  • To explore the social construction of the concept of leadership, image of media mogul depicted in the popular business newspaper, the Wall Street Journal, was analyzed. Then, the reconstructed image of the CEO was compared with the firm's stock price change to see their relationship, if any. This paper focused on the case of Steve Case (previous chairman of AOL Time Warner), who was the leader of the world largest media company. The period for the analysis was three years and five months from his inauguration(January 2000) to the resignation(May 2003). In general, CEO of a firm represents the firm itself. Thus, the image of the CEO is highly transcends to the image of the firm as well. Consequently, the image of CEO might have an impact on the firm's performance. Since business newspaper works as one of the most important information intermediaries in the stock market, the image of CEO constructed in the newspaper might be a critical indicator for the investors. The results revealed that media coverage of Steve Case was commensurate with the financial performance, particularly stock price change of the AOL Time Warner.

  • This study testes an application possibility of the Elaboration Likelihood Model broadly used in communication science into forest science and examines the communication effects according to the media types. To examine the effectiveness of this model, the study sets involvement, the need for cognition, and the need for effect as motivation variable and prior knowledge as an ability variable. Most variables appear to be significant in the regression analysis and results of the study verify the possibility of the application of the Elaboration Likelihood Model in forest science. To measure the media effects, a simulation is also carried out using three media including television, newspaper, and the Internet. According to ANOVA analysis, television is more persuasive than newspaper, and there is no difference between television and the Internet in terms of persuasiveness. Regarding recall, television and the Internet are more effective than newspaper. Finally, the present study suggests effective and efficient forest communication policies based on the results.

  • This study examines newspaper obituaries in Korean media and English media. Initially, 100 Korean obituaries were collected from the JoongAng Ilbo which span over more than three years, from May 2011 to August 2014. After that, another 50 Korean obituaries were gathered from the DongA Ilbo which were published over the same time period with the JoongAng Ilbo. As for English newspapers, obituaries from the New York Times and the Guardian were included in the corpus for comparison. First, the structure and composition of obituaries in each language (Korean and English) are compared. Korean obituaries show a pattern of a combination of a death notice and an obituary. Second, distinct features of each newspaper are discussed. The JoongAng Ilbo has its obituary section titled "Life and Memories", and the DongA Ilbo's obituaries are under the heading of "Rest in Peace." Obituaries in the New York Times appear in print on different pages of the paper according to the deceased's field of interest. Following discussion of formal structure and characteristics of each newspaper, Korean and English obituaries will be compared in terms of content and cultural context.

The analyses were based on job categories, genders, and ages. As the result of the analysis, students read the internet newspapers the most. According to gender and age, job category was also significant. Males were mostly studiers, then office workers, and professionals, and females were mostly students, then office workers, unemployed, and housewife. The research confirmed that internet newspaper readers read real-time news conveniently whenever, wherever. This suggests a theological basis for media policy by implying paid paper-based newspaper readers are shifting to free, internet-based newspapers using cellular phones.

  • The increasing use of newsprints in the media and an advertisement have brought the needs to improve the printing quality of the advance full-color newspaper. The printability coefficients used in this research such as Ymax for the density and Tollenaar's density smoothness constant value $\ulcorner$m$\lrcorner$ were introduced early in Europe and have been in use to control printing quality. In order to improve printing quality of domestic full-color newsprints, those printability coefficients could be used to control printing quality. This study was carried out to measure the printability coefficients of domestic full-color newspapers. Four kinds of domestic newspapers and two kinds of newspaper printing inks were tested by IGT printability tester. The printed density smoothness coefficient $\ulcorner$m$\lrcorner$ value showed good results when the samples have low porosity and roughness. The printability coefficients obtained are expected to be useful to the korean newspaper printing industry.

  • In this paper, we look at mediation of public policies in different areas of governance. Editorials appearing in an Indian English language newspaper during the period of an intense public debate on the issue of affirmative action in favor of a section of the population, the Other Backward Classes (OBC) - a popular reference to the socially and educationally backward classes of citizens under India's constitution constitute the sample for the study. Apart from editorials on the public policy of reservation of seats in admission to higher education institutions for the OBC, editorials on three other areas of governance, namely, development, economy, and public administration appearing in the same newspaper, are also consulted to understand media framing of social issues and more specifically, issues of social justice. Inductively identifying the various frames used in its editorials by the newspaper, I detect predominant use of 'personalized' frame in respect of editorials pertaining to the policy area of social justice; and distinguish it from the 'generic' frame of 'characterization' found in theory. The study concludes that the sample editorials in respect of other public policies did not use the personalized frame found in editorials on social justice.

Study 1 examined the frame effects with the issue of the Candlelit Protest in 2008 and Study 2 did with the issue of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project. Results indicated that in both studies two frames had main effects on readers' attitude and yet their interaction was not significant. In both studies, effects of personal frame were partially significant on the perceived fairness of the article, but main effects of media frame and interaction effects between two frames were not significant. These findings demonstrated that readers' attitude towards newspaper articles and on their perceived fairness would be influenced by their headlines and their source along with their content.
