Recent Developments at the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory, GMT's forerunner

  • After a short description of the telescope, we will report on the recent developments in three main areas: - Commissioning of the last of LBT's first generation instruments, now well underway, - Adaptive Optics (AO) and ground-layer AO progress and planned upgrades, - Interferometry first science results. We will also explore the future of the facility as it moves to full operation and strive to be the first of the ELTs in the decade-long window in which GMT, TMT, and E-ELT break ground and start taking shape.

  • Closed loop stability of Extended Dynamic Matrix Control (EDMC) is investigated for limited sampling time. Linear approximation of the sensitivity functions is employed in the derivation of the stability condition. It is shown that the closed loop system will be stable if the control moves suppression coefficient ${\lambda}$ is taken arbitrarily large. Special cases such as M=P=1 and M=1, P>1 are discussed in more details.

  • The visuo-motor map is based on the Kohonen's self-organizing map. The map is learned the relation of the end effecter coordinates and the joint angles. In this paper, a 3 d-o-fmanipulator which moves in the 2D space is targeted. A CCD camera is set beside the manipulator, and the end effecter coordinates are given from the image of a manipulator. As a result of learning, the end effecter can be moved to the destination without exact teaching.

  • A new approach to compute the control moves in Extended Dynamic Matrix Control (EDMC) is presented. In this approach, the number of variables, determined in the inner loop of the control algorithm using iterative methods, is reduced from P , the prediction horizon to M , the control horizon. Since M is usually much smaller than P , this modifies the control algorithm from computational point of view. To justify the modification, the computational requirements are compared to those of the existing EDMC algorithm.

  • A pebbling move on a connected graph G is taking two pebbles off of one vertex and placing one of them on an adjacent vertex. The domination cover pebbling number ${\psi}(G)$ is the minimum number of pebbles required so that any initial configuration of pebbles can be transformed by a sequence of pebbling moves so that the set of vertices that contain pebbles forms a domination set of G. We determine the domination cover pebbling number for fans, fuses, and pseudo-star.

Mobile Robot Path Finding Using Invariant Landmarks

  • This paper proposes a new path-finding scheme using viewpoint-invariant landmarks. The scheme introduces the concept of landmark detection in images captured with a vision sensor attached to a mobile robot, and provides landmark clues to determine a path. Experiment results show that the scheme efficiently detects landmarks with changes in scenes due to the robot's movement. The scheme accurately detects landmarks and reduces the overall landmark computation cost. The robot moves in the room to capture different images. It can efficiently detect landmarks in the room from different viewpoints of each scene. The outcome of the proposed scheme results in accurate and obstacle-free path estimation.

  • Superconducting magnetic bearing and rotating system were developed by utilizing the high magnetization YBaCuO superconductor. The pellets prepared by quasi-melt process had a high magnetic levitation force and a high magnetic attractive force. The shaft also could be moves its position and orientation of the rotating axis freely. Is is essential to enhance the materials properties and to improve the system design for the application of the system to industrial purpose.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for generating graphic objects having realistic shadows inserted into video sequence for the enhanced augmented reality. Our purpose is to extend the work of [1], which is applicable to the case of a static camera, to video sequence. However, in case of video, there are a few challenging problems, including the camera calibration problem over video sequence, false shadows occurring when the video camera moves and so on. We solve these problems using the convenient calibration technique of [2] and the information from video sequence . We present the experimental results on real video sequences.

  • The flow direction in a glass tube is measured by using a forward scatering dual beam laser Doppler velocimeter with an acousto-optic modulator. We can determine the flow direction by measuring the shifted Doppler frequency which is dependent on the order of modulation of the laser frequency shifting moves only the Doppler signal, enabling complete separation of the Pedestal and Doppler singal.

  • Let G be a connected graph. A pebbling move on a graph G is the movement of taking two pebbles off from a vertex and placing one of them onto an adjacent vertex. The pebbling number f(G) of a connected graph G is the least n such that any distribution of n pebbles on the vertices of G allows one pebble to be moved to any specified, but arbitrary vertex by a sequence of pebbling moves. In this paper, the pebbling numbers of the compositions of two graphs are computed.
