  • This experiment was conducted to detect the presence of allelopathic substances in the leaves of Ginkgo biloba L. Water extracts from G. biloba leaves which collected at different season markedly inhibited the germination and growth of O. sativa, E. crus-galli, D. sanguinalis, and L. sativa, indicating the presence of biological substances. Linolenic and palmitic acid were the major fatty acids of G. biloba leaves. The biochemical substances such as salicylic arid, p-coumaric acid, catechol, hydroquinone, orchinol, ferulic acid, phloroglucinol, and umbelliferone etc., belonging to the phenolic, compounds were, detected in a large amount, which may be responsible for exhibition inhibitory effects. The common phenolic compounds were detected in the early-harvested and late-harvested G. biloba leaves were salicylic and p-coumaric acid. All these compounds were related to the allelopathic activities in G. biloba leaves.

  • Functional microorganisms decompose various organic matter by enzyme activity and suppress plant disease caused by pathogen. This study was conducted to isolate and select functional microorganisms with protein or carbohydrate degradation activities and antagonistic activity against turfgrass fungal pathogens for eco-friendly turfgrass management in golf course from compost containing livestock manure of poultry or swine. Totally 68 isolates collected from livestock manure compost strains were isolated and tested for their activities of amylase, protease and lipase and antagonistic activities against Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2, R. solani AG1-1, and Sclerotinia homoeocarpa. Among the isolates, 34 strains were selected as functional microbes showing higher activities of amylase and protease. Three isolates of ASC-14, ASC-18, and ASC-35 among the 34 strains were selected as antifungal bacterial strains repressing the above 3 turfgrass fungal pathogens. Analysis results of 16s rRNA gene sequence and phylogenic cluster indicated that ASC-14 and ASC-18 belonged to Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, while ASC-35 was B. subtilis, respectively.

  • When the rice straw mulched, the inhibition of weed growth was observed in the paddy field. If we use these allelopathic effect of decreased weed establishment, we can save labor, and protect environment. Aqueous extract of rice straw were bioassayed using water foxtail seeds to investigate chair effects on the germination and the growth, and to identify allelopathic compounds. The major results obtained were summarized as follows : Aqueous extract was fractioned by solvent, among various fractions, II-3, II-4 fractions inhibited the coleoptile and the radical of water foxtail, by 100%, respectively. There were fumaric acid and 4 unknown organic acids. Seven organic acids including fumaric acid inhibited the growth and germination of water foxtail in $10^{-2}$M solution. One of the most effective allelopathic compounds in rice straw was identified the unknown organic acid, as molecular weight 253, by GC/MS.

  • This study is aimed at classifying the syntaxa of Ceratopteris thalictroides dominant community on the Nakdong River, and to collect basic data for research of habitat. The communities were carried out by using the Z.-M. School's method and numerical classification technique. The result of syntaxa was classified three communities such as Persicaria japonica-Ceratopteris thalictroides community, Lindernia procumbens-Ceratropteris thalictroides community, and Limnophila indica-Ceratopteris thalictroides community. The ordination analysis displayed the vegetation types with respect to complex environmental gradients. After ordination and clustering analysis, the effective humidity, soil stability, trampling effects, anthropogenic effects and flooding frequency were identified as the important factors deciding the vegetation pattern. It was pointed out to establish a long-term ecological site for protecting such vulnerable vegetation against overexploitation and global climate change.

  • We investigated turfgrass diseases and inoculum density at nationwide turfgrass cultivation sites in year of 2013. Occurrences of large patch and rust disease appeared in September. Brown patch recorded in September to October at Namhea and Pythium blight disease occurred outbreaks in early July at Namhea site. Some sites in Namhea damaged 3% area of total cultivation field by Sclerotinia homoeocarp. In Daepyeong (Gyeongnam), Fairy ring and large patch were recorded. Severe takeall and fairy ring have been observed in Gochang-si. Multi-site in Cheongju-si, brown patch was observed in pandemic level. Interesting enough, a cool-season turfgrass cultivate sites in Pyeongtaek-si brown patch, leaf blast, summer patch, and Curvularia leaf spot were investigated during the surveys period. Inoculum densities (Rhizoctonia spp.) at turfgrass cultivations sites were increased as cumulatively in all survey sites. The investigation result indicated that the disease occurrence and pathogens are similar as diseases in golf courses.

  • The experiment was conducted to study the growth, developmental pattern, and seed production of Commelina benghalensis L. grown from four seed types; large and small aerial seeds, and large and small underground seeds. Plants from the four seed types differed in growth rate. Based on dry weight and leaf area, plants from large underground seeds emerged and grew faster in the first 2-4 weeks after seeding(WAS) but plants from small aerial seeds grew faster during the 4-6 WAS; thereafter, there was no significant difference in growth rate among plants from the four seed types. Based on seed production, plants from large aerial seed produced more seeds(1473) than those from small seeds(1006). Small aerial types represented 75-77% of the total seed production, large aerial seed 21-23%; only 2-4% were underground seeds. The results suggest that the plants from large underground seeds might have better competitive ability Than those of small aerial seeds during the early growth stage due to faster germination and higher dry matter production.

  • In order to select herbicides which may feasible to water-seeded rice culture, pot trial was initiated to determine phytotoxicity of rice plants to pyrazolate, bensulfuron methyl, chlormethoxynil, and benthiocarb under water-seeded condition. Pyraolate at 300 and 600 g ai/10a did not show crop injury and growth inhibition of rice plants. Bensulfuron methyl at 5.1 g ai/10a and benthiocarb at 210 g ai/10a were relatively safe to water-seeded rice plants when treated at 5 days after seeding. Chlormethoxynil at 210 g ai/10a showed crop injury and growth inhibition of rice plants and thus may not feasible to water-seeded rice culture.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate germination rate of Vicia tetrasperma and V. hirsuta as affected by storage duration, temperature, and light. All seeds of both species were gathered from Dangjin, Chungnam in the late June of 2004 and 2005, stored for a certain period of time, and then exposed for 20 days to the alternating temperatures ($15/^{\circ}C,\;20/10^{\circ}C,\;25/15^{\circ}C$, and $30/20^{\circ}C$) for evaluating the germination rate. Both 2004 and 2005, two species stored at room temperature for 3 months had germination rates less then 30% with applying various alternating temperatures for 20 days although the highest germination rate was obtained with $25/15^{\circ}C$ treatment. V. tetrasperma at 12 month storage after seed gathering in 2005 had 82% of germination rate with $25/15^{\circ}C$ treatment and showed the increased rate as time passed. V. hirsuta at 6, 9, and 12 month storage after seed gathering in 2005 ranged, however, from 33 to 53% of the germination rate at alternating temperature treatments for 20 days and did not seem to be affected by the elapsed time of the storage. Storage at room temperature was more effective for increasing germination rate of both species compared to those of the storage at low temperature. The germination rate of both species was not significantly affected by either exposure of light or short period of high temperature.
