A Genetic Algorithm for Improving the Workload Smoothness in Mixed Model Assembly Lines (혼합모델 조립라인에서 작업부하의 평활화를 위한 유전알고리듬)

  • When balancing mixed model assembly lines (MMALs), workload smoothness should be considered on the model-by-model basis as well as on the station-by-station basis. This is because although station-by-station assignments may provide the equality of workload to workers, it causes the utilization of assembly lines to be inefficient due to the model sequences. This paper presents a genetic algorithm to improve the workload smoothness on both the station-by-station and the model-by-model basis in balancing MMALs. Proposed is a function by which the two kinds of workloads smoothness can be evaluated according to the various preferences of line managers. To enhance the capability of searching good solutions, our genetic algorithm puts emphasis on the utilization of problem-specific information and heuristics in the design of representation scheme and genetic operators. Experimental results show that our algorithm can provide better solutions than existing heuristics. In particular, our algorithm is outstanding on the problems with a larger number of stations or a larger number of tasks.

  • DBMS is used for a range of applications from data warehousing through on-line transaction processing. As a result of this demand, DBMS has continued to grow in terms of its size. This growth invokes the most important issue of manually tuning the performance of DBMS. The DBMS tuning should be adaptive to the type of the workload put upon it. But, identifying workloads in mixed database applications might be quite difficult. Therefore, a method is necessary for identifying workloads in the mixed database environment. In this paper, we propose a SVM workload classifier to automatically identify a DBMS workload. Database workloads are collected in TPC-C and TPC-W benchmark while changing the resource parameters. Parameters for SVM workload classifier, C and kernel parameter, were chosen experimentally. The experiments revealed that the accuracy of the proposed SVM workload classifier is about 9% higher than that of Decision tree, Naive Bayes, Multilayer perceptron and K-NN classifier.

Workload and Productivity during Work from Home (WFH) for the Construction Workforce

  • A large number of employees shifted to Work from home (WFH) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the construction workforce. The changes in workload and productivity due to WFH impact the work performance and economic outputs of companies. However, there are mixed results about the impacts of WFH on workload and productivity. In particular, limited studies focused on specific types of work of different occupations in the construction workforce. This study aims to explore the impacts of WFH on workload and productivity considering different types of work for the construction workforce in the U.S. After identifying three main occupations and five types of work, an online survey (N = 69) was distributed. Descriptive analysis showed that participants had less workload (0.82 hours/week) and lower productivity (9.69%) during WFH. Three occupations had varied changes due to the different types of work. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) indicated that there was no significant difference in workload, while productivity was decreased during WFH. In particular, the productivity of project-related work and communication and documentation decreased significantly. Overall, participants finished 2.85% less workload per week during WFH. The findings provide an insight into WFH in the construction workforce, which improves future remote or hybrid work arrangements in the construction industry.

  • The assembly line balancing problem has been focused by many research works because the efficient management of the assembly line might influence not only the quality of the products but also the working conditions for the workers. This paper deals with U-shape mixed-model assembly line balancing and considers both the processing time and the physical workloads. We suggest the goal programming approach for this situation and to overcome some difficulties of finding optimal solution, we adopt the genetic algorithm that is one of the most promising solution techniques. We tested several test problems and present the results that indicate some improvement for the line balancing as well as the stable performance of the algorithm.

  • In this paper, we studied a discrete-time queuing system that operates under a mixed situation of D-policy and T-policy, one of the representative server control policies in queuing theory. A single server serves customers arriving by Bernoulli arrival process on a first-in, first-out basis(FIFO). If there are no customers to serve in the system, the server goes on vacation and returns, until the total service time (i.e., total amount of workload) of waiting customers exceeds predetermined workload threshold D. The operation of the system covered in this study can be used to model the efficient resource utilization of mobile devices using secondary batteries. In addition, it is significant in that the steady state waiting time and system sojourn time of the queuing system under a flexible mixed control policy were derived within a unified framework.

  • This research deals with a task assignment problem to worker group which consists of one master and one assistant. Each task must be assigned to only one worker group and it is possible to make a pair of each master and each assistant to organize a worker group. A worker group may have more than one task assigned to it, but the workloads of each worker group must be balanced within the allowable range. This problem can be formulated mathematically using the Mixed Integer Programming(MIP), where the objective function is to minimize the total assignment cost. A two phase heuristic algorithm is suggested in order to find approximate solutions. The first phase is to obtain an initial solution, where the initial assignment is performed to follow the workload adjustment. In the second phase, the solution is improved through the repeated process of the exchange and the assignment adjustment. Numerical experiments have been performed to evaluate the performance of the heuristic algorithm.

