  • In this study, numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the load transfer mechanisms and dynamic responses between the vertical shaft and the surrounding soil using a dynamic analysis method and a pseudo-static method (called response displacement method, RDM). Numerical solutions were verified against data from the literature. A series of parametric studies was performed with three different transient motions and various surrounding soils. The results showed that the soil stratigraphy and excitation motions significantly influenced the dynamic behavior of the vertical shaft. Maximum values of the shear force and bending moment occurred near an interface between the soil layers. In addition, deformations and load distributions of the vertical shaft were highly influenced by the amplified seismic waves on the vertical shaft constructed in multi-layered soils. Throughout the comparison results between the dynamic analysis method and the RDM, the results from the dynamic analyses showed good agreement with those from the RDM calculated by a double-cosine method.

  • In this paper, a planar microstrip patch antenna is proposed using the slit on the top layer of a multi-layered structure for GPS application. The proposed antenna has a circular polarization at 1,575.42 MHz. This proposed antenna is fabricated on multi-layered FR4 substrate. The slits embedded on the top plane may yield to lower a resonance frequency and sustain a broad bandwidth. The proposed antenna size is $20{\times}20{\times}4.0\;mm^3$. The measured gain of 0.5 dBi, 10 dB bandwidth(VSWR 2:1) of 70 MHz(4.4 %), and 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidth of 15 MHz(1 %) have been obtained, respectively.

  • Solution-processed amorphous metal-oxide thin-film transistors (TFTs) are considered as promising candidates for the upcoming transparent and flexible electronics due to their transparent property, good performance uniformity and possibility to fabricate at a low-temperature. In addition, solution processing metal oxide TFTs may allow non-vacuum fabrication of flexible electronic which can be more utilizable for easy and low-cost fabrication. Recently, for high-mobility oxide TFTs, multi-layered oxide channel devices have been introduced such as superlattice channel structure and heterojunction structure. However, only a few studies have been mentioned on the bias illumination stress in the multi- layered oxide TFTs. Therefore, in this research, we investigated the effects of bias illumination stress in solution-processed bilayer oxide TFTs which are fabricated by the deep ultraviolet photochemical activation process. For studying the electrical and stability characteristics, we implemented positive bias stress (PBS) and negative bias illumination stress (NBIS). Also, we studied the electrical properties such as field-effect mobility, threshold voltage ($V_T$) and subthreshold slop (SS) to understand effects of the bilayer channel structure.

  • This paper presents a study of soil-structure interaction problems using infinite elements. The infinite elements are formulated for homogeneous and layered soil media, based on approximate expressions for three components of propagating waves, namely the Rayleigh, compressive and shear waves. The integration scheme which was proposed for problems with single wave component by waves. The integration scheme which was proposed for problems with single wave component by Zenkiewicz is expanded to the multi-waves problem. Verifications are carried out on rigid circular footings which are placed on and embedded in elastic half space. Numerical analysis is performed for a containment structure of a nuclear power plant subjected to a horizontal seismic excitation.

  • The method of characteristic matrix used in the calculation of multi-layered optical coating is applied to the analysis of DFB waveguide with arbitrary structure of grating by plecewise approximation where the DFB structure is devided into many sections in which the gain and period, amplitude and phase of DFB structure are assuced to be constant in each section. The DFB structure with two section is analyzed using this method of C-matrix. The possible applications for photonic devices using DFB waveguides are proposed.

  • The electrical properties of a back drilled via-hole (BDH) without the open-stub and the plated through via-hole (PTH) with the open-stub, which is called the conventional structure, in a high-count multi~layered (HCML) printed circuit board (PCB) were investigated for a high-speed digital system, and a selected inner layer to transmit a high-speed signal was farthest away from the side to mount the component. Within 10 GHz of the broadband frequency, a design of experiment (DOE) methodology was carried out with three cause factors of each via-hole structure, which were the distance between the via-holes, the dimensions of drilling pad and the anti-pad in the ground plane, and then the relation between cause and result factors which were the maximum return loss, the half-power frequency, and the minimum insertion loss was analyzed. Subsequently, the empirical formulae resulting in a macro model were extracted and compared with the experiment results. Even, out of the cause range, the calculated results obtained from the macro model can be also matched with the measured results within 5 % of the error.

  • Thermoelectric properties of a multi-layered thin film, which was composed with indium selenide and bismuth telluride, were investigated. The structure of the layered thin film is Bi-Te /In-Se/Bi-Te and it was prepared on sapphire substrate by RF magnetron sputter using stoichiometric $Bi_2Te_3$ (99.9%) and $In_2Se_3$(99.99%) target at room temperature. Then, it was annealed at temperature range of 150 - $500^{\circ}C$ in Ar ambient. Structural characterizations were done using X-ray diffraction(XRD, BRUKER, D8, 60kW) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM, FEI, Tecnai, F30 S-Twin), respectively. Cross-section of multi-layer structure was observed by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The resistivity and Seebeck coefficient of these samples were also measured by conventional equipment at room temperature. The maximum value of power factor was $1.16\;{\mu}W/k^2m$ at annealing temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.

  • A plane-wave incident upon asymmetric multi-layered dielectric grating as well as symmetric grating structure generates space harmonics. Selected space harmonics among those harmonics can undergo strong resonance scattering variations known as GMR(guided-mode resonance). In this paper, to clarify these effects, the field propagation and dispersion curve inside the grating region are analyzed by using a rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory(RETT) based on eigenvalue problem. The results show that, at the peak of a scattering resonance, the reflected mode is almost identical to a leaky wave that can be supported by the grating structure. Thus, it confirms to be occurred GMR effect associated with the free-resonant character of leaky waves at asymmetric multi-layered dielectric gratings. Quantitative simulation results illustrating the behavior of typical gratings are given, and the special case of normal incidence is discussed for TE and TM modes.

  • The evaluation of the compression behavior of the cushioning material is of importance to achieve appropriate packaging design. In order to change packaging design from polymeric-based to more eco-friendly cellulose-based nire effectively, comparative study on the compression behavior between these two packaging materials is crucial. In this study, the stress-strain behavior, hysteresis loss, and response characteristics for cyclic loading were analyzed through compression tests on multi-layered corrugated structure (MLCS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging materials. MLCS produced in Korea is produced by winding a certain number of single-faced corrugated paperboard, and the compression behavior of this material was turned out to be 6 stages: elastic stage, first buckling stage, sub-buckling stage, densification stage, last buckling stage and high densification stage. On the other hand, EPS's compression behavior was in 3 stages: linear elastic stage, collapse plateau, and densification stage. The strain energy per unit volume (strain energy density) of MLCS did not differ depending on the material thickness, but it showed a clear difference depending on the raw material and flute type. Hysteresis loss of MLCS ranged from 0.90 to 0.93, and there were no significant differences in the raw material and flute type. These values were about 5 to 20% greater than the hysteresis of the EPS (about 0.78 to 0.87).

  • Multi-layered material (sandwich panel) consists of double-sided steel plate which is incombustible material or similar material and core material which is not incombustible material. In case of sandwich panel which uses combustible material as insulation, flames spread inside the steel plate at the time of fire so that it is difficult to extinguish fire from the outside and flames spread rapidly and may cause the building to collapse. The current Building Act requires the sandwich panel to secure fire-retardant performance according to the purpose and size of building. In this study, the fire spreading prevention structure applied to partial exterior walls was applied to multi-layered material and its effect was measured through full scale fire test and the possibility to secure fire safety of buildings by applying the fire spreading prevention structure to multi-layered material in future was presented.
