Happy Applicants Achieve More: Expressed Positive Emotions Captured Using an AI Interview Predict Performances

  • Do happy applicants achieve more? Although it is well established that happiness predicts desirable work-related outcomes, previous findings were primarily obtained in social settings. In this study, we extended the scope of the "happiness premium" effect to the artificial intelligence (AI) context. Specifically, we examined whether an applicant's happiness signal captured using an AI system effectively predicts his/her objective performance. Data from 3,609 job applicants showed that verbally expressed happiness (frequency of positive words) during an AI interview predicts cognitive task scores, and this tendency was more pronounced among women than men. However, facially expressed happiness (frequency of smiling) recorded using AI could not predict the performance. Thus, when AI is involved in a hiring process, verbal rather than the facial cues of happiness provide a more valid marker for applicants' hiring chances.

A study of the impact of the married life of married women from the baby boom generation on the Happiness Index (베이비붐세대 기혼여성의 부부생활이 행복지수에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is about the happiness of married women from the baby boom generation. The study aims to understand the impact of the married life of such women on the happiness index and to improve the happiness of married women by improving married life. The data for this study were drawn from the National Women and Family Panel Survey (4th year data) carried out by the Korean Women's Development Institute. The subjects for the final analysis totaled 885 married women from the baby boom generation, born between 1955 and 1963. Of these, 550 were married women in a dual income family, and 335 were married women in a husband-income family. IBM SPSS Statistic 21.0 was used. The findings from this study are as follows: First, the women's happiness index was higher in cases where the women had a more positive view of their husbands, the more often they were involved in leisure activities, the better their conflict resolution whenever there was a clash of opinions, and the more satisfied they were with the division of household labor. Second, in the case of dual income families, the women's happiness index was higher where they had a positive view of their husbands, their conflicts were better resolved, and the more satisfied they were with the division of household labor. Third, in the case of married women in a husband-income family, their happiness index rose the more positively they perceived their husbands, the more often they were involved in leisure activities together, and the more satisfied they were with the division of household labor.

Discriminant Analysis of the WSSECT on Early Childhood Teachers' Happiness and Job Satisfaction (유아교사의 일터영성 척도(WSSECT)의 타당화 : 행복감과 직무만족도에 대한 판별력)

  • This study was to validate the WSSECT (Workplace Spirituality Scale for Early Childhood Teacher) using discriminant analysis on early childhood teachers' happiness and job satisfaction. The data from 504 teachers working at kindergartens and daycare centers were analyzed statistically through t-test and discriminant analysis. The results indicated that 1) the higher group in workplace spirituality significantly gets more scores of happiness and job satisfaction than the lower group, 2) 4 factors of the WSSECT have discriminant power on early childhood teachers' happiness, and 3) 2 factors ('meaning for life' and 'calling for ECE teacher job') of the WSSECT are effective to discriminate early childhood teachers' job satisfaction. Further statistical works are supplementary needed to validate the WSSECT and to increase its'feasibility.

Synchronization of Dynamical Happiness Model

  • Chaotic dynamics is an active research area in fields such as biology, physics, sociology, psychology, physiology, and engineering. Interest in chaos is also expanding to the social sciences, such as politics, economics, and societal events prediction. Most people pursue happiness, both spiritual and physical in many cases. However, happiness is not easy to define, because people differ in how they perceive it. Happiness can exist in mind and body. Therefore, we need to be happy in both simultaneously to achieve optimal happiness. To do this, we need to synchronize mind and body. In this paper, we propose a chaotic synchronization method in a mathematical model of happiness organized by a second-order ordinary differential equation with external force. This proposed mathematical happiness equation is similar to Duffing's equation, because it is derived from that equation. We introduce synchronization method from our mathematical happiness model by using the derived Duffing equation. To achieve chaotic synchronization between the human mind and body, we apply an idea of mind/body unity originating in Oriental philosophy. Of many chaotic synchronization methods, we use only coupled synchronization, because this method is closest to representing mind/body unity. Typically, coupled synchronization can be applied only to non-autonomous systems, such as a modified Duffing system. We represent the result of synchronization using a differential time series mind/body model.

The Variables Related to Maternal Happiness for Mothers of Young Children, School-Aged Children, and Adolescents : A Child's Age, the Numbers of Children, and Maternal Perceptions of the Conditions of Happiness (유아-청소년 자녀를 둔 어머니의 행복감 영향 변인 : 자녀의 연령, 자녀수 및 어머니 행복 조건에 대한 인식)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a child's demographic variables and maternal perceptions of the conditions of happiness on their happiness for mothers. The participants of this study comprised 916 mothers of young children, school-aged children, and adolescents. The results revealed that a child's age and the numbers of children influenced maternal happiness when mothers' demographic variables were controlled. In addition, mothers who exhibited high degree of need in terms of the conditions of happiness regarding existence, relatedness, and growth were more likely to be happy than mothers who exhibited low degree of needs. Finally, the expectations regarding growth, which refers to the pursuit of self-accomplishment and meaning, was the most important predictor of maternal happiness. These findings have implications for parent education programs for mothers of young children, school-aged children, and adolescents.

