Variation of Underwater Ambient Noise Observed at IORS Station as a Pilot Study

  • The Ieodo Ocean Research Station(IORS) is an integrated meteorological and oceanographic observation base which was constructed on the Ieodo underwater rock located at a distance of about 150 km to the south-west of the Mara-do, the southernmost island in Korea. The underwater ambient noise level observed at the IORS was similar to the results of the shallow water surrounding the Korean Peninsula (Choi et al. 2003) and was higher than that of deep ocean (Wenz 1962). The wind dependence of ambient noise was dominant at frequencies of a few kHz. The surface current dependence of ambient noise showed good correlation with the ambient noise in the frequency of 10 kHz. Especially, the shrimp sound was estimated through investigations of waveform and spectrum and its main acoustic energy was about 40 dB larger than ambient noise level at 5 kHz.

Phytoplankton in the Waters of the Ieodo Ocean Research Station Determined by Microscopy, Flow Cytometry, HPLC Pigment Data and Remote Sensing (현미경, Flow Cytometer, HPLC 색소자료 및 원격탐사를 이용한 이어도 관측기지 주변수의 식물플랑크톤 연구)

  • Phytoplankton community structure and distribution pattern in the surface water around the Ieodo Ocean Research Station were investigated during seven cruises carried out from July, 2003 to October, 2004. Samples were analyzed using various tools including a microscope, flow cytometer, and HPLC. Satellite images were used to analyze spatio-temporal phytoplankton biomass distribution. SeaWiFS chlorophyll a (chl a) images showed that spring blooms occurred in April-May near the Ieodo Station, and these waters were under the influence of Changjiang Dilute Water during July-October. Also, during the July-October period, HPLC pigments data showed increasing zeaxanthin concentrations, a marker pigment of cyanobacteria whereas increasing concentrations of various other pigments such as fucoxanthin, peridinin, prasinoxanthia alloxanthin, 19'-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin and chlorophyll b were noted during spring blooms. Such pigment marker data were consistent with picoplankton data analyzed by flow cytometer and nano-microplankton analyzed by microscope. The pigment-CHEMTAX method was used to drive the phytoplankton group apportioned chi a. Diatoms, chlorophytes, dinoflagellates, and cryptophytes comprised 25.8, 20.7, 15.9, and 14.1%, respectively, of the total chl a in May. Average cyanobacteria concentrations in July-October contributed 25.4% of the total concentration. This was the highest percent contribution and was followed by chlorophytes, diatoms, and prymnesiophytes. This study discusses results from various methods, similarities and differences in the results among those methods, and the application range of the results from different analytical methods. Also, the study reveals a detailed phytolpankton community structure in the waters around the Ieodo Station, and suggests future monitoring considerations in relation to cell morphology, ecology and diversity factors according to taxonomic groups.

  • The DGPS reference station is a national infrastructure generating GPS correctional information and transmitting the signal for Differential GPS. Currently, Korea has applied and operated the software-based DGPS reference station as a standard of the next generation proposed by the USCG in order to improve the hardware-based DGPS reference system. However, software-based DGPS reference station proposed by USCG was changed in software method, only for form. There is no advantage to changing software-based because the most critical part of architecture has not been improved. In this paper, we have designed a new software-based marine DGPS station architecture that a reference station software and a monitor station were integrated. The new marine DGPS station architecture based on software is a more simplified structure than it used to be and can be utilized in the DGPS reference station.

A Study on the Planning of Evacuation Facilities in an Underwater Research Station (수중연구기지의 피난시설계획에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to develop evacuation facilities for use during disasters such as fires and floods at an Underwater Research Station, which houses several researchers for extended periods. Initially, the residential space characteristics and the disaster and evacuation features of the Underwater Research Station are identified through a case study of similar underwater facilities. Subsequently, evacuation scenarios in the event of a disaster are formulated based on the spatial layout of the Underwater Research Station, and the requisite evacuation facilities are determined in accordance with the evacuation routes. Furthermore, by reviewing the standards for evacuation facilities of buildings, submarines, and underwater habitats, we establish suitable standards for the evacuation facilities of the Underwater Research Station and apply these standards in planning the evacuation facilities.

