Error Resilient MPEG-4 Encoding Method (오류 내성을 갖는 MPEG-4 부호화 기법)

  • The main ideas of hybrid video coding methods are to reduce the spatial and temporal redundancy for efficient data compression. If compressed video stream is transmitted through the error-prone channel, bitstream can be critically damaged and the spatio-temporal error propagates through successive frames at the decoder because of drift noise in the references between encoder and decoder. In this paper, I propose the lagrangian multiplier selection method in the error-prone environment. Finally, it is shown that the performance comparisons of the R-D optimized mode decision are made against the conventional method and simulation results are given in the following.

  • 블록기반의 비디오 부호화 표준은 비디오 신호의 압축방식으로 가장 널리 쓰이는 구조이지만 무선 환경과 같은 저 비트율 응용에서는 양자화에 의한 고주파 성분의 손실로 인해 블록킹 현상 및 링잉 현상이 두드러져 화질열화의 주된 원인이 된다. 이러한 화질열화를 제거하기 위해서 디블록킹 필터와 디링잉 필터를 사용하지만, 영상에 따라 블륵 경계의 모서리 부분과 대각선 에지가 만나는 부분에서 나타나는 corner outlier 현상으로 인해 화질이 충분히 개선되지 못하는 경우가 발생한다. 본 논문에서는 저 비트율 비디오에서 에지의 방향과 그 에지를 포함하는 블록의 평탄한 정도를 이용하여 corner outlier 현상을 검출하고, 이를 제거할 수 있는 비선형 필터를 제안한다. MPEG-4 호화 영상 및 MPEG-4 디블록킹 필터를 적용한 영상에 대해서 제안한 비선형 필터를 적용하여 주관적 화질이 개선됨을 실험을 통하여 보인다.

  • 본 논문에서는 MPEG4 표준에 의거한 멀티미디어 응용프로그램인 다자간 채팅 프로그램을 설계 구현하였다. 다자간 멀티미디어 채팅 프로그램의 영상모듈과 음성모듈은 데이터 성격상 큰 차이를 가지고 있어서 별개의 정보처리 및 전송 모델을 적용하여 설계, 구현하였다. 영상모듈은 분산처리 모델을 적용하여 실제 채팅 시에는 영상 정보를 멀티캐스트로 클라이언트간 직접 통신을 하도록 하였다. 멀티캐스트 방식은 송신자 측에서 여러 수신자 측에게 한 번에 메시지가 전송되도록 하여, 데이터의 중복전송으로 인한 네트워크 자원의 낭비를 최소화할 수 있게 된다. 반면 음성모듈은 Client-Server 모델을 적용하여 설계, 구현하였다. 음성처리 서버는 영상처리 서버와 달리 서버에서 각 클라이언트의 음성정보들을 합성하는 mixing작업을 수행하여 그 결과를 각 클라이언트로 전송하게 된다. 즉, 각 데이터 특성에 적합한 정보모델을 사용하여 다자간 채팅 프로그램을 설계, 구현하였다.

  • PACS and Medical Image System use only high level metadata in retrieving desired image nowadays. In order to retrieve Medical Image Data more efficiently, it would be needed to retrieve similarity by utilizing low level metadata as well as keyword retrieval by high level metadata. Thus, In this paper presents that it has realized similarity retrieval by low level metadata on the basis of MPEG-7, and keyword retrieval by high level metadata of DICOM base. It would be also available to look into medical image data in various methods and read accurate image promptly for diagnosis and treatment by retrieval with integrating two metadata.

  • A trend in 3D mesh compression is codec design with low computational complexity which preserves the input vertex and face order. However, this added information increases the complexity. We present a fast 3D mesh compression method that compresses the redundant shared vertex information between neighboring faces using simple first-order differential coding followed by fast entropy coding with a fixed length prefix. Our algorithm is feasible for low complexity designs and maintains the order, which is now part of the MPEG-4 scalable complexity 3D mesh compression standard. The proposed algorithm is 30 times faster than MPEG-4 3D mesh coding extension.

An Efficient Architecture of Transform & Quantization Module in MPEG-4 Video Codec

  • In this paper, a VLSI architecture for transform and quantization module, which consists of 2D-DCT, quantization, AC/DC prediction block, scan conversion, inverse quantization and 2D-IDCT, is presented. The architecture of the module is designed to handle a macroblock data within 1064 cycles and suitable for MPEG-4 video codec handling CIF image formats. Only single 1-D DCT/IDCT cores are used for the design instead of 2-D DCT/IDCT, respectively. 1-bit serial distributed arithmetic architecture is adopted for 1-D DCT/IDCT to reduce the hardware area in this architecture. As the result, the maximum utilization of hardware can be achieved, and power consumption can be minimized. The proposed design is operated on 27MHz clock. The experimental results show that the accuracy of DCT and IDCT meet the IEEE specification.

  • TFRC is an equation-based rate control scheme originally developed for video transmission over wired networks. When applied to the wireless networks, it suffers from performance degradation. In this thesis, we propose an end-to-end loss discrimination algorithm to improve the performance of TFRC over wireless networks. The proposed WLD-TFRC scheme combines Spike and WLD(Wireless Loss Discount) algorithms to discriminate wireless loss from congestion loss, and to discount feedback loss event rate. Experimental results show that WLD-TFRC outperforms the original TFRC and effectively reduce the degradation of the video quality caused by the wireless link status.

  • Telemedicine system means a remote support system among 4 remote telemedicine services of u-Health. A currently available service in Korea is the one checking and maintaining patient's status and supporting in emergency through video communication between an ambulance transferring patients and hospital under HSDPA and WiBro environment with coding of MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. With that, this paper improves the stability of the current telemedicine system service of ambulance confirms the improvement compared to the old system by generating a system communicating by RTP/RTCP under coding process through H.264/AVC after converting RGB video to YUV in order to improve network efficiency.

  • It this paper a VLSI architecture of the Shape-Adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform (SA-DCT) is described, which can be employed dedicatedly for MPEG-4 video codec. Adopting a fast DCT algorithm, the number of multipliers can be reduced by half in comparison with a conventional algorithm. This SA-DCT core with a small additional amount of hardware can perform the SA-Inverse DCT (SA-IDCT) by sharing multipliers and a transportation memory. The proposed SA-DCT core is integrated with 40,000 gates by using 0.35$mu$m triple-metal CMOS technology, which operates at 20 Mhz, and hence enables the realtime codec of CIF ($352{\times}288$ pixels) pictures.

  • This paper proposes a new IFFT(Inverse Fast Fourier Transform) algorithm, which is proper for IMDCT(Inverse Modified Discrete Cosine Transform) of MPEG-2 AAC(Advanced Audio Coding) decoder. The IFFT used in $2^N$-point IMDCT employ the bit-reverse data arrangement of inputs and N/4-IFFT to reduce the calculation cycles. We devised a new data arrangement algorithm of IFFT input and N/$4^{n+1}$-IFFT and can reduce multiplication cycles, addition cycles, and ROM size.
