  • This experiment was performed to enhance $CH_4$ purity of landfill gas by applying gas separator membrane for purified nitrogen gas production. 1:6 area ratios of $1^{st}$ to $2^{nd}$ membrane module was suitable for $CH_4$ recovery. After separation membrane system was installed, 249 tries were performed. Average permeability for $CH_4$ was 28.4% and for $CO_2$ was 94.3%. This can explain nitrogen gas separator membrane can be applied to collect $CH_4$ from LFG. However, nitrogen permeability only reached up to 16.5%. Therefore, the final purified landfill gas concentration was rounded up to 69.7% for $CH_4$, 4.3% for $CO_2$ and 26.0% for $N_2$. For the high degree of $CH_4$ purity, $N_2$ should be kept at least under 2.0% by controlling air inflow to landfill.

  • Gas permeability of low density polyethylene (LDPE) film containing zeolite powder for $CO_2,\;O_2$ and $N_2$ were investigated. Zeolite powders modified by cations or surfactant were compounded with LDPE to produce $20 wt\%$ masterbatch. After blending the masterbatch with LDPE, zeolite filled films were prepared by the blown film process. Finally, the composite films containing zeolite loadings of 0, 3,5, and $10 wt\%$ were produced. A gas permeability apparatus based on the variable volume principle was designed to analyze the characteristics of films. Experiments showed a general trend that gas permeabilities first decreased and then increased as the zeolite content was increased. Surfactant modified zeolite showed a better interfacial adhesion with the matrix, but the film did not show a discernible difference in gas permeability compared with the other modified films. The difference of temperature dependences in the gas permeabilities of composite films was slightly smaller than that of LDPE film.

  • In this study, a mixed matrix membrane was prepared by putting the zeolitic imidazolate framework-7 (ZIF-7) synthesized in Pebax-1657 and Pebax-2533, which are representative poly(ether-b-amide), and the permeability properties of single gas such as N2 and CO2 were investigated. From the gas permeation results, in the case of N2, both the Pebax-1657/ZIF-7 and Pebax-2533/ZIF-7 mixed matrix membranes showed a similar phenomenon in which the permeability decreased with the incorporation of ZIF-7. For CO2 permeability, the tendency was slightly different depending on the type of polymer. In the Pebax-1657/ZIF-7 mixed membrane, the CO2 permeability decreased in the range of 0~3 wt% of ZIF-7, and increased at higher contents. The CO2 permeability of the Pebax-2533/ZIF-7 mixed matrix membrane gradually decreased without increasing the permeability in the range of 0~5 wt% of ZIF-7. Regarding CO2/N2 selectivity, both mixed films showed a tendency to increase with increasing the ZIF-7 content. In particular, Pebax-2533/ZIF-7 5 wt% showed the best gas permeation performance compared to other mixed matrix membrane. This is thought to be because ZIF-7 shows better compatibility with Pebax-2533 than that of Pebax-1657 and also better CO2 selective property.

  • In this study, PTMSP/LDH composite membranes were prepared by the solution intercalation method with 1, 3, and 5 wt% LDH contents to PTMSP. To investigate the physico-chemical characteristics of composite membranes, the analytical methods such as FT-IR, TGA, XRD, UTM, and SEM have been utilized, and the gas permeability and selectivity properties of $H_2$, $N_2$, and $CO_2$ were evaluated. The permeability of the PTMSP/LDH composite membranes decreased as LDH content increased and the selectivity $H_2$ and $CO_2$ showed the maximum value at 5 wt% of LDH content. Permeability of PTMSP/LDH composite membrane increased as the gas permeation pressure increased. The difference of the increase in gas permeation pressure of the permeability of PTMSP/LDH composite membrane was slightly smaller than of PTMSP membrane.

  • Molecular modeling of gas permeation through zeolite membranes with/without intercrystalline region was carried out. Molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed to estimate the diffusion coefficient and adsorption parameters respectively, and our proposed combined method of molecular simulation techniques with a permeation theory (CMP) was used to estimate gas permeability. The calculated permeability of gases (Ar, He, Ne, $N_2$, $0_2$, $CH_4$) at 301 K for the single crystal membrane model was about one order of magnitude larger than the experiential values, although the dependence on the molecular weight of the permeating species agreed with experiments. On the other hand, the estimated permeability using the diffusivity and adsorption parameters of the intercrystalline region model was in good agreement with the experiments. The consistency between experiments and the estimated values means the importance of considering the intercrystalline region and the validity of CMP method to predict the performance of zeolite membranes.

