  • Numerical analysis is a powerful method in evaluating the soil-pile-structure interaction under the dynamic loading, and this approach has been applied to the practical area due to the development of computer technology. Finite Difference Method, one of the most popular numerical methods, is sensitive to the shape and the number of mesh. However, the trial and error approach is conducted to obtain the accurate results and the reasonable simulation time because of the lack of researches about mesh size and the number. In this study, FLAC 3D v3.1 program(FDM) is used to simulate the dynamic pile model tests, and the numerical results are compared with the 1G shaking table tests results. With the different size and shape of mesh, the responses of pile behavior and the simulation time are estimated, and the optimum mesh sizes in dynamic analysis of single pile is studied.

Efficiency of insulation layers in fire protection of FRP-confined RC columns-numerical study

  • This paper addresses the efficiency of thermal insulation layers applied to protect structural elements strengthened by fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) in the case of fire event. The paper presents numerical modeling and nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) columns externally strengthened by FRP and protected by thermal insulation layers when subjected to elevated temperature specified by standard fire tests, in order to predict their residual capacity and fire endurance. The adopted numerical approach uses commercial software includes heat transfer, variation of thermal and mechanical properties of concrete, steel reinforcement, FRP and insulation material with elevated temperature. The numerical results show good agreement with published results of full-scale fire tests. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the influence of several variables on the structural response and residual capacity of insulated FRP-confined columns loaded by service loads when exposed to fire. The residual capacity of FRP-confined RC column was affected by concrete grade and insulation material and was shown to improve substantially by increasing the concrete cover and insulation layer thickness. By increasing the VG insulation layer thickness 15, 32, 44, 57 mm, the loss in column capacity after 5 hours of fire was 30%, 13%, 7% and 5%, respectively. The obtained results demonstrate the validity of the presented approach for estimation of fire endurance and residual strength, as an alternative for fire testing, and for design of fire protection layers for FRP-confined RC columns.

Experimental and numerical investigation of a surface-fixed horizontal porous wave barrier

  • Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to study the performance of a surface-fixed horizontal porous wave barrier in regular waves. The characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients, energy dissipation, and vertical wave force were examined versus different porosities of the barrier. Numerical simulations based on 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard low-Re k-ε turbulent closure and volume of fluid approach were accomplished and compared with the experimental results conducted in a 2D wave tank. Experimental measurements and numerical simulations were shown to be in satisfactory agreement. The qualitative wave behavior propagating over a horizontal porous barrier such as wave run-up, wave breaking, air entrapment, jet flow, and vortex generation was reproduced by CFD computation. Through the discrete harmonic decomposition of the vertical wave force on a wave barrier, the nonlinear characteristics were revealed quantitatively. It was concluded that the surface-fixed horizontal barrier is more effective in dissipating wave energy in the short wave period region and more energy conversion was observed from the first harmonic to higher harmonics with the increase of porosity. The present numerical approach will provide a predictive tool for an accurate and efficient design of the surface-fixed horizontal porous wave barrier.

Effect of parameters on the tensile behaviour of textile-reinforced concrete composite: A numerical approach

  • Textile-reinforced concrete composite (TRC) is a new alternative material that can satisfy sustainable development needs in the civil engineering field. Its mechanical behaviour and properties have been identified from the experimental works. However, it is necessary for a numerical approach to consider the effect of the parameters on TRC's behaviour with lower analysis duration and cost related to the experiment. This paper presents obtained results of the numerical modelling for TRC composite using the cracking model for the cementitious matrix in TRC. As a result, the TRC composite exhibited a strain-hardening behaviour with the cracking phase characterized by the drops in tensile stress on the stress-strain curve. This model also showed the failure mode by multi-cracking on the TRC specimen surface. Furthermore, the parametric studies showed the effect of several parameters on the TRC tensile behaviour, as the reinforcement ratio, the length and position of the deformation measurement zone, and elevated temperatures. These numerical results were compared with the experiment and showed a remarkable agreement for all cases of this study.

