  • According to the Korea Information Society Development Institute, OTT services grew at a rate of 33.4% in four yearsfrom 2017, when they were first launched.TheKorea Export-Import Bank announced in 2020 that the domestic OTT market was worth 780.1 billionKRW. This growth of the OTT market is expected to stimulate competition among OTT service platforms, and user satisfactionwithconvenience features, such as video recommendations, seems to be acting as an important factor in the competition.Currently, the OTT market uses a variety ofdata for customized recommendations, but the limitationis that it only uses datacollected within the app. Thereby we have proposed the use ofpersonal data collected outside the app for personalized recommendations, and the survey results showed that user satisfaction was 23.72% higher for recommended content based on the proposedmethod thanNetflix recommended content.

An Analysis of the Impact of OTT Service Growth on Media Market Performance (OTT 서비스 성장이 방송산업의 시장성과에 미치는 영향)

  • As the OTT video service has grown, much attention has been paid to its impact on the traditional media market. This study explores how the OTT video service(measured as OTT subscription revenue, OTT advertising revenue, and Netflix effect) has impacts on the traditional media market(measured as pay TV subscription revenue, media advertising revenue, and broadcast advertising revenue), using the panel dataset with 50 countries from 2012 to 2020. For pay TV subscription revenue, OTT subscription revenue is positively associated with the revenue while Netflix and broadband diffusion have negative associations. For media advertising revenue, OTT advertising revenue is positively associated with the revenue while broadband diffusion has negative association. For broadcast advertising revenue, OTT advertising revenue is positively associated with the revenue while broadband diffusion has negative association.

An Analysis of the Impact of Digital Content Usage on Smart TV Usage (디지털 콘텐츠 이용이 스마트TV 이용에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • As digital content services, especially OTT(over-the-top) video services, diffuse rapidly, so do smartTVs. Based on the indirect network effect theory and the complementarity theory, this study explores the relationship between digital content services and smartTV. Using the Media panel dataset, this study analyzes how the usage of digital content service (OTT usage, OTT usage volume, the usage of various OTT service types, and online game/music/education/news service) affects smartTV usage. This study shows that OTT usage and its usage volume is positively associated with smartTV usage, and that the usage of various OTT service types is positively associated with smartTV usage compared with non-OTT users. As for online content services, the usage of online education service is positively associated with smartTV usage while the usage of online news service is associated negatively. These results support the indirect network effect theory and the complementarity theory.

Influence A Study on the Effects of Personalized Recommendation Service of OTT Service on the Relationship Strength and Customer Loyalty in Accordance with Type of Contents (콘텐츠 유형에 따라 OTT 서비스의 개인화추천서비스가 관계강화 및 고객충성도에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study is to suggest the measures for providing the personalized recommendation service, by analyzing the effects of personalized recommendation service of OTT service on the relationship strength and customer loyalty, and also to verify the differences in meanings of personalized recommendation service in accordance with the type of contents. In the results of this study, the personalized recommendation service has significant effects on the customer loyalty with the mediation of relationship strength, and in accordance with the type of contents mainly used by customers, there are differences in the effects of personalized recommendation service on the customers. Personalized recommendation service could be used as a tool for strengthening the relationship by inducing the commitment, which could improve the customer loyalty. When the contents have more active communications with customers, personalized recommendation service could largely contribute to the improvement of loyalty.

An Exploratory Analysis of OTT Usage Patterns (OTT 이용행태에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • Recently OTT video service has grown rapidly and has a negative impact on the growth of pay-TV subscribers. Consequently the substitution of OTT services for pay-TV services will begin. This study explores OTT usage patterns, dividing into three sectors (OTT service use, OTT usage volume, and paid-OTT service use), by considering users' demographice factors, smart device ownership, pay-TV subscription, and bundle service use, by employing the Mediapanel dataset. The results showed that age, income, smartTV usage, market size, cable/satellite subscribers, TV VOD expenses, movie VOD expenses, and mobile bundle use are associated with OTT service use. The results also showed that age, household sizes, tablePC usgage, cable/satellite subscribers, TV VOD expenses, other VOD expenses, and unlimited data plans are associated with OTT usage volume. Lastly the results showed that age, gender, income, tabletPC usage, cable subscribers, other VOD expenses, mobile bundle usage, and unlimited data plans are associated with paid-OTT service use.

A Study on the Factors Affecting Users' Willingness to Pay, Flow and Addiction for OTT Service: Focusing on China's OTT Service Platform iQIYI (OTT 이용자의 지불의도와 몰입, 중독에 이르는 영향요인 연구 - 중국 OTT 서비스 플랫폼 아이치이를 중심으로)

  • This study attempted to confirm the effect of the user's characteristics on perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, willingness to pay, flow and addiction to OTT service platform iQIYI users. Researchers believe that as the number of OTT service users who are willing to pay increases, research on the influencing factors and the cause of addiction is needed. As a result of the study, first, it was found that perceived usefulness affects willingness to pay, second, use intention and willingness to pay affect flow, and third, willingness to pay and flow affect addiction. This study considered that it has theoretical and practical value in that the route to flow and addiction of OTT service users was set and tested with intention to use and pay. Researchers hope that the study will expand in terms of willingness to pay and use experience of OTT services in the future.

