Textile and clothing in Ancient Egypt have carried long history and tradition. Especially, Egyptian textile culture, created mostly by the Copt, has the originality of weaving technology and the artistic beauty of the weaving motifs, making the textiles comparable to modern textiles. The purpose of this study is to research on the characteristics of Coptic textile designs of ancient Egypt and the tunic, a basic garment made of Coptic textiles, and offer materials for the development of the textiles and designs with artistic values which can be shared in the modern era, not just for the research of the relics of the past. Therefore, this study will follow the historical background of Coptic textiles and the process of the development, and look into the distinct features under the categories of material, colors and motifs. In addition, the tunic and its weaving technology will be explained and this will help understand the originality of Coptic textiles. The scope of this study is limited to the period of the 3rd to 12th centuries when the Egyptian weaving technologies advanced dramatically and many of the ancient Egyptian textiles discovered from the grave goods dates back, the research methode of the tunic as well as books published at home and abroad, research paper and photograph works. The textiles had developed along the Egyptian history which was influenced by different cultures such as Greek, Roman, pagan, Christian, and later, Islamic. For the textiles, they used a variety of pictorial motifs including Greek goddesses, pastoral scenes related to the Nile River and animals, human figures, geometrical figures and Christian icons. They are symbolic, natural, and mythological characters, and this explains that the world views and religions of the weavers influenced the development of specific motifs. Coptic textiles was used to make a tunic, a simple straight-sided gown without sleeves worn by men and women and was woven in a combination of linen plain weave and woolen tapestry weave for a tunic. Not only the excellence of the weaving technologies and the beauty of the colors used in the textiles, but also the diversity of the textures through weaving, embroidery, and knotting are detected in Coptic textiles.
The objective of this study was to trace and to examine costume terminologies recorded in Pak Tong Sa Eun Hae. Names of costumes and costume related terms were collected from P마 Tong Sa Eun Hae. Books and various references from China and Korea were used for this study. Costume terms were examined from the Chinese and Korean. Classifications of costume terminologies from the data were made for the analysis : man and woman's costume, accessories, names of fabrics, colors, and decorative motifs used, professional costume, special occasion dresses and so on. Conclusions and summary of results and findings can be summerized as follows : It revealed that manes of man's costume and other costume related words were a large in number compared with those of woman. Only one name of woman's costume appeared in the text : It was kind of long vests. However, names of accessories such as a hat, a hat decorated with jewels and phoenix design, a hair pin, earings, bracelets, finger rings, a soft belt were shown in the text. While many costume names of man included in the text were of garments such as a kind of long vest, a short vest, an outer robe, a kind of long coat with pleated skirt, leg coverings, outer jacket and so on. Also names of undergarments such as an under skirt, a belly covering, and drawers were found in the text. Fabric names were mostly silks such as brocade, twill, sarcenet, damasks and plain silks. Blue was the most widely appeared fabric color in the text and red was the second. Design motifs of fabric design were of dragon, flowers, eight precious things, clouds which were characteristic design motifs of the Chinese. It was found that some of the Chinese costume terminologies were translated into the Korean although many Chinese costume terms were used as the original Chinese.
The purpose of this study was to set up the objective standards of a space design for preschool children's room. In order to perform the above purpose, this study was organized into three sections. First, literature review to understand the relationship between preschool children's development and children's room, design elements and correlated variables of children's room. Second, survey research to seek a standard of children's room size, necessary furnitures, prefeerred colors and motifs. Third suggestions of objective and concrete alternative plan through the literature review and survey research. The major findings from the survey research were summarized as follows : 1) The mean size of contempory preschool children's room was 3.1 pyong and that of ldeal room was 4.7 pyong. 2) Necessary Furnitures with which more than two-thirds of parents want to furnish were bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, toy shelves, toy boxes, book cases, chalkboard. Necessary furnitures for different ages were found to vary. For the age 2-5, the funitures for play were major, where as for the age 5-6, the furnitures for study were major. 3) The colors of contemporary preschool children's room were red, yellow, pink, blue, those of parent's favorites were Light colors(pink, skyblue, lemon yellow, Light green, Light purple). The rooms for boy were found with more cold colors, those for girl with more warm colors. 4) The motifs of contemporary preschool children's room were plants, lines, figures from cartoons of fairy tales. Boy's parents prefreerd space science and vehicles, while girl's parents preferred sky scenery and plants for their children's room.
