  • This study is basic research about actualizing mathematical teaching and learning based on storytelling that is raised for reforming school mathematics education. We have developed mathematics textbook model for 2nd grade in middle school based on storytelling. It was applied in the middle school classroom and the results were analyzed. In order to develop the mathematics textbook model, the procedures and methods of development were extracted from the literature. And mathematics textbook model was developed in accordance with the process and methods. To apply it in school 20 hours of instruction were carried out. For the analysis of the results, we conducted a questionnaire survey, the teachers' interview, the affective test and math anxiety test. Through the results of this study, we will be able to check the possibility of storytelling in mathematics class. And it will be also the foundation of mathematics teaching and learning based on storytelling in middle school.

  • In this study we developed a textbook for middle school mathematics, especially focusing on the 1st grade, based on storytelling, did experimental lessons using the developed textbook, and surveyed the responses of students to the lesson by three kinds of questionnaire and teacher interview. The results of this study can serve as basic data for other researches about storytelling-related education in school mathematics.

  • The concepts of ratio, rate, and proportion are used in everyday life and are also applied to many disciplines such as mathematics and science. Proportional reasoning is known as one of the pivotal ideas in school mathematics because it links elementary ideas to deeper concepts of mathematics and science. However, previous research has shown that it is difficult for students to recognize the proportionality in contextualized situations. The purpose of this study is to understand how the mathematical concept in the middle school mathematics curriculum is connected with ratio, rate, and proportion and to investigate the characteristics of proportional reasoning through analyzing the concept including ratio, rate, and proportion on the middle school mathematics curriculum. This study also examines mathematical concepts (direct proportion, slope, and similarity) presented in a middle school textbook by exploring diverse interpretations among ratio, rate, and proportion and by comparing findings from literature on proportional reasoning. Our textbook analysis indicated that mechanical formal were emphasized in problems connected with ratio, rate, and proportion. Also, there were limited contextualizations of problems and tasks in the textbook so that it might not be enough to develop students' proportional reasoning.

  • The importance of statistics in everyday life and work place has led to calls for an increased attention to statistical literacy in the mathematics curriculum both internationally and domestically. While professional organizations and researchers propose perspectives towards and models of statistical literacy, conceptions and elements of statistical literacy vary. This study examines how mathematics textbook questions fulfill the requirements of statistical literacy by employing two models: Watson's model focusing on understanding of statistical language and Curcio's model on data interpretation aspects of statistical literacy. For this, a total of 872 problem questions presented in the statistics units of from ten textbooks for the middle school year 1 mathematics were analyzed.

  • In this study, the situation of publishing middle and high school mathematics textbooks used at the period of the first curriculum were investigated. In the period of the first curriculum, middle and high school textbooks were used from 1956, and middle school textbooks were used until 1965, and high school textbooks were used until 1967. First of all, the announcements of the ministry of education related to the textbook authorization were examined in the government official gazettes of 1956~1967. However, there were considerable typographical errors in these announcements of the ministry of education. So textbooks used at that period were examined, and typographical errors were corrected by cross-checking the bibliographic information.

  • The Yang-Hui arithmetic(楊輝算法) is a crucial textbook on mathematics for make out the Orient mathematics. In this thesis, compare the Yang-Hui arithmetic and the part of the equation and the function both in the middle school mathematics of the 7th Educational Curriculum Revision. As well, drawing a parallel between two things is the solution that had given in the Yang-Hui arithmetic and have given in the middle school textbook of the 7th Educational Curriculum Revision.

  • There have been several studies regarding strict and formal proof in the field of geometry in middle school curriculum, and the level of proof has been gradually lowered along with the changes in the curriculum. In the 2011 Revised Middle School Math Curriculum, there have been efforts to eliminate the term 'proof' and instead to replace it with the new one, 'justification'. Therefore, this study intends to present specific and practical examples of justification by analyzing the current math textbook especially in the field of geometry. As a result, it identified that strict and practical proof has been sharply increased in the second year of middle school. It also witnessed the possibility of justification from the various examples presented in the first, second, and the third year of the middle school math textbook.

  • This paper is a follow up study of [2]. In this paper we analyse the contents of middle school mathematics textbooks published in the 1st National Curriculum Period centered on the concept 'straight line' and discuss how they are different from contemporary mathematics textbooks in view of connectedness of contents, mathematical terms, textbook as a learning material vs. teaching material, relationship between contents of national curriculum and textbooks, and some topics related to direct proportion, function, method of equivalence as a method for solving simultaneous linear equations and so on. The results of our analysis and discussion suggest implications for reforming mathematics curriculum and developing mathematics textbooks.
