  • The isotropic single-hardening constitutive model has been applied to predict the behavior of soils during reorientation of principal stresses in the field. The predicted response by the model agrees well with the measured behavior for a series of torsion shear tests performed on hollow cylinder specimens of Ko consoildated clay along various stress -paths. This indicates that the soil behavior during reorientation of principal stresses can be predicted by using the model with application of simple informations given by isotropic compression tests and conventional consolidated-undxained triaxial compression tests. Isotropic elasto-plastic soil behavior has been served during primary loading from both the torsion shear tests and the predictions by the model. However, the directions of maj or principal strain increment given by the model have not coincided with the directions for tests during stress reversal, such as unloading and reloading, within isotropic yield surface for Ko consolidated stress. This indicates that kinematic hardening model instead of isotropic hardening model should be developed to predict the soil behavior during stress reversal. The experimental strain increment vectors in the work-space have been compared with the directions expected for associated and nonassociated flow rules.

  • This study presents a methodology to reproduce the mechanical behavior of isotropic or transversely isotropic rock using the polygonal grain-based distinct element model. A numerical technique to monitor the evolution of micro-cracks during the simulation was developed in the present study, which enabled us to examine the contribution of tensile cracking and shear cracking to the progressive process of the failure. The numerical results demonstrated good agreement with general observations from rock specimens in terms of the behavior and the evolution of micro-cracks, suggesting the capability of the model to represent the mechanical behavior of rock. We also carried out a parametric study as a fundamental work to examine the relationships between the microscopic properties of the constituents and the macroscopic behavior of the model. Depending on the micro-properties, the model exhibited a variety of responses to the external load in terms of the strength and deformation characteristics. In addition, a numerical technique to reproduce the transversely isotropic rock was suggested and applied to Asan gneiss from Korea. The behavior of the numerical model was in good agreement with the results obtained in the laboratory-scale experiments of the rock.

  • The in-situ consolidation behavior of drainage system-installed deposits has three dimensional characteristics. Therefore, for an approximate 2-D plane strain consolidation analysis, it is necessary to convert the 3-D spatial flow of actual cases into the laminar flow simulated by the 2-D plane strain model. . In this paper, in order to properly model the effect of three dimensional characteristics, an equivalent and efficient model has been applied in a finite element technique for the analysis of the drainage system-installed soil deposits. The equivalent two dimensional model involves equivalent permeabilities and drainage widths. To validate the equivalent two dimensional model, three dimensional analyses were per formed by using the ABAQUS program and the results of 3-D analyses were compared with those of the 2-D analyses. By using the proposed equivalent model, one may be able to appropriately predict the consolidation behavior of drainage system-installed soft deposits.

  • Leachate flow behavior due to intermediate cover soil of low hydraulic conductivity and the applicability of pumping method for reducing the leachate level in the landfill are analyzed with the numerical flow model, MODFLOW. Using the hydraulic conductivity and storativity data obtained from the field pumping and slug tests(Jang and Cho, 1999), the hydraulic condition within the landfill is validated. The optimum rate of pumping, the radius of influence, and the efficiency of horizontal drain are analyzed for reducing the leachate level in the landfill. From the results of the analyses, the barrier effect that the buried cover soil of low hydraulic conductivity prevents the vertical movement of leachate flow through the cover soil, which is found from the in-situ geotechnical studies(Jang and Cho, 1999), is identified again. Also, the installation of horizontal drains to the pumping well can increase the pumping rate from 120 ton/day per a well to 300 ton/day. The length of horizontal drain did not influence significantly on the drawdown-time curve of leachate in the landfill.

  • In recent years there have been studies on tour based approaches for freight travel demand modelling. The purpose of this paper is to analyze tour type choice behavior of commercial vehicles which are divided into round trips and chained tours. The methods of the study are based on the decision tree and the logit model. The results indicates that the explanation variables for classifying tour types of commercial vehicles are loading factor, average goods quantity, and total goods quantity. The results of the decision tree method are similar to those of logit model. In addition, the explanation variables for tour type classification of small trucks are not different from those for medium trucks', implying that the most important factor on the vehicle tour planning is how to load goods such as shipment size and total quantity.