  • In this study, PTMSP[poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne)]/PDMS[poly(dimethylsioxane)]-NaY zeolite and PTMSP/PDMS-NaA zeolite composite membranes were made to incorporate zeolite into PTMSP/PDMS graft copolymer in order to improve the selectivity and thermal stability, the drop of permeability by physical aging effect during long period of time for the PTMSP membrane. To investigate the physico-chemical characteristics of composite membranes, the analytical methods such as FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, TGA, SEM, and GPC have been utilized. The gas permeability and selectivity properties of $H_2$ and $N_2$ were evaluated. The permeability of the PTMSP/PDMS-NaY zeolite and PTMSP/PDMS-NaA zeolite composite membranes than PTMSP/PDMS graft copolymer membrane increased, increased as zeolite content increased. On the contrary, the selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) of the composite membranes decreased as zeolite content increased. PTMSP/PDMS-NaA zeolite composite membrane showed better permeability and separation factor than PTMSP/PDMS-NaY zeolite composite membrane.

  • In this study, we investigated permeation of single gas ($N_2$, $O_2$, $CF_4$, and $SF_6$) through flat sheet membrane composed of PDMS (poly-dimethylsiloxane) and PEBAX (polyether block amides). Gas permeation experiment was performed with various feed pressure. Permeability was estimated using permeation flux measured by continuous-flow technique. The permeability of gases except $SF_6$ in PDMS were decreased with the upstream pressure increased. $SF_6$ is much more permeable than $CF_4$, which is due to higher critical temperature of $SF_6$. The permeability decreased in the following order: $O_2$ > $N_2$ > $SF_6$ > $CF_4$. On the other hand, the permeability of gases in PEBAX followed the order: $O_2$ > $N_2$ > $CF_4$ > $SF_6$ which are opposite of the order of kinematic diameter (${\AA}$)($SF_6$ > $CF_4$ > $N_2$ > $O_2$). The $SF_6/CF_4$ pure gas selectivity in PDMS was 2.1 at 0.7 MPa.

  • PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)-HNT (halloysite nanotube) composite membranes were prepared with different amounts tendency of HNT 5, 10, 20 and 30 wt% and rubbery polymer PDMS. The characteristics of these membranes were studied by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, and SEM. Gas permeation experiment were performed under condition of $25^{\circ}C$ and $3kg/cm^2$. Gas permeability of $N_2$, $H_2$, $CH_4$, and $CO_2$ and selectivity were investigated by increasing the amount of HNT contents in the PDMS. In $H_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, and $CO_2$ gases, as increasing HNT contents from 0 to 30 wt%, decreasing value of the permeability were observed. The selectivity of ($CO_2/N_2$) was shown in the range of 14 to 44 and the range of selectivity of ($CO_2/CH_4$) was 3.0 to 7.0.

  • In this study, polyethylene oxide (PEO)/polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-COOH composite membranes were prepared by adding 1, 2, 3, and 5 wt% of MWCNT-COOH to PEO/EVA respectively. The gas permeation properties of $N_2$, $O_2$ and $CO_2$ at $30^{\circ}C$ and 4~8 bar pressure were investigated. In each PEO/EVA/MWCNT-COOH composite membranes, the permeability of $CO_2$ increased with increasing the pressure, but the permeability of $N_2$ and $O_2$ were independent of the feeding pressure. As the MWCNT-COOH content increased, the $CO_2$ permeability increased and then decreased above 2 wt% MWCNT-COOH content. The 2 wt% MWCNT-COOH composite membrane exhibited a $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of 77.8 and a $CO_2$ permeability of 84 barrer at 8 bar. The high $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity and $CO_2$ permeability were due to the high affinity between the quadrupolar $CO_2$, polar ether groups of PEO, and the polar ester groups of EVA. Additionally, the strong affinity between $CO_2$ and the -COOH groups on the MWCNT surface contributed to the high permeability of $CO_2$.

  • PEBAX[poly(ether-block-amide)]-NaY zeolite composite membrane was studied on the permeability of penetrant $H_2$, $N_2$, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ and the selectivity. When the NaY zeolite contents of PEBAX-NaY zeolite membranes were increased, the permeability of $H_2$ was increased, but the permeability of $N_2$, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ was decreased. By the addition of NaY zeolite into PEBAX, the gas selectivity for $H_2$, $N_2$ and $CO_2$ was decreased except the increase of selectivity of $H_2/N_2$. $CO_2/N_2$, $H_2/CO_2$ and Gas/$CH_4$. The highest selectivity among these gases was from $CO_2$. In particular, the gas selectivity for $CO_2$ was the greatest with a value of 12~156.
