Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the performance following the application of the pilot program for the education nurse system of the Ministry of Health and Welfare in a medical institution. Methods: This study was employed a non-homogeneous comparative group design by comparing new nurses who entered the medical institution after the pilot project from December 2019 to April 2020 with new nurses who entered before the pilot project during the same period. Satisfaction, academic achievement, job adaptation, personal turnover within one year, and patient safety incident rate were investigated as performance indicators. Results: After the pilot project, the overall satisfaction among new nurses, preceptors, and fellow nurses increased, but there were no significant changes in academic achievement and job adaptation in new nurses. The personal turnover rate decreased from 15.6% to 9.1%, and the patient safety incident rate also decreased from 26.3% to 15.7%. Also, the preceptor overtime also decreased from 3.67 to 0.66 hours. Conclusion: The performance of the pilot project for the education nurse system was related to improvements in satisfaction, turnover rate of new nurses, patient safety incident rate, and preceptor overtime. Above all long-term monitoring of each performance indicator is necessary through the continuation of the education nurse system of the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Out of 3,149 total subjects, 2,705(85.9%)nurses applied for U. S. A. nurse license. Eighty percent of the applicants of the U. S. A. nurse license examination applied for the New York states. The number of applicants for Canada was 215(6.8%), followed by Australia 88(2.8%), U. K. 86(2.7%), and New Zealand 45(1.4%). Average age of the applicants was 31, 49.0% of them were in their twenties. Three year college graduates accounted for 64.1% B.S.N. 33.9%. Applicants graduated from universities or colleges of Seoul area were 37.3%, followed by Daegu. The total number of nurses employed overseas were 1,291 during 2001 and 2002. Seven hundred thirty eight nurses(57.2%) were employed in the U. S. A.. Average age was 34, 60.9% were 3year college graduates, nurses graduated from Seoul area were 44.9%. No one applied for Saudi Arabian nurse license, 172 nurses were employed during 1999 and 2002, 39.5% of them were in their thirties. Conclusion: The results of this study shows relatively young and experienced nurses have intention to migrate internationally and they actually migrate to other countries. Comparing the number of nurses migrating to other country with the number of newly issued nurse licenses in Korea every year. the percentage of overseas employment was relatively high. To cope with Korean nurses international migration. new policy to monitor the status of nurse's international migration and an institution to deal with the affairs should be established. And the further study is needed to measure nurse's competence and influencing factors of Korean nurses employed in the U. S. A.
Background. Adequate staffing is necessary to meet patient care needs and provide safe, quality nursing care. In November 1999, the Korean government implemented a new staffing policy that differentiates nursing fees for inpatients based on nurse-to-bed ratios. The purpose was to prevent hospitals from delegating nursing care to family members of patients or paid caregivers, and ultimately deteriorating the quality of nursing care services. Purpose. To examine nurse staffing levels and related factors including hospital, nursing and medical staff, and financial characteristics. Methods. A cross-sectional design was employed using two administrative databases, Medical Care Institution Database and Medical Claims Data for May 1-31, 2002. Nurse staffing was graded from 1 to 6, based on grading criteria of nurse-to-bed ratios provided by the policy. The study sample consisted of 42 tertiary and 186 general acute care hospitals. Results. None of tertiary or general hospitals gained the highest nurse staffing of Grade 1 (i.e., less than 2 beds per nurse in tertiary hospitals; less than 2.5 beds per nurse in general hospitals). Two thirds of the general hospitals had the lowest staffing of Grade 6 (i.e., 4 or more beds per nurse in tertiary hospitals; 4.5 or more beds per nurse in general hospitals). Tertiary hospitals were better staffed than general hospitals, and private hospitals had higher staffing levels compared to public hospitals. Large-sized general hospitals located in metropolitan areas had higher staffing than other general hospitals. Occupancy rate was positively related to nurse staffing. A negative relationship between nursing assistant and nurse staffing was found in general hospitals. A greater number of physician specialists were associated with better nurse staffing. Conclusions. The staffing policy needs to be evaluated and modified to make it more effective in leading hospitals to increase nurse staffing.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the role experience of preceptor nurses in general hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from 10 experienced preceptor nurses through in-depth interviews about their experiences. The main question was "How do you describe your experience as a preceptor in the process of role adaptation?" Qualitative data from field and transcribed notes were analyzed using Strauss & Corbin's grounded theory methodology. Results: The core category of experience in the process of role adaptation as a preceptor nurse was identified as 'being responsible to teach from beginning to end'. The participants identified five interactional strategies; 'abruptly having to take the role as a preceptor unwilling', 'difficulties in field training with variable situations', 'preceptor and new nurse with love and hate relationships', 'bring up preceptee as a child', 'redefining the concept of preceptor'. Conclusion: The results of this study provide useful information for understanding the role of preceptor nurses in general hospital who have to teach new nurses with patience and responsibility. It will be needed to establishment of preceptor's role and educational standards, and policy for their rewards by nurse manager. Additionally, making cooperative educational climate in nursing ward is important for teaching new nurse.