  • This paper is results of experimental and nunerical works on the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel. Centrifuge model tests were performed to simulate the behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnels having cross sections of national road and subway tunnels. Model experiments were carried out with changing the cut slope and the slope of filling ground surface. Displacements of tunnel lining resulted from artificially accelerated gravitational force up to 40g of covered material used in model tests, were measured during centrifuge model tests. In model tests, Jumunjin Standard Sand with the relative density of 80 % and the zinc plates were used for the covered material and the flexible tunnel lining, respectively. Basic soil property tests were performed to obtain it's the property of Jumumjin Standard Sand. Shear strength parameters of Jumunjin Standard Sand were obtained by performing the triaxial compression tests. Direct shear tests were also carried out to find the mechanical properties of the interface between the lining and the covered material. Numerical analysis with the commercially available program of FLAC were performed to compare with results of centrifuge model experiment In numerical modelling. Mohr-Coulomb elasto-plastic constitutive model was used to simulaye the behavoor of Jumunjin Standard Sand and the interface element between the lining and the covered material was implemented to simulate the interaction between them. Compared results between model tests and numerical estimation with respect to displacement of the lining showed in good agreements.

  • One of the major threats to the stability of classical columns and colonnades are earthquakes. The behavior of columns under high seismic excitation loads is non-linear and complex since rocking, wobbling and sliding failure modes can occur. Therefore, three dimensional simulation approaches are essential to investigate the in-plane and out-of-plane response of such structures during harmonic and seismic loading excitations. Using a software based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM) of analysis, a three dimensional numerical study has been performed to investigate the parameters affecting the seismic behaviour of colonnades' structural systems. A typical section of the two-storey colonnade of the Forum in Pompeii has been modelled and studied parametrically, in order to identify the main factors affecting the stability and to improve our understanding of the earthquake behaviour of such structures. The model is then used to compare the results between 2D and 3D simulations emphasizing the different response for the selected earthquake records. From the results analysis, it was found that the high-frequency motion requires large base acceleration amplitude to lead to the collapse of the colonnade in a shear-slip mode between the drums. However, low-frequency harmonic excitations are more prominent to cause structural collapse of the two-storey colonnade than the high-frequency ones with predominant rocking failure mode. Finally, the 2D analysis found to be unconservative since underestimates the displacement demands of the colonnade system when compared with the 3D analysis.

  • This research conducted a survey of the workers in medical institutions and carried out empirical analysis through covariance structure equation modelling in order to examine the relationship among emotional labor, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and counterproductive work behaviors of medical institution workers. The results of the empirical analysis are as follows; First, the frequency of emotional expression, one of the dimensions of emotional labor, did not have a positive influence on job satisfaction, but both the degree of emotional expression attentiveness and emotional dissonance had a negatively significant effect on job satisfaction. Second, job satisfaction had a positively significant effect on organizational commitment. Third, organizational commitment had a negatively significant effect on counterproductive work behaviors toward both individuals and organizations. This research result shows that it is necessary to pay attention to drawing a plan to reduce emotional labor that workers in medical institutions experience since emotional labor causes them to get negative results while they are performing their duties.

  • The main objective of this paper is to examine the applicability of Linan and Chen's entrepreneurial intention model (EIM) in predicting the entrepreneurial intention. EIM is an adaptation of the Theory of Planned Behavior that focuses on entrepreneurial intention and hypothesizing slightly different patterns of relationship with regards to subjective norms. The model also includes human capital and demographic factors. Snowball sampling method was used to collect data using the entrepreneurial intention questionnaire (EIQ) through several social media platforms. The survey indicates that the overall entrepreneurial intention of Saudi students is high (mean = 5.41). Eight out of the seventeen hypothesized relationships were found to be significant. Among the demographic variables, gender-personal attitude was significant whereas self employment experience and years of business education were found to be significantly related with perceived behavioral control. The statistical analysis using partial least square structural equation modelling validated the model. All the three antecedents of entrepreneurial intention were significantly related with entrepreneurial intention. The results of this study will help policy makers to get deep understanding into the phenomenon of entrepreneurship among Saudi university students and thereby develop a conducive environment. This study also validates the entrepreneurial intention model in a different cultural context.