  • Now, on the developing COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) has solar panel on the South panel only. Therefore, the wheel off-loading has to be performed periodically to reduce a induced momentum energy by a asymmetric solar panel. One of two East/West station keeping maneuver to correct simultaneously longitude and eccentricity, orbit corrections may be performed during one of the two wheel off-loading manoeuvres per day to get enough observation time for meteorological and ocean sensor. In this paper, we applied a linearized orbit maneuver equation to acquire maneuver time and delta-V. Nonlinear simulation for the station keeping is performed and compared with general station keeping strategy for fuel reduction.

  • Korea ocean research stations manage the weather and environmental data collected from coastal and ocean areas to provide short-term and long-term ocean forecasts. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and quantify economic benefits of the ocean research stations with sensors to observe physical, chemical, and biological data. The construction and operation of an integrated ocean observation station is expected to reduce uncertainty about ocean and coastal areas and to improve the quality of ocean forecasts. The economic benefits are mainly come from improved search and rescue operations, ocean pollution management, yellow dust management, and improved productivity in ocean-related industries. In addition, an input-output analysis is performed to evaluate the economic impacts of ocean research stations nationwide. The analysis shows that the system can contribute to industries such as fishing, maritime and air cargo, medical and health care.

New Record of Neoclinus chihiroe (Perciformes: Chaenopsidae) from Dokdo, East Sea, Korea (한국 동해 독도에서 채집된 비늘베도라치과(Chaenopsidae) 어류 첫기록종, Neoclinus chihiroe)

  • A single specimen (52.5 mm SL) of Neoclinus chihiroe, belonging to the family Chaenopsidae, was firstly collected from Dokdo, East Sea of Korea on 9 December 2020. This species was characterized by a black spot between the first and the second dorsal spines, and a black spot on upper part of opercular membrane. The species was morphologically similar to N. okazakii, but distinctly distinguished by pectoral fin base without a black dot. This study documents the first record of N. chihiroe in Korean waters and suggests the new Korean name 'Dong-hae-bi-neul-be-do-la-chi' for the species.

The Species of Penguins and Penguins Occurring in the Vicinity of King Sejong Station (남극 세종기지 부근에 출현하는 펭귄)

  • Penguins are one of the key constituent organisms in the Antarctic ecosystem. A total of 18 species of penguins occur only in the southern hemisphere from the Galapagos Archipelago to southern area off Australia and New Zealand, South Africa, South America, and the islands scattered in the Southern Ocean to the coast along the Antarctic Continent. In the Antarctic Treaty area, there are only 5 species of penguins such as Emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri), Gentoo (Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi), Adelie (P. adeliae), Chinstrap (p. antarctica), and Macaroni (Eudyptes chrysolophus) penguins. Two additional species, the King (Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus) and Rockhopper (Eudyptes chrysocome) penguins, however, are distributed within the Antarctic Convergence. In the vicinity of king Sejong Station located in King George Island, the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula, 5 species are observed, among which 2 Pygoscelis species such as the Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins hatch their eggs and raise their chicks at the rookery 2km south offing Sejong Station in summer. Adelie penguins hatch their chicks in other place in King George Island. One Emperor penguin roamed on the frozen Maxwell Bay which has been frozen every two or three years with the approximate thickness of 60cm. And one Macaroni penguin also visited the rookery in summer. We should carry out researches on the penguins occurring in the vicinity of King Sejong Station to monitor the environmental changes around King Sejong Station and the South Shetland Islands.

  • In order to meet the international performance requirements for eLoran testbed operation, it is necessary to measure ASF (Additional Secondary Factor) of vessel's route as well as differential correction and the provision using differential Loran (dLoran) station operation. According to HEA (Harbor Entrance and Approach) performance of the IMO, the position accuracy should be within 10meters. Therefore this paper presents the possibility to meet the position accuracy of the IMO HEA through simulation results.

  • This paper deals with the development status of eLoran system which is the best backup position, navigation, and timing (P NT) system of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and its performance result. I t especially explains the status of eLoran testbed implementation for the eLoran test service, development of eLoran transmitting system, differential Loran (dLoran) system, integrated operation and control system (IOCS), and integrated eLoran/GNSS receiver. The paper discusses about the future plan for the build up test transmitting station and backup P NT service to succeed to the trial operation of eLoran testbed system.
