  • In this paper, an isogeometric analysis for multipatch problem is investigated, in which two or more geometries are connected at the interface in a conforming or non-conforming conditions. To express higher continuity at the patch interface, two approaches such as Nitsche based method and master-slave method are formulated for the linear elasticity problem and discretized using the isogeometric approach using NURBS basis functions. A short comparison between two approaches in formulations reveals the pros and cons of them with the applicability in the isogeometric multipatch problem. In addition, a NURBS based stress recovery is adopted to express a better stress continuity through the post-processing. Numerical examples indicate the effectiveness of Nitsche method in the non-conforming patch, following the exact solution well. For the stress concentration problem with the conforming patch, introduced two methodologies show comparative results, meanwhile the NURBS based stress recovery presents an improved smooth stress contour in the whole domain including the patch interface.

  • This paper intends to present an application of isogeometric analysis in crack problems. An isogeometric formula is developed based on NURBS basis functions - enriched and adopted via X-FEM enrichment functions. The proposed method which is represented by the combination of the two above-mentioned methods, first by using NURBS functions models the geometry exactly and then by defining level set function on domain, identifies available discontinuity in elements. Additional DOFs are allocated to elements containing the crack and X-FEM enrichment functions enrich approximate solution. Moreover, a subelement refinement technique is used to improve the accuracy of integration by the Gauss quadrature rule. Finally, several numerical examples are illustrated to demonstrate the effectiveness, robustness and accuracy of the proposed method during calculation of crack parameters.

  • This paper presents NURBS skinning for the forebody of ship. NURBS skinning is guessed as a good method to generate the faired surface of ship forebody, but it is very problematic in real ship design to generate resonable surface of ship forbody using skinning, because there are lot of problem to apply skinning and to get reasonable surface. One of main problem is data arrangement with design data. Irregular serial contour data arise so serious compatibility problem of knot vector This paper suggests a whole process using skinning successfully in generating hull form of ship forebody This process includes how to make the data set for skinning and how to execute compatibility procedure.

  • A study on the free vibration and linear buckling analyses of thick plates is described in this article. In order to determine the natural frequencies and buckling loads of plates, a plate element is developed by using isogeometric approach. The Non-uniform B-spline surface (NURBS) is used to represent both plate geometry and the unknown displacement field of plate. All terms required in isogeometric formulation are consistently derived by NURBS definition. The capability of the present plate element is demonstrated by using several numerical examples. From numerical results, it is found to be that the present isogeometric element can predict accurate natural frequencies and buckling loads of plates.

  • The piping route of hydraulic hose is designed with avoiding interferences to surrounding components. However, in a real practice, the piping route is mostly decided with an expert's experiences on site due to the complexity of design. Thus, this paper proposes a design methodology of the optimized route of a hose. We use NURBS representation to describe the piping route, which is possible to be locally modified, and an energy minimization method is applied to avoid interferences to the surroundings. In other words, the NURBS curve describing a piping route is modified to meet the desired positions from minimizing the perturbation of the control points, and the strain energy of the curve is then optimized to make the curve natural. The proposed method is implemented and its feasibility is validated using the commercial CAD software, CATIA V5.

  • A deformable non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) based volume is programed for the force reflecting exoskeleton haptic device. In this work, a direct free form deformation (DFFD) technique is applied for the realistic manipulation. In order to implement the real-time deformation, a nodal mapping technique is used to connect points on the virtual object with the NURBS volume. This geometric modeling technique is ideally incorporated with the force reflecting haptic device as a virtual interface. The results in this work introduce details for the complete set-up for the realistic virtual clay modeling task with force feedback. The force reflecting exoskeleton haptic manipulator, coupled with a supporting PUMA 560 manipulator and the virtual clay model are integrated with the graphics display, and results show that the force feedback from the realistic physically based virtual environment can greately enhance the sense of immersion.

  • These days consumers' various demands are accelerating research on apparel manufacturing system including automatic measurement, pattern generation, and clothing simulation. Accordingly, methods of reconstructing human body from point-clouds measured using a three dimensional scanning device are required for apparel CAD system to support these functions. In particular, we present in this study a human body reconstruction method focused on two issues, which are the decision of the number of control point for each sectional curve with error bound and the local knot removal for reducing the unusual concentration of control points. The approximation of sectional curves with error bounds as an approximation criterion leads all sectional curves to their own particular shapes apart from the number of control points. In addition, the application of the local knot removal to construction of human body sectional curves reduces the unusual concentration of control points effectively. The results may be used to produce an apparel CAD system as an automatic pattern generation system and a clothing simulation system through the low level control of NUBS or NURBS.

  • Design is important in the IT, digital appliance, and auto industries. Aesthetic and art images are being applied for better design satisfaction of the products. Various artistic image patterns are used to satisfy demand of design, but it takes much lead-time and effort to implement them for making dies and molds. In this paper, a hybrid reverse engineering method generating accurate 3D engraving models from 2D art images is proposed through image processing, 3D reconstruction, and NURBS interpolation methods. In order to generate the 3D model from the 2D artistic image, cloud points with z-depth are extracted according to intensity values of the image. An adaptive median filter and harmonic filter are used to obtain the intensity values accurately. NURBS surfaces are generated through the interpolation of the cloud points. Performance of the developed system is to be confirmed through the realization of Mona Lisa and Golden Gate Bridge.

  • This paper presents the reverse design of a cam mechanism using NURBS(Nonuniform Rational B-spline curve). Cam is very difficult to make the accurate shape on the design and the manufacture. Because the cam shape is commonly made in order to move in special functions. The reverse design can be used to check accuracy between the designed data and the manufactured data of the cam shape and also reproduce the cam without the design data. The reverse design procedures consist of motion analysis and curve fitting. The motion analysis is used the central difference method and the relative velocity method to find the displacement and velocity. The curve fitting is used NURBS to develope the whole curve. The central difference method is derived in the 3 dimensional space.