This study was carried out to find out some similarities and differences of the ornamental technique and motifs in folk furniture between Denmark and Korea which had quite different background of development of folk furniture as one of a cross-cultural study. Furniture made and used in the 18th and 19th century was investigated in order to eliminate the influence of internationalism in the design area in the 20th century. This study was fulfilled by many study trips all over the districts in Denmark to identify Danish folk furniture as well as literature study. Study trips to folk museums. Insa-dong, Janghanpyung furniture market were done for Korean folk furniture. Characteristics of ornament in Danish folk furniture were as followings; Main materials of the Danish folk furniture were conifers, especially pine tree, as pine was very common and easy to get from their surroundings. The most popular and unique types of decoration in Danish folk furniture was painting. Colors used in painted furniture were very bright and vivid. This might be a reaction to the long and dark winter of Scandinavian countries. Motifs used in Danish folk furniture had been chosen to reflect their surroundings. Flowers, six-angular stars, animals, human figures and Biblical motifs were popular sources of decoration for Danish folk furniture. Characteristics of Korean folk furniture were as followings; Main materials of Korean folk furniture were broad-leaved trees as well as conifers, because of their beautiful wood grain. The Korean ways of decoration were different from Danish ones. The method of painting with bright from Danish ones. The method of painting with bright colors was hardly ever used in Korea, except only in lacquering. The most popular decoration method for Korean folk furniture was revealing the natural wood grain with transparent vegetable oil finish, instead of painting. Metal ornament was unique to Korean folk furniture. therefore a lot of metal ornaments were attached on the furniture. Motifs used in Korean folk furniture were more like symbolic than Danish ones. Korean people tried to express their longings and norms through the motifs, such as longevity, prosperity, good luck, and many sons, etc. Therefore, it was natural for Korean motifs to have special symbolic meanings.
The importance of souvenirs are increasing immensely these days owing to the increase of foreign visitors to our country, which forces us to turn our eyes to this field. Upon these reflections, this study aims at aims at developing cap designs that satisfy the foreign tourists needs and let them recognize the outstanding beauty of Korean traditional patterns by applying traditional motifs. The Korean traditional patterns and their symbolic meanings were researched as well as the previous studies on the designing of goods for foreign visitors which had traditional patterns applied. Furthermore, the overall tendencies of the purchase of souvenirs and goods by foreign tourists in Korea as well as in foreign countries were investigated. Next, the present state of apparel goods and caps for sightseers in Korea was analyzed according to their shapes, colors, and patterns. Finally, by using CAD system, new cap designs were developed applying traditional bat motifs in order to capture the traditional images for a modern sense of beauty.
The purpose of this study is to comparatively examine techniques and expressive characteristics of batik by focusing on the work of DanZhai and that of ZhenNing Buyi. We collected 50 pieces of batik each from Miao and Buyi in Chinese GuiZhouSheng and then analyzed their colors and patterns. The findings show that most of Miao's batik had deep and soft tones, while that of Buyi most often had blackish tone since the number of dyes in the latter is higher than that in the former. Miao often used patterns expressing animals or animals and plants, while Buyi frequently used geometric ones. An examination of specific motifs demonstrated that butterflies, fish, and flowers were most often used by Miao, while dots, vortexes, lines, and lozenges were frequently utilized by Buyi. For expressive techniques, both Miao and Buyi commonly used simple stylized expression or complex expression combining stylized and geometric techniques. Maio's motifs were often decoratively expressed with delicate curves, while Buyi's motifs had simple structures, so pictures were neatly expressed with thick lines and wide and simple planes. For the composition of the motifs, incomplete symmetry between top and bottom and between left and right often appeared in Maio, while in Buyi complete symmetry was frequently shown.
