The increased water level caused by tidal motion at Indokyo is analyzed by the NETWORK model. The tidal effect is studied for 3 real floods in 1990 and 8 classified hypothetical floods in which the peak discharges are in the range of 2, 000-20, 000CMS. The result of numerical simulation shows that the tidal effect is decreased as the flood is increased. The surged level is 50cm when the flood discharge is 2, 000CMS, showing that its effect is considerable. However it shows only 9cm when the discharge is 7, 000CMS which corresponds to 4.5cm of standard flood level of MOC. Therefore, so it may be possible to neglect the influence of the tidal fluctuation when the peak discharge of a flood is bigger than 7, 000CMS.

Finite element grid refinements with different intensities having 14 K, 52 K and 211 K on the Yellow Sea (YS) have been constructed to make precise tidal simulations. In the meanwhile 57 K grid was made to the extended North Western Pacific (NWP) sea. Numerical simulation were done based on 32 parallel processors by using pADCIRC v 49.21 model. In the YS tidal simulation on YS-G52K and YS-G211K grid structure, KorBathy30s and ETOPO1 bathymetry data are used and 4 major tidal constituents are prescribed from FES2004. Computed results are in good agreement within 0.138 meter in RMS error for amplification and 14.80 degree of phase compared to observed tidal records. Similar error bounds are acquired in the extended NWP tidal simulation on NWP-G57K grid with 8 tidal constituent prescription on the open boundary.

In this study, the flow characteristics of the sea region, where tidal current and shock waves are combined, are identified using a three-dimensional numerical model (Princeton Ocean Model, POM). The model is adopted and applied for simulating the flows of the sea region near the open sections during the seadike closure work of Sihwa Seadike which was closed in 1994. The simulation results show that the shock waves with high velocities propagate through the sections toward the inside and outside of the seadike during the periods of the spring and ebb tides, respectively. It is found that the phenomena of flow separation occur near the shock waves; as the shock waves extend to wider zones after passing the sections, their effects on the tidal current become weak. In addition, the longitudinal velocity profiles of the flows are revealed to be affected by the shock waves. For all the simulations, at the ebb tide, the drawdown of the water levels occurs in front of the open section, respectively, especially, hydraulic jump occurs when simulating the case of maximum difference in water level between the inside and outside of the seadike. As a result, it is thought that the flow characteristics of the sea region dominated by shock waves need to be identified employing three-dimensional analysis approach, which is expected to provide the information for ocean engineering works and facility management.
On the basis of the potentials for the growth of local economy and the result of investigation of the ocean space development status, an ocean resort complex was proposed at the small harbor with a parallel beach in the east coast of Korea. As the development plan needs to reclaim the noticeable amount of coastal water area together with the applied shore facilities, it is necessary to analyze their impacts. Here, it was intended to analyze the coastal environment change such as water circulation and bottom change because of the development plan. A horizontal two-dimensional numerical model was applied to represent the combined impact of wind waves and tidal currents to sediment transport in that coastal region. Based on the result of 30 days tidal current simulations considering major four tidal components of $M_2$,$S_2$,$K_1$ and $O_1$ for the upper and lower boundaries and wind field data, bottom change was discussed. Flow velocities were not changed much at outer breakwater of Yangpo harbor. Bottom was eroded by maximum 1.7m after construction but some locations such as lee side of outer breakwater and some islets near the entrance shows isolated accretions. Although it needs more field observations for bottom change in the period of construction, the numerical calculation shows that there exist small impacts near the entrance area and coastal boundaries because of the development.

In order to understand the flow properties of the South Sea of Korea, tidal currents, wind-driven currents, density-driven currents and residual flows were investigated by using 3-dimensional numerical model(POM). In offshore regions, tide-induced residual current tends to flow eastward during the spring tide and westward during the neap tide. Total residual flow is irregular due to the bottom topography in the coastal area. The density-driven currents in the coastal area showed to be relatively weak, with little seasonal differences. The special tendency was apparent in the open sea. That is, the flow in the offshore regions showed results similar to that of the Tsushima current. The wind-driven currents in the coastal area showed to be much stronger than in offshore regions. Vertically, the flow of the surface layer was much stronger than that of the bottom layer. Through these results, material transport and diffusion in the south coast, as a basis for predicting the spread of use is expected to be available.

This study aims at predicting the behavior of saturated soft clayey foundation subjected to earth structure loads such as tidal dike, embankment etc. by using Biot's consolidation equation coupled with elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model. To validate the computer program developed b author, a case study was performed for the site of Kwang-yang steel works improved by sand drain, where since the beginning of the works, field measurements(settlement, lateral displacement and excess pore water pressure) had been accurately achieved. Comparisons between numerical results and observation values were carried out. The main results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Settlement and lateral displacement between numerical and observation values show satisfactory accordance. 2. As for the exess pre water pressure, numerical results appear to be larger than observation values, which may be due to the existence of sand seams which were not found during soil investigation. 3. Useful data available for failure prediction of soft foundation can be secured by examining lateral displacement, settlement, exess pore water pressure and stress paths.

Water circulation plays a crucial role in regulating the salinity of estuaries, which is essential for the survival of estuarine organisms. Changes in freshwater inflows or sea level can have significant impacts on the distribution and abundance of species within these ecosystems. To better understand these dynamics, this paper presents a study of water circulation and salinity distribution in Seomjin River estuary using the Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) numerical model. An extreme scenario was simulated to assess the potential impact of tidal currents and river flow discharge on circulation and salinity distribution. The results of this study have important implications for managing estuarine ecosystems and conserving their associated biodiversity.

In order to effectively and economically apply the previous POM(Princeton Ocean Model) WAD(Wetting And Drying) to the coastal area, the POM WAD was modified such as the water elevation input of tidal harmonics in the open boundaries was included and a CTS(Computing Time Saving) technique was introduced to the model. The modified model was tested to the standing waves in the rectangular bay and the hydraulic experiments for the flow and heat diffusion in the 3D basin. The numerical results showed a good agreement with the analytical solutions of the standing waves and the observed values by the hydraulic experiments, respectively. And also when the modified model with the CTS technique was applied to Gwangyang Bay of Korea, the computing time was decreased by as much as 39.4%.
This paper deals with the theory for rotational motion of a two-layer Earth model (an inelastic mantle and liquid core) including the dissipation in the mantle-core boundary(CMB) along with tidal effects produced by Moon and Sun. An analytical solution being derived using Hori's perturbation technique at a second order Hamiltonian. Numerical nutation series will be deduced from the theory.

With the economic development in China, the utilization of silty and muddy coasts including the construction of deepwater harbors and channels are being carried out at a fast pace. In these projects, the key technology involved is sediment transport. Due to the complication of sediment problems under the actions of tidal currents and wind waves, physical experiments are necessary In addition to numerical model studies. (omitted)