Purpose: The study was done to identify turnover intention in new nurses according to characteristics of the nurses and other factors affecting turnover and to provide data to set up a strategy to reduce the turnover. Methods: Data were collected from 1,077 new nurses who had less than 12 months employment experience and worked in one of 188 hospitals. Eight research instruments were used. Data analysis was done using SPSS WIN 15.0 program. Results: Several factors influence new nurse turnover intention. The average score for turnover intention was 2.12. The scores for subscales were self efficacy, 3.76, nursing performance, 3.90, job satisfaction, 2.09, organization commitment, 1.28, stress, 1.32, burnout, 2.82 and nursing organizational culture, 3.29. Turnover intention was related to self efficacy, nursing performance, job satisfaction, organization commitment, stress, burnout, nursing organizational culture, duration of in-class training, duration of on the job training, number of hospital beds, length of employment and duration of employment in current workplace. The predicting factors for turnover intention were burnout, stress, duration of employment in the current workplace, self efficacy and nursing performance. Those factors explained 51.6% of turnover intention. Conclusion: New nurse turnover intention can be reduced by mitigating the factors affecting this intention.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify core competencies for new nurses and valuate the appropriateness and capability of core competencies. Methods: Mixed method was applied for the study. Qualitative data were obtained from preceptor and nurse manager utilizing an open-ended survey question and qualitative data analysis was conducted. The quantitative data were collected from 238 nurses (79 new nurses, 78 preceptors, 81 nurse managers) and descriptive statistics, ANOVA, $x^2$ tests were applied. Results: Three themes (20 contents) were identified as core competencies: competency as an employee, competency to perform nursing care for patient, competency to maintain nursing expertise. New nurses recognized themselves as having higher competency as an employee and to perform nursing care for patient when compared to nurse managers. Conclusion: The findings identified core competencies for new nurses need to be reflected to developing human resource management strategies for hiring new nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine comparison in the frequency and importance of nurse's job in new graduate nurses working in musculoskeletal ward. Method: A descriptive design was used with convenience sampling of 72 new graduate nurses working in musculoskeletal ward of the 2 hospitals with over 500 beds. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Results: 1) The total score for frequency of nurse's job was $2.57{\pm}.41$ and the total score for importance of nurse's job was $3.00{\pm}.37$. 2) The most frequent category was to manage for a medication and the most frequent item was to administer a medication in the order. 3) The most important category was to control of tissue perfusion and the most important item was to keep the aseptic techniques. 4) The frequencies among the work places were different significantly in 3 categories. 5) The importances among the work places were different significantly in 2 categories. Conclusion: New graduate nurses perceived the importance than the frequency of nurse's job. Also check or analysis the vital sign and nurses job associated with medication were higher score. Therefore, further research is needed to develop the educational strategies to strengthen not only theory also practice.

Nurse staffing level is an important factor that influences the quality of health service and patient outcomes. This study was carried out to examine the current state of acute hospital nurse staffing and find out factors that affect the nurse staffing level. Nurse staffing of individual hospitals was measured using the number of registered nurses per 100 beds. Descriptive and multiple regression analyses were conducted using 592 acute care hospitals' data. Regression model included structure factors such as referral level, ownership, medical and general staffing, and financial outcome factors such as occupancy rate, inpatient and outpatient revenues. Market characteristics included strength of competition, supply of nurses, and income and health status level of consumers. The average number of nurses per 100 beds was 28 and showed a great variation according to the referral level. Regression model explained this variation as much as 76.87%. Hospital structure variables which affecting the hospital nurse staffing level positively were ICU bed ratio, the staffing level of specialist, training doctor and employees except doctor and nursing personnel, while the negative factor was nurse aid staffing level. General hospitals employed more nurses than hospitals. Among outcome characteristics, occupancy rate and the amount of health insurance inpatient revenue affected positively on the hospital nurse staffing level. The more supply of the new nurse and the higher consumer income and health status in the medical service markets, the more nurses were employed by the medical institutes. According to the study result, hospitals employed more nurses when they had more financial incentive by increasing nurses. This means appropriate hospital incentive policy and regulation policy, which hospital violate nurse staffing level have to pay penality, should be needed. Clarifying job description between nurses and nurse aids and the reentry program for unemployed experienced nurses will be helpful to increase nurse staffing level.
This study was to compare the recognition of future career and nurse's characteristics according to nursing school system. This study was based on cross sectional descriptive method. The data were analyzed by $x^2$-test, t-test, and ANOVA using PASW WIN 18.0 program. The data represented that students who were doing associated degrees or bachelor degrees, showed the similar level recognition of future career and nurse's characteristics. However they showed differences in recognition of the career where they could create and new things(t=2.933, p=.004) and working part time(t=2.328, p=.021). In regards to recognition of nurse's characteristics bachelor degrees students had higher professional ethics($4.59{\pm}.44$). This study proposed that these research results could be used for improving methodology of nursing education.