This study attempts to adapt and develop Korean prehistoric petroglyphs into textile design for children. For this purpose, literature review was conducted to understand the plasticity and symbolism expressed in Korean prehistoric petroglyphs. Also this study conducted textile design development as follows: First, the figures and faces in petroglyphs were selected because children can easily recognize them. Second, two groups of different ages (7-9 and 10-13) were allowed to freely draw the selected motifs. Third, some of the motifs created by the children were selected that show children's individuality and also keep the features of the original motifs. The children's motifs were developed into textile design using Texpro and Photoshop. Then digital textile printing and 3D mapping program were used to make pajamas (5 types), umbrellas (3 types), and simulate bedding sets (2 types) for children. This research's results are as follows: First, petroglyphs are symbolic language of human's oldest art form, and related to religious and mythical belief. Korean petroglyphs have plasticity showing the development steps in technique and expression, with various shapes such as animals, human figures, faces, masks and abstract figures. Third, children showed their interests in various human figures and faces of the petroglyphs, and it was easy to draw those motifs in their own way. Fourth, 10 design motifs were selected from the children's work and used to create textiles considering materials and colors for children. Total 10 items were made and presented. This study confirmed the usefulness of applying prehistoric petroglyphs to children's textiles designs. These designs may grow as a kind of cultural product for children who know about and like petroglyphs. They can be a niche market items too, made to order for children with individuality and who favor originality.
The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics by design component elements of the facade in elementary school buildings after the 7th educational curriculum. This study choose twenty five elementary school as the subjects of the study. And among many elevations of building, an elevation that is alongside of the schoolyard is chosen because this elevation has the highest visual influence on passers-by. To begin with, this elevation is divided into the roof and the surface of a wall, The roof is divided into roof styles, existence of roof and materials. The surface of a wall is divided into design principles(balance, contrast, rhythm), the formal organization(basic elements and form, and transformation of form), the ornamental composition, materials and colors. The results of the research are summarized as follows: First of all, motifs of classical architecture were well expressed in this period and postmodern tendency had been shown until 2005. After Build Transfer Lease(BTL), however, tendency of classical architecture, contrast by the size of the form and base element by point disappeared. Instead, asymmetrical and flat tendency is expressed. Also, emphasized design of the building elevation appear by basic colors of Munsell, not motifs of classical architecture.
This study reviews the principles for the techniques of Impressionist paintings as well as analyzed contemporary fashion designs with a focus on a motif-building technique based on the laws of a screen equivalent as a visual formative approach. We provide design principles based on fashion design painting techniques. Previous research on the laws of the screen equivalent of Impressionist paintings were studied and a qualitative analysis was conducted on fashion design cases from 2011, 2012 S/S and F/W collections. The analysis resulted in the following outcomes. First, the development of new motifs were found directly correlated to the creativity of design if it was a motif-building design. Second, in the selected fashion design cases, cutting lines and details were covered by motifs and their shapes collapsed in regards to overall visual uniformity so that specific details were hard to identify. Third, clothing shapes are recognized the changing colors of motifs and not through construction pattern lines; therefore, the expressions of diverse visual forms were available without being disturbed by construction pattern lines. This is deemed equivalent to an Impressionist painting style that depicts shapes with colors instead of lines. Lastly, the cases covered in this study have created new visual aspects that replace the stereoscopic spatial depth of clothes with a 'sensuous surface'. The pleasures derived from the sensuous surface are deemed equivalent to the visual pleasures created by Impressionist paintings.
The purpose of this study is to develop fashion cultural products that contain an example of cultural symbolism, which is based on the results of iconological analysis seen on imaginary animals. The method of research was to derive design ideas through a verbal association method, using the technique of mind map as based on the iconological analysis results. In the scarf design, four auspicious animals were used as the main motifs, and the background elements that appeared with each folk painting were used as sub-motifs for each of the four animals. In this case, the Yong was expressed with an image of clouds and flames as sub-motifs, and was strongly represented by the presence of a contrast color combination. In what follows, the Bonghwang was used with the sun and feathers in a stable structure due to its four-way arrangement, and was expressed with its soft light tone. The Shingoo was used with blue and khaki colors of dull and deep tone, and the image of aquatic plants and lotus were used. Finally, with the Kirin was represented by a symmetrical structure as characterized with a dull toned color and square border that provides a sense of stability. The clutch bags were as generally expressed using simple animal motifs, and were composed of a uniform motif and color. The design process used the Illustrator CS6 to perform motifs design. In the end, the process finally developed the actual product of eight scarves and four clutch handbags.
