0.30\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively). Also, each set of estimated source contributions of the PMF2 and EPA PMF showed good agreement. The results from the new EPA PMF version applying rotational functions were consistent with those of PMF2. Therefore, the updated version of EPA PMF with rotational capabilities will provide more reasonable solutions compared with those of PMF2 and can be more widely applied to air quality management.

  • An increase in oil and gas plants caused by development of process industry have brought into the increase in use of flammable and toxic materials in the complex process under high temperature and pressure. There is always possibility of fire and explosion of dangerous chemicals, which exist as raw materials, intermediates, and finished goods whether used or stored in the industrial plants. Since there is the need of efforts on disaster damage reduction or mitigation process, we have been conducting a research to relate explosion model on the background of real 3D terrain model. By predicting the extent of damage caused by recent disasters, we will be able to improve efficiency of recovery and, sure, to take preventive measure and emergency counterplan in response to unprepared disaster. For disaster damage prediction, it is general to conduct quantitative risk assessment, using engineering model for environmentaldescription of the target area. There are different engineering models, according to type of disaster, to be used for industry disaster such as UVCE (Unconfined Vapor Cloud Explosion), BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Evaporation Vapor Explosion), Fireball and so on, among them.we estimate explosion damage through UVCE model which is used in the event of explosion of high frequency and severe damage. When flammable gas in a tank is released to the air, firing it brings about explosion, then we can assess the effect of explosion. As 3D terrain information data is utilized to predict and estimate the extent of damage for each human and material. 3D terrain data with synthetic environment (SEDRIS) gives us more accurate damage prediction for industrial disaster and this research will show appropriate prediction results.

  • This study was conduct to compare the efficacy to produce male and female somatic cloned piglets. Maturation of porcine COCs was accomplished by incubation in NCSU-23 medium supplemented with 0.6 mM cysteine, 10% porcine follicular fluid, 1mM dibutyryl cyclic adenosine monophosphate (dbc-AMP, Sigma, USA), and 0.1 IU/ml human menopausal gonadotrophin (hMG, Teikokuzoki, Japan) for 20h and then cultured without dbcAMP and hMG for another 18 to 24 h. Female and male fetal cells were isolated from each fetus, cultured in ES-DMEM medium containing 10% FCS. Enucleated oocytes were fused with fetal fibroblasts (passage 4 to 15). Reconstructed embryos were cultured in NCSU-23 with 4 mg/ml BSA under mineral oil at 39$^{\circ}C$ in 5% $CO_2$ in air. A total of 12,328 nuclear-transferred embryos (1- to 4-cell stage) were surgically transferred into 69 surrogate gilts. Three recipients aborted during the period of conception. Three gilts delivered eleven female piglets, and five recipients gave rise to birth 22 male piglets. The average birth weigh of the cloned piglets was 1.52 kg (1.38~1.83 kg) in female piglets and 0.84 kg (0.45~1.25 kg) in male piglets. Alive cloned pigs was seven in female piglets (63.6%) and four in male piglets (18.2%). The other two recipients is ongoing. This study suggests that female-derived fetal cell as a nuclear donor has more capability on production of cloned piglets than male.

  • Volatile organic compounds(VOCs) are regarded as a harmful cause substance not only causing air pollutions but also causing global warming phenomenon. For this reason, VOCs are managed politically to reduce emissions by each country. In particular, the vapor from the gas station contains VOCs which is harmful to the human body such as carcinogens benzene and pollute the atmosphere, the Ministry of Environment defined every gas station must install vapor recovery equipment to recover volatile organic compounds. Recently, there are many accidents caused by existing vapor treatment methods, the liquefaction recovery technology is getting the spotlight to cool the vapor at the field. However, because the liquefaction recovery technology have risks of fire or explosion in accordance with temperature, the real time monitoring is critical factor. In this paper, we implement an Android-based monitoring application for liquified vapor recovery device which attached sensor module for temperature and power to monitoring real time information.

  • The mathematical modelling of screw compressor processes and its implementation in their design began about 30 years ago with the publication of several pioneering papers on this topic, mainly at Purdue Compressor Conferences. This led to the gradual introduction of computer aided design, which, in turn, resulted in huge improvements in these machines, especially in oil-flooded air compressors, where the market is very competitive. A review of progress in such methods is presented in this paper together with their application in successful compressor designs. As a result of their introduction, even small details are now considered significant in efforts to improve performance and reduce costs. Despite this, there are still possibilities to introduce new methods and procedures for improved rotor profiles, design optimisation for each specified duty and specialized compressor design, all of which can lead to a better product and new areas of application. A review of methods and procedures which lead to modern screw compressor practice is presented in this paper. This paper is intended to give a cross section through activities being done in mathematical modelling of screw compressor process through last five decades. It is expected to serve as a basis for further contributions in the area and as a challenge to the forthcoming generations of scientists and engineers to concentrate their efforts in finding future and more extended approaches and submit their contributions.

  • Candida tropicalis, an osmophilic strain isolated from honeycomb, produced xylitol at a maximal volumetric production rate of 3.5 g $l^{-1}$ $h^{-1}$ from an initial xylose concentration of 200 g $l^{-1}$. Even with a very high xylose concentration, e.g., 350 g $l^{-1}$, this strain produced xylitol at a moderate rate of 2.07 g $l^{-1}$ $h^{-1}$. In a fed-batch fermentation of xylose and glucose, 260 g $l^{-1}$ of xylose was added, and xylitol production was 234 g $l^{-1}$ for 48 h, corresponding to a rate of 4.88 g $l^{-1}$ $h^{-1}$. To increase the xylitol production rate, cells were recycled in a submerged membrane bioreactor with suction pressure and air sparging. In cell-recycle fermentation, the average concentration of xylitol produced per recycle round, total fermentation time, volumetric production rate, and product yield for ten rounds were 180 g $l^{-1}$, 195 h, 8.5 g $l^{-1}$ $h^{-1}$, and 85%, respectively. When cell-recycle fermentation was started with the cell mass contratrated two-fold after batch fermentation and was performed for ten recycle rounds, we achieved a very high production rate of 12 g $l^{-1}$ $h^{-1}$. The production rate and total amount of xylitol produced in cell-recycle fermentation were 3.4 and 11 times higher than in batch fermentation, respectively.

  • Flow pattern of air-water two phase flow depends on the conditions of pressure drop, void fraction, and channel geometry. Drag reduction in the two phase flow can be applied to the transport of crude oil, phase change systems such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to present cavitation which occurs in pump impellers. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction produced and void fraction by Co-polymer(A611p) addition in the two phase flow system. We find that the maximum point position of local void friction moves from the wall of the pipe to the center of the pipe when polymer concentration increases. Also we find that the polymer solution changes the characteristics of the two phase flow. And then we predict that it is closely related with the drag reduction.