Domestic Research Trends on Nurse Happiness (간호사 행복에 대한 국내 연구 동향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of nurse' happiness by reviewing literature on happiness of nurses reported in Korea. A total of seven articles were selected as a result of searching for academic papers announced in combination with "nurses," and "happiness" from the database(via NANET, RISS, KSI-KISS, DBpia). Since 2013, a paper on the happiness of nurses has been published The results of this study are as follows: research sources are "nursing journal" and "other nursing journal", research tools are Lyuvomirsky & Lepper (1999) and OECD Better Life Index (2012), Institutional Review of Board(IRB) "approval" and "unapproved" 50% respectively. Future research seems to require the development of happiness tools for considering organizational culture and intervention program for increasing happiness of nurses.

The Longitudinal Effect of Leisure on Happiness and Health in Midlife (중년기 여가생활이 행복과 건강에 미치는 영향에 대한 종단 연구)

  • Leisure is an important role on happiness and health in midlife. Nevertheless, there has been little research using a longitudinal method in Korea to identify the influence of leisure on happiness and health. Current study examined the effect of leisure satisfaction and time for leisure activities on happiness(SHS) and health-related variables(psychological symptoms, physical symptoms, and quality of sleep) in middle aged adults(40-65 years) by longitudinal data. Two surveys were conducted with 10 months' interval and total 145 respondents(M=49.45) participated in both surveys. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to investigate that both leisure satisfaction and time for leisure activities in the first time have an effect on happiness and health-related variables in the second time after controlling for each happiness and health variables in the first time as well as demographic variables. We found that leisure satisfaction influenced beneficially on happiness(SHS), psychological symptoms, and quality of sleep after 10-month. Similarly, time for leisure activities had effect on happiness(SHS), psychological symptoms, and physical symptoms after 10-month. The implication for study were discussed.

The Effects of Achievement Goal Orientation of Gifted and General Students on their Academic Burnout and School Happiness (영재학생과 일반학생의 성취목표지향성과 학업소진이 학교행복감에 미치는 영향)

  • The main purpose of this study is to see the differences of the achievement goal orientation, academic burnout, and school happiness between gifted and general students, and also to explore the effects on school happiness of their achievement goal orientation and academic burnout. To resolve the above research questions, this study used questionnaire method to 256 1st grade middle school students and 84 gifted students enrolled in Daegu metropolitan city. All data were analyzed by SPSS WIN 19.0 program. The results of this study are as follows. First, mastery goal, performance-approach goal and performance-avoidance goal of the gifted students were higher than the general students'. Second, all sub-variables of academic burnout except hostility and total score of academic burnout of the gifted students were lower than the general students. On the other hand, all sub-variables of school happiness except relationship with friends and emotional stability and total score school happiness of the gifted students were higher than the general students. Third, this study revealed that the achievement goal and academic burnout explain considerable amount of students' school happiness. In other words, the disfavor and skeptical attitude of general students for the study hinder school happiness. Lastly, this study suggest that some program or consulting need to be administerd to change the affective attitude of students into positively. And also variety of counselling program or some instructions dealing with stress for gifted students since the exhaustion of gifted students affects considerably their school happiness.

Structural Relationship among Parent's Play Participation, Young Children's Playfulness, Self-regulation and Happiness (부모의 놀이참여와 유아의 놀이성, 자기조절능력 및 행복감 간의 구조적 관계)

  • This study examined the structural relationships among parent's play participation, children's playfulness, self-regulation and happiness. In this Study, subjects were 274 children who were 4 through 5 years old. The participants included 274 preschoolers' parents and their teachers in D city. The parents completed questionnaires regarding parent's play participation with their children and children's self-regulation. The teachers completed questionnaires regarding preschoolers' happiness and playfulness. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation analysis and mediation analysis based on structural equation modeling with SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0 program. Also, specific indirect effects were analyzed using AMOS user-defined estimand function. The primary results of this study were as follows. 1) The parent's play participation had an influence upon children's playfulness and self-regulation. 2) The children's playfulness had an influence upon children's self-regulation and happiness. 3) The children's self-regulation had an influence upon children's happiness. 4) Between the parent's play participation and children's happiness were mediated by the children's playfulness and self-regulation. This study revealed that parent's play participation, children's playfulness and self-regulation need to be considered simultaneously to explain the level of the children's happiness. The results highlight the structural relationships among parent's play participation, children's playfulness, self-regulation and happiness.

The Mediating Effects of Negative Automatic Thoughts on the Relationships between Father's Communication Style and Children's Happiness (아버지 의사소통과 아동의 주관적 행복감의 관계 : 부정적 자동적 사고의 매개역할)

  • The present study investigated the mediating effects of negative automatic thoughts on the relationship between the communication styles of fathers and their children's happiness. The participants consisted of 509 elementary school (225 5th, 6th graders) and middle school (284 1st, 2nd graders) students in Seoul and Jeonju city. The instruments used were the Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory (Barnes & Olson, 1982), the Korean Children's Automatic Thoughts Scales (Moon, 2002), and the Happiness Inventory for Children (Lee, 2005). Data were analyzed by means of both descriptive statistics and regression analysis using the SPSS (12.0 version). The results indicated that the effects of a father's communication style on children's happiness was partially mediated by their negative automatic thoughts. In conclusion, negative automatic thoughts has a mediating effect upon a father's communication style as it relates to the happiness of their children.