Analysis of the use status of animation contents in Over The Top service (Over The Top 서비스의 애니메이션 콘텐츠 이용 현황 분석)

  • This study analyzed the factors that viewers consider when watching anime on Over The Top(OTT) service platforms and the characteristics of each type of preference, which are the components of anime preference. To this end, the survey data of 240 animation major students were used for analysis, and the conclusions drawn through frequency analysis and cross-tabulation of IBM SPSS Statistics 27 are as follows. Netflix is the OTT service platform that viewers use the most, and TV series are the most preferred for animation works. In addition, it was found that Netflix OTT original animation works were preferred over other platforms, and long-form animation preferred Disney+. Among the characteristics of each type of animation preference, it was found that the factors considered when watching animation in terms of narrative value, aesthetic value, and entertainment value respectively value the structure, screen production, and immersion of the storyline. It is hoped that this study will be used as useful data for producing animation contents with the OTT service platform.

A Comparative Analysis of OTT Service Reviews Before and After the Onset of the Pandemic Using Text Mining Technique: Focusing on the Emotion-Focused Coping and Nostalgia (텍스트 마이닝을 활용한 코로나 19 전후 온라인 동영상 서비스(OTT) 리뷰 비교분석 연구 - 정서 중심 대처와 노스탤지어를 중심으로)

  • This study aims to contribute to the understanding of consumer behavior during the COVID-19 by comparing blog reviews of an over-the-top (OTT) online video service from before and during the pandemic. We anticipate that the COVID-19 outbreak prompts the use of the OTT service as part of an emotion-focused coping strategy derived from the loss of personal control and the subsequent avoidance motivation. We also posit that a strong yearning for life before COVID-19 will increase interest in the content that fulfills a need for nostalgia. Our analysis of Netflix reviews provides empirical evidence of the effects of an emotion-focused coping strategy and nostalgia on OTT service usage. First, the titles of the reviews posted during COVID-19 indicate that consumers were less likely to mention OTT services other than Netflix, more interested in domestic content, and used OTT services as an avoidance-denial strategy. Second, the blog content demonstrates that while pre-COVID reviews tend to focus on the practical benefits of OTT services, those posted during the pandemic focus on mood, emotions, and dialogue. In addition, interest in comedy and romance genres increased during COVID-19. Third, we identified a greater preference for realistic or everyday content that depicted the pre-pandemic era. This is the first empirical study to investigate the effects of COVID-19 on video streaming usage in Korea. In addition, this research contributes to the field of marketing by expanding our understanding of online video service users during COVID-19 and identifies practical implications for OTT services in the midst of a pandemic.

An emprical analysis on the effect of OTT company's content investment (OTT 사업자 콘텐츠 투자가 미치는 영향에 대한 실증 분석)

  • OTT service, which allows video content to be viewed as a streaming service on the Internet network, has recently attracted a lot of attention, and the number of users is also increasing rapidly. It would be a natural strategy for OTT companies to acquire more content to gain a competitive advantage in relations with traditional media companies and other OTT companies. However, there are research results to show that the investment in facilities by Internet service providers who must transport the increasing Internet traffic from OTT provider to end users should increase as the amount of Internet traffic originated by OTT services also increases. This study empirically analyzed how content investment by Netflix, a leading OTT company, affects its revenue growth and network investment by Internet service providers through a polynomial distributed lag model. And the analysis results show that Netflix's content investment contributes to the company's increase in revenue, and also has an effect on the increase in network investment by Internet service providers. This result confirms that OTT operators' content acquisition strategy is a valid management strategy, and empirically supports the study results that OTT operators need to share the cost of Internet network facility investment.

The Effect of OTT Service Platform Characteristics on Psychological Benefits and OTT Brand Loyalty -Focusing on the Family Type- (OTT 서비스 플랫폼 특성이 심리적 혜택 및 OTT 브랜드 충성도에 미치는 영향 -가족의 형태 중심으로-)

  • In this study, we are going to study the OTT service platform, which is growing rapidly in recent years. Through this study, the characteristics of the platform preferred by consumers and the relationship between psychological benefits and loyalty were investigated. In addition, the relationship between the type of family and the characteristics of the platform and psychological benefits was investigated. In this study, a total of 255 surveys were conducted targeting consumers who have used OTT services, and 206 cases were analyzed with SPSS 18 and AMOS 21, excluding 49 cases that were insincere or inconsistent internally. According to the results of the study, all factors of convenience, AI recommendation service, and content, which are factors characteristic of OTT platform, had a significant effect on psychological benefits. In addition, psychological benefits were found to have a significant effect on brand loyalty. It was found that there was no difference between the characteristics of the OTT platform and the type of family according to the family type, which is a control variable. This study is significant in providing a theoretical background according to the type of family. Future studies are expected to consider various members or add factors to the study.