Analysis of the Adequacy of Nurse Staffing Level through the Estimation of Nursing Activity Hours and Implementation of Focus Group Interviews in a Tertiary Hospital: Using a Mixed-Method Design (일 상급종합병원 병동간호사의 업무량 측정 및 간호사 배치수준의 적절성 연구: 혼합연구 설계 적용)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to examine the adequacy of current nurse staffing levels by identifying nursing activities and workload. Methods: The study used a mixed-method design. A nursing activity survey was conducted using the work sampling method over 2 working days with 119 general ward nurses. A focus group interview was conducted with 12 nurses. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 and content analysis, respectively. Results: The most amount of time was spent on medication (in direct nursing) and electronic medical record documentation (in indirect nursing). The appropriate nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:7.7 for the day shift, 1:9.0 for the evening shift, and 1:11.9 for the night shift. However, the current nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:9.4, 1:11.0, and 1:13.8 for the day, evening, and night shifts, respectively. Therefore, the current nurse staffing level is insufficient for the workload. In the focus group interview, the main reasons cited for being unable to complete tasks within working hours were communication and coordination, and the nursing electronic medical record. The essential nursing activities of basic nursing and emotional support were overlooked owing to a heavy workload. Therefore, an adequate nurse staffing level should be higher than the measured quantitative workload. Conclusion: These results suggest the general wards of tertiary hospitals should evaluate the adequacy of their current nurse staffing and allocate sufficient nurses to improve patient safety and nursing care quality.

A Design of Column-Group based Dynamic Page Storage Model for Mixed Workloads (혼합 워크로드 처리를 위한 컬럼 그룹 기반 동적 페이지 저장 관리 설계)

  • There exists a limit in efficient processing of mixed workloads that database markets requires in recent years since existing database systems utilize a static page storage model. In this paper we propose a dynamic page storage model that can reflect the characteristics of mixed workloads. We also describe how to extract optimized column groups from given mixed workloads and how to construct pages dynamically. Finally, we show in our experiments that the proposed model is more efficient than the existing model in processing given mixed workloads.

  • A flexible assembly line (FAL) is a production system that assembles various parts in unidirectional flow line with many constraints and manufacturing flexibilities. In this research we deal with a FAL balancing problem with the objective of minimizing the maximum workload allocated to the stations. However, almost all the existing researches do not appropriately consider various constraints due to the problem complexity. Therefore, this study addresses a balancing problem of FAL with many constraints and manufacturing flexibilities, unlike the previous researches. We use a genetic algorithm (GA) to solve this problem. To apply GA to FAL. we suggest a genetic representation suitable for FAL balancing and devise evaluation method for individual's fitness and genetic operators specific to the problem, including efficient repair method for preserving solution feasibility. After we obtain a solution using the proposed GA. we use a heuristic method for reassigning some tasks of each product to one or more stations. This method can improve workload smoothness and raise work efficiency of each station. The proposed algorithm is compared and analyzed in terms of solution quality through computational experiments.

  • The variable sampling inspection scheme with screening for the purpose of assuring the upper limit of maximum expected surplus loss after inspection has been proposed. In this inspection scheme, it has been assumed that a product lot consists of products manufactured through a single production line and lot quality characteristics follow a normal distribution. In the previous literature with respect to inspection schemes, it has been commonly assumed that lot quality characteristics obey a single normal distribution under the condition that all products are manufactured in the same condition. On the other hand, the production line is designed in order that the workload of respective processes becomes uniform from the viewpoint of line balancing. One of the solutions for the bottleneck process is to arrange the workshops in parallel. The lot quality characteristics from such a production line with the process consisting of some parallel workshops might not follow strictly the single normal distribution. Therefore, we expand an applicable scope of the above mentioned variable sampling inspection scheme with screening in this article. Concretely, we consider the variable sampling inspection with screening for the purpose of assuring the upper limit of average outgoing surplus quality loss in the production lots when the lot quality follows the mixed normal distribution.