  • The effective management of damage in tunnels is crucial for ensuring their safety, longevity, and operational efficiency. In this paper, we propose an educational management model tailored specifically for addressing damage in tunnels, utilizing numerical solution techniques. By leveraging advanced computational methods, we aim to develop a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to tunnel damage and to establish proactive measures for mitigation and repair. The proposed model integrates principles of tunnel engineering, structural mechanics, and numerical analysis to facilitate a systematic approach to damage assessment, diagnosis, and management. Through the application of numerical solution techniques, such as finite element analysis, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed model in simulating various damage scenarios and predicting their impact on tunnel performance. Additionally, the educational component of the model provides valuable insights and training opportunities for tunnel management personnel, empowering them to make informed decisions and implement effective strategies for ensuring the structural integrity and safety of tunnel infrastructure.   • Seismic quantification of nonstructural components like electrical cabinets is essential to ensure the uninterrupted operation of nuclear facilities during earthquake events. This process requires experimental tests, which can be expensive, time-consuming, and limited by safety concerns and precision. As an alternative to that, numerical simulations should be done in such a way that they are capable of capturing the global dynamic behavior with minimum computational efforts. However, in the case of complex interconnected cabinets, the simplification of numerical models often poses difficulties in illustrating the real-time behavior of combined cabinet systems. On the other hand, detailed three-dimensional (3D) numerical models require lengthy time and sophisticated computational setup, indicating their expensive computational efforts. To resolve this issue, a simplified and efficient 3D modeling approach has been proposed in this study. The accuracy of the results from the new model showed an excellent match with that obtained from the responses of the experimental test. After the validation and observation of the numerical efficiency, a practical application is implemented by considering the impacts of earthquake frequency contents on the behavior of cabinet systems. From the outcomes, it is evident that this proposed modeling methodology has the potential to replace the complex combined nuclear cabinet models for earthquake evaluation.

Computational Solution of a H-J-B equation arising from Stochastic Optimal Control Problem

  • In this paper, we consider numerical solution of a H-J-B (Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman) equation of elliptic type arising from the stochastic control problem. For the numerical solution of the equation, we take an approach involving contraction mapping and finite difference approximation. We choose the It(equation omitted) type stochastic differential equation as the dynamic system concerned. The numerical method of solution is validated computationally by using the constructed test case. Map of optimal controls is obtained through the numerical solution process of the equation. We also show how the method applies by taking a simple example of nonlinear spacecraft control.

An Adaptive Input Data Space Parting Solution to the Synthesis of N euro- Fuzzy Models

  • This study presents an approach for approximation an unknown function from a numerical data set based on the synthesis of a neuro-fuzzy model. An adaptive input data space parting method, which is used for building hyperbox-shaped clusters in the input data space, is proposed. Each data cluster is implemented here as a fuzzy set using a membership function MF with a hyperbox core that is constructed from a min vertex and a max vertex. The focus of interest in proposed approach is to increase degree of fit between characteristics of the given numerical data set and the established fuzzy sets used to approximate it. A new cutting procedure, named NCP, is proposed. The NCP is an adaptive cutting procedure using a pure function $\Psi$ and a penalty function $\tau$ for direction the input data space parting process. New algorithms named CSHL, HLM1 and HLM2 are presented. The first new algorithm, CSHL, built based on the cutting procedure NCP, is used to create hyperbox-shaped data clusters. The second and the third algorithm are used to establish adaptive neuro- fuzzy inference systems. A series of numerical experiments are performed to assess the efficiency of the proposed approach.

  • Once assessment of material failure characteristics is captured precisely in a unified way, it can bedirectly incorporated into the structural failure assessment under various loading environments, based on the theoretical backgrounds so called Local Approach to Fracture. The aim of this study is to develop a numerical fatigue test method by continuum damage mechanics applicable for the assessment of structural integrity throughout crack initiation and structural failure based on the Local Approach to Fracture. The generalized elasto-visco-plastic constitutive equation, which can consider the internal damage evolution behavior, is developed and employed in the 3-D FEA code in order to numerically evaluate the material and/or structural responses. Explicit information of the relationships between the mechanical properties and material constants, which are required for the mechanical constitutive and damage evolution equations for each material, are implemented in numerical fatigue test method. The material constants selected from constitutive equations are used directly in the failure assessment of material and/or structures. The performance of the developed system has been evaluated with assessing the S-N diagram of stainless steel materials.

Solution for a circular tunnel in strain-softening rock with seepage forces

  • In this study, a simple numerical approach for a circular tunnel opening in strain-softening surrounding rock is proposed considering out-of-plane stress and seepage force based on Biot's effective stress principle. The plastic region of strain-softening surrounding rock was divided into a finite number of concentric rings, of which the thickness was determined by the internal equilibrium equation. The increments of stress and strain for each ring, starting from the elastic-plastic interface, were obtained by successively incorporating the effect of out-of-plane stress and Biot's effective stress principle. The initial value of the outmost ring was determined using equilibrium and compatibility equations. Based on the Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) and generalized Hoek-Brown (H-B) failure criteria, the stress-increment approach for solving stress, displacement, and plastic radius was improved by considering the effects of Biot's effective stress principle and the nonlinear degradation of strength and deformation parameters in plastic zone incorporating out-of-plane stress. The correctness of the proposed approach is validated by numerical simulation.
