  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the relationship between nursing students' hearing levels and accuracy of blood pressure (BP) measurements. Methods: Participants were 107 students who had finished their fundamental nursing practice and clinical practicum and who used earphones. Data were collected from October 13 to November 30, 2014 and from April 30 to May 19, 2015. Students' hearing thresholds were examined using an audiometer. Students were assigned to take two BP measurements on BP measurement training simulators, but only the second measurement was used for analysis. Results: All nursing students' hearing levels were within normal range, and there was no significant difference found among the settings for diastolic blood pressure. However, there were significant differences between low systolic blood pressure (SBP) (below 120mmHg) and high SBP (over 140mmHg) (z=9.02, p=.011). Measurement error in SBP showed a positive correlation with hearing threshold in the right ear at frequencies of 1000Hz and 500Hz. Conclusion: Findings indicate that BP measurement error is correlated with hearing threshold at some frequencies. To reduce measurement error, nursing students should be provided with health education about hearing and to improve training for students, further studies need to examine other factors influencing BP measurement error.

  • Nursing students who are in clinical practices under the complicated medical environment to become competent practitioners can be exposed to a variety of dangerous situations. In particular, nursing students can experience stress and compromised safety because they have difficulty in prioritizing their tasks and lack confidence in clinical and interpersonal skills. The purpose of this study is to investigate the types and characteristics of nursing students' attitudes toward the safety of clinical practices, and improve their safety related to clinical practices. A total of 40 statements about the safety of clinical practices were applied to 37 nursing students. Collected data were analyzed with the PC QUANL program. The Perception of nursing students to the safety of clinical practices was categorized into three types: 'Pursuit of perfection in overwhelming state type', 'Perseverance Patience type' and 'Cover up-meeting expectation type'. The subjects related to the safety of clinical practices need to be developed within the curriculum of nursing departments by examining the Perception of nursing students to the safety of clinical practices. In addition, a sense of responsibility shared by nursing students, educators and practitioners needs to be enhanced to improve the safety of clinical practices.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of exposure to blood and body fluid and factors affecting on blood and body fluid exposure of nursing students including knowledge, performance regarding standard precautions. Methods: 280 nursing students in D-city and S-city participated in this study. Data collection was conducted from January to March 2012. Students' knowledge and performance on standard precautions of infection control in hospitals were measured using the measurement developed by Hong(2010). Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one way-ANOVA, ${\chi}^2-test$, Pearson correlation coeficient, logistic regression by the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results: 58.6 percent of subjects experienced a exposure to blood and body fluid. The level of nursing students' knowledge level regarding standard precautions was $22.44{\pm}2.11$ and performance level was $4.31{\pm}0.50$. The factors affecting on blood and body fluid exposure of nursing students were knowledge level and education type about infection control. Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, to decrease the exposure to blood and body fluid of nursing students, a proper education need to be stressed to improve nursing students' infection control knowledge and awareness.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the impacts of alternative clinical practice on nursing professionalism in nursing students during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional study was used for this study. Data were collected from 178 junior and senior nursing students from December 28, 2022 to January 6, 2023. The nursing students' characteristics, nursing professionalism, clinical competence, extent of alternative clinical practice, and satisfaction with alternative clinical practice were self-reported through an on-line survey. Multiple linear regressions were conducted to examine the impacts of alternative clinical practice on nursing professionalism along with the confounding variables. Results: The nursing students reported that they performed alternative clinical practice for more than half of their clinical practice throughout 2022. The extent of alternative clinical practice (β=-.11, p=.028), satisfaction with content (β=.14, p=.045), and evaluation of the alternative clinical practice (β=.17, p=.007) were found to have impacted nursing professionalism. These variables explained 55.6% of the variance in nursing professionalism. Conclusion: The study results suggest that the alternative nursing practice could impact nursing students' professionalism. However, it would be possible to develop nursing professionalism if the students' satisfaction with the alternative clinical practice were increased. Nurse educators need to improve the content and evaluation methods of alternative clinical practice to promote nursing professionalism during the implementation of such alternative clinical practice.

  • The degree of mutual understanding between nursing students and instructors regarding simulation-based education remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to identify the subjectivity of nursing students and instructors about simulation-based learning, and was intended to expand the mutual understand by employing the co-orientation model. Q-methodology was used to identify the perspectives of 46 nursing students and 38 instructors. Perception types found among students in relation to simulation-based learning were developmental training seekers, instructor-dependent seekers, and learning achievement seekers. The instructors estimated the student perception types as passive and dependent, positive commitment, demanding role as facilitators, and psychological burden. Perception types found among instructors included nursing capacity enhancement seekers, self-reflection seekers, and reality seekers. The students classified the instructors' perception types as nursing competency seekers, learning reinforcement seekers, and debriefing-oriented seekers. As a result of the analysis of these relations in the co-orientation model, instructors identified psychological burden and passive and dependent cognitive frameworks among students; however, these were not reported in the students' perspectives. Likewise, the reality seekers type found among the perception types of instructors was not identified by the students. These findings can help develop and implement simulation-based curricula aimed at maximizing the learning effect of nursing students.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to characterize the influence of achievement motivation and the parent-child relationship on ego identity in Korean nursing students. Methods: The participants were 217 Korean nursing students in the first and fourth year of university. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires composed of items assessing ego identity, achievement motivation, the parent-child relationship, and demographic characteristics. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, the $x^2$ test, and multinomial logistic regression analysis. Results: Ego identity was related to achievement motivation; moreover, the achievement motivation of students with moratorium and achieved identity status was significantly higher than that of students with low-profile moratorium and diffused identity statuses. Ego identity was not related to the mother-child relationship, but the father-child relationship of students in foreclosure was significantly higher than that of students with diffused identity status. The factors influencing achieved identity compared to diffused identity were achievement motivation, year in school, satisfaction with school, and having religious beliefs. Conclusion: These findings indicate that nursing students' ego identity attainment was more influenced by achievement motivation than by the parent-child relationship. It emphasizes that highly motivated students can develop their own identities regardless of the parent-child relationship.

The 'Deliberateness-oriented' factor was characterized by preference of logical and objective ways in evaluation and trying to seek deep relationships with only a small number of people. The 'Positive-oriented' factor showed creative, autonomous and sociable traits and put value on extensive interpersonal relations. The 'Negative-oriented' factor focused on possibility and enjoyed artistic actions. All 3 factors were negative in NGO or political activities. Conclusion: Based on this result, curriculum development for nursing students should give students a variety of experiences. These findings will be the basic data for finding appropriate positions within the work place for nursing students and help them select appropriate careers for their own personality types.
