  • Considering the optical performance of the reflector and analyzing heat losses from the receiver, the optimal diameter of the absorber for a PTC(Parabolic Trough Concentrator) system was numerically determined. The results of this study were compared with the results of the IST (Industrial Solar Technology)-PTC test to verify the validity of the model. Good agreement was obtained with the deviation range from 0.4 to 7.7%. Generally, the net energy gained by the receiver shows the maximum at the particular absorber diameter and the specific gap size between the absorber and the glass envelop because the heat losses from the receiver becomes the minimum. The results showed that the conductive and convective heat losses became the minimum when the gap size was 7 to 10mm. Finally, it was known that the optimal absorber diameter was 62mm at $100^{\circ}C$, 57mm at $150^{\circ}C$, and 53mm at $200^{\circ}C$ of the absorber surface temperature, respectively.

  • Dust explosions are occurring in a variety of industries. A dust explosion caused by a specific energy generates huge amount of energy in the ignition and releases decomposition gas. Damages can be increased since this released decomposition gas can cause second and subsequent explosions. In this study, the goal was to obtain practical information on what could affect the explosion by comparing the characteristics of two kinds of dusts with completely different chemical properties. Three kinds of dusts were measured and evaluated for explosion pressure, dust explosion index, explosion limit and minimum ignition energy. It is possible to grasp the characteristics of each dust and use it as useful accident prevention data in the production of raw material powder.

  • To establish testing method for ignition energy of explosive powders caused by electrostatic discharge, one testing method using a very small quantity of tested powders ( Frima ) was proposed, and the influence of discharge - limiting resistance connected in series into a capacitive discharge circuit on ignition energies of explosive powders was investigated using, as tested powders. As a result the minimum ignition energy was 9 mJ when discharge-limiting resistance was 300 k$\Omega$. The reason for the dependence of ignition energy on discharge-limiting resistance was thought to the difference in the type of electrostatic discharge, such as arc or glow discharge, from the observation of discharging wave forms.

  • The new energy-based criterion, named Reinforcement Strain Energy Density (ReiSED), is proposed to investigate the fracture behavior of the cracked orthotropic materials in which the crack is embedded in the matrix along the fibers. ReiSED is an extension of the well-known minimum strain energy density criterion. The concept of the reinforced isotropic solid as an advantageous model is the basis of the proposed mixed-mode I/II criterion. This model introduces fibers as reinforcements of the isotropic matrix in orthotropic materials. The effects of fibers are qualified by defining reinforcement coefficients at tension and shear modes. These coefficients, called Reduced Stress (ReSt), provide the possibility of encompassing the fiber fraction in a fracture criterion for the first time. Comparing ReiSED fracture limit curve with experimental data proves the high efficiency of this criterion to predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials.

  • In this paper we describe a multi-module, multi-port memory design procedure that satisfies area and/or energy constraints. Our procedure uses ILP models to determine (a) the memory configuration with minimum area, given the energy bound, (b) the memory configuration with minimum energy, given the area bound. If we have a margin in time constraint, we break up conflict edges and expend the search space of ILP. This method effectively reduces area and power of the designed results.

  • Computer simulation of buildings and solar energy systems is being used increasingly in energy assessments and design.. Building designers often now predict the performance of buildings simulation programmes that require hourly weather data. However, not all weather stations provide hourly data. Climate prediction models such as HadCM3 also provide the daily average dry bulb temperature as well as the maximum and minimum. Hourly temperature values are available for building thermal simulations that accounts for future changes to climate. In order to make full use of these predicted future weather data in building simulation programmes, algorithms for downscaling daily values to hourly values are required. This paper describes a more accurate method for generating hourly temperature values in the South Korea that uses all three temperature parameters from climate model. All methods were evaluated for accuracy and stability in terms of coefficient of determination and cumulative error. They were compared with hourly data collected in Seoul and Ulsan, South Korea.

  • The flame initiation of an infinite fuel system exposed to a planar ignition kernel has been investigated numerically. The aim has been to promote an understanding of the flame initiation by using the simplest mathematical formulation which retains the essential physical features. It has been found that there exists a minimum ignition energy below which a combustion wave cannot be initiated. For a fixed value of Lewis number, the same flame progation velocity has been obtained irregardless of the amount ignition energy supplied. Furthermore, for a fixed energy input there is a maximum Lewis number over which the flame cannot be initiated.

  • When flammable gases are mixed with air or oxygen in the explosion concentration range and are ignited by sufficiently large electrostatic discharge energy, they may explode causing severe disaster in workplaces. The minimum ignition energy (MIE) of single gas-air mixtures has been already investigated by many researchers, but the MIE of mixtures of more than three substances is not examined yet. The purpose of this study is to investigate the MIE of several three-component gas mixtures experimentally. The result of our experiment shows that the MIE of some gas mixtures is quite different from that we expected based on the characteristics of individual gas-air mixture.

  • The recent interest in sensor networks has led to a number of routing schemes that use the limited resources available at sensor nodes more efficiently. These schemes typically try to find the minimum energy path to optimize energy usage at a node. Some schemes, however, are prone to unbalance of the traffic and energy. To solve this problem, we propose a novel solution: a gradient-field approach which takes account of the minimum cost data delivery, energy consumption balancing, and traffic equalization. We also modify the backoff-based cost field setup algorithm to establish our gradient-field based sensor network and give the algorithm. Simulation results show that the overhead of routing establishment obtained by our algorithm is much less than the one obtained by Flooding. What's more, our approach guarantees the basic Quality of Service (QoS) without extra spending.

  • Strain rate dependence of the flow stress of cold-worked and annealed Zircaloy-4 was studied by stress relaxation test in temperature range of 20$0^{\circ}C$ to 45$0^{\circ}C$. The In $\sigma$-ln i curves for various temperatures were straight in the eirange of 10$^{-5}$ to 10$^{-3}$ sec$^{-1}$ . From the slope of a curve strain rate sensitivity m was obtained. The m in cold-worked Zircaloy-4 had a minimum value at 30$0^{\circ}C$, while m in annealed Zircaloy-4 had two minimum values, one at 30$0^{\circ}C$ and the other at 45$0^{\circ}C$. It was found that the temperatures of the minimum m are consistent with the temperatures of strain ageing peaks. The minimum m at 30$0^{\circ}C$ is considered to be due to strain ageing owing to the pinning of glide dislocations by oxygen atoms, while the minimum m at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for annealed specimen is attributed to iron atoms.
