  • Phase-locked loops (PLL) based on the synchronous reference frame (SRF-PLL) have recently become the most widely-used for grid synchronization in three phase grid-connected inverters. However, it is difficult to study their performance since they are nonlinear systems. To estimate the performances of a SRF-PLL, a canonical small-signal linearized model has been developed in this paper. Based on the proposed model, several significant specifications of a SRF-PLL, such as the capture time, capture rang, bandwidth, the product of capture time and bandwidth, and steady-state error have been investigated. Finally, a noise model of a SRF-PLL has been put forward to analyze the noise rejection ability by computing the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of a SRF-PLL. Several simulation and experimental results have been provided to verify and validate the obtained conclusions. Although the proposed model and analysis method are based on a SRF-PLL, they are also suitable for analyzing other types of PLLs.

  • Clipping is a simple and convenient PAPR reduction method to prevent the high-speed OFDM communication system from the nonlinear distortion. However, it inherently produces clip noise so that BER performance can be degraded. Clipping noise can be divided into in-band and out-of-band clipping noise. In this paper, we study the clipping effect on the forward link of the OFDM-FDMA system. BER performance of OFDM-FDMA system using clipping method is theoretically analyzed. We also investigate the BER performance of the clipped OFDM-FDMA signal through the HPA. From the simulation results it can be quantified how much the BER performance of OFDM-FDMA system is degraded by the clipping method. From the study results, we can choose the appropriate IBO value and CR(clip ratio) to get the desired BER performance.

  • Noise reduction is necessary to compensate for the degradation of recognition performance by various types of noises. Among many noise reduction techniques using microphone array, generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) has been widely applied to reduce nonstationary noises. The performance of GSC is directly affected by its adaptation mode controller (AMC). That is, accurate target speech detection is essential to guarantee the sufficient noise reduction in pure noise intervals and the less distortion in target speech intervals. Thus, this paper proposes an improved AMC design technique in which the power ratio of the output of fixed beamforming to that of blocking matrix is calculated frequency bandwise and probabilistically modeled by mixture Gaussians for each class. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional AMCs in receiver operating curves (ROC) and output SNRs.

  • Gamma-ray images generally suffer from a lot of noise because of low photon detection in the gamma camera system. The purpose of this study is to improve the image quality in gamma-ray images using a gamma camera system with a fast nonlocal means (FNLM) noise reduction algorithm with an acceleration function. The designed FNLM algorithm is based on local region considerations, including the Euclidean distance in the gamma-ray image and use of the encoded information. To evaluate the noise characteristics, the normalized noise power spectrum (NNPS), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and coefficient of variation (COV) were used. According to the NNPS result, the lowest values can be obtained using the FNLM noise reduction algorithm. In addition, when the conventional methods and the FNLM noise reduction algorithm were compared, the average CNR and COV using the proposed algorithm were approximately 2.23 and 7.95 times better than those of the noisy image, respectively. In particular, the image-processing time of the FNLM noise reduction algorithm can achieve the fastest time compared with conventional noise reduction methods. The results of the image qualities related to noise characteristics demonstrated the superiority of the proposed FNLM noise reduction algorithm in a gamma camera system.

  • We demonstrate wavelength conversion of 2.5Gb/s optical signals by four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We investigate the effect of input pump and signal powers on the coversion efficiency, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and extinction ratio to be a measure of performance in a wavelength converter. As a result, we show that the maximum bit error rate (BER) performance can be obtained by co promising among high-vonversion efficiency (minimum Pprobe), high-OSNR (maximum Pprobe) and low-cross-gain saturation effects (Pprobe kept at least 6dB weaker than Ppump). In our experiment, we obtain optimum performance at +3 dBm pump power and -6dBm signal power. The power penalty incurred in the wavelength conversion can be minimized by careful selection of the input pump and signal powers. We show that about 0.5dB power penalty for 3.2nm wavelength coversion at 10-10 BER is achievable.

  • A theoretical model has been studied to describe the sound radiation analysis for structure vibration noise of vehicle tires under the action of random moving line forces. When a tire is analyzed, it had been modeled as curved beams with distributed springs and dash pots that represent the radial, tangential stiffness and damping of tire, respectively. The reaction due to fluid loading on the vibratory response of the curved beam is taken into account. The curved beam is assumed to occupy the plane y=0 and to be axially infinite. The expression for sound power is integrated numerically and the results examined as a function of Mach number, wave-number ratio and stiffness factor. The experimental investigation for structure vibration noise of vehicle tire under the action of random moving line forces has been made. Based on the Spatial Transformation of Sound Field techniques, the sound power and sound radiation are measured. Results strongly suggest that operation condition in the tire material properties and design factors of the tire govern the sound power and sound radiation characteristics.

  • The piezoelectric coupling in piezoelectric vibration energy harvesters with load resistance induces electrical damping as well as increase in the system stiffness. Starting from analytically deriving the explicit relations through governing equations in the frequency domain, this work identifies the characteristics of the electrically induced damping mechanism and shows that the electrically induced damping serves as a structural hysteretic damping on condition that a piezoelectric vibration energy harvester is excited at its short-circuit resonant frequency and its load resistor is optimally impedance- matched at the same time. Finally, it is analytically verified that the equivalence of a mechanical and an electrically induced damping ratio is required for the maximum power generation at a load resistor, which was claimed in some literature.

  • LPWAN(Low Power Wide Area Network) technology is M2M (Machine to Machine) networking technology for the Internet of Things. The technology is designed to support low-power, long-distance and low-speed communications that are typical of LoRaWAN(Long Range Wide Area Network). To exchange inter-object information using a LoRaWAN, the link performances for various environments must be known. however, active performance analysis research that is based on an empirical environment is nonexistent. Therefore, this paper empirically evaluates the performance of the LoRa (Long Range) link, a physical communication technology of the LoRaWAN for various variables that may affect the link quality in indoor and outdoor environments. To achieve this, a physical performance monitoring system was designed and implemented. A communication experiment environment was subsequently constructed based on the indoor and outdoor conditions. The SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio), RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indication), and the PDR(Packet Delivery Ratio) were evaluated.

  • The performance of noncoherent FH/FSK system in the presence of multitone jamming and noise is analyged. Random and the structured jammings are considered as a multitone jamming model. The probability density function is derived and then optimum decision rule is applied to determine error probability of each cases. As a result, error probabilities of random and structured multitone jamming are shown as a function of number of jamming tones, jamming to signal power ratio, jamming signal phase and one jamming tone power to signal power ratio under Worst-case Jamming interference. It is found that error probability is maximam when one jamming tone power to signal power ratio is 1. Also we know that error performance of random and structured jamming is almost equal.
