  • Microwave oven and household cooker are devices of high voltage producer and high voltage storage batteries respectively for formation of necessary high frequencies at drive. These devices emit much heat energy because they are run at high voltages. Therefore, emitted heat energy becomes a factor that raises temperature of microwave ovens' main frame. In this research, the analysis shows the temperature distribution in microwave oven with the cooling fan drive conditions and the heat energy occurrence conditions. According to the analysis, as the speed of air outpoured in cooling fan increases, and the internal temperature decreases quantitatively. Also the inside temperature distribution was investigated by controlling heat energy emission.

  • In this paper, removal of diesel hydrocarbons (C$_{10}$-C$_{22}$) for dry and moist soil was investigated so that microwave-enhanced soil vapor extraction(SVE) reduced soil treatment time and raised remediation efficiency. Kinetic constants of diesel hydrocarbons with microwave energy were 7 times on dry soil and 1580 times on moist soil as much as those of SVE process without microwave energy. The diesel removals were 67.7~78.4% for $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$, and 0~18.5% for $C_{14}$~C$_{22}$ for dry and moist soil with SVE process only. On the other hand, dry soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process showed 89.3~99.4% removal for $C_{10}$ and $C_{12}$ and 35.6~67.0% for hydrocarbons over $C_{14}$. All hydrocarbons(C$_{10}$~C$_{22}$) studied were significantly removed (93.6~99.8%) for moist soil with microwave-enhanced SVE process. Almost all diesel hydrocarbons were usually considered as semi-volatile compounds(SVOCs). Microwave-enhanced SVE process might have a great potential for remediation of soils contaminated with SVOCs.OCs.

  • High efficient and environment friendly combustion technologies are used to be operated an extreme condition, which results in unintended flame instability such as extinction and oscillation. The use of electromagnetic energy is one of methods to enhance the combustion stability and a microwave as electromagnetic wave is receiving increased attention recently because of its high performance and low-cost system. In this study, an experiment was performed with jet diffusion flames induced by microwave. Micro jet was introduced to simulate the high velocity of industrial combustor. The results show that micro jet flames had three different modes with increasing oxidizer velocity; attached yellow flame, lifted flame, and lifted partially premixed flame. As a microwave was induced to flames, the overall flame stability and blowout limit were extended with the higher microwave power. Especially the interaction between a flame and a microwave was shown clearly in the partially premixed flame, in which the lift-off height decreased and NOx emission measured in post flame region increased with increasing microwave power. It might be attributed to increase of reactivity due to the abundance of radical pool and the enhanced absorption to thermal energy.

  • Biogas, composed mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), is a renewable gas that can serve as an alternative energy source. In this study, we developed a new microwave reformer and analyzed its reforming characteristics. We observed that higher temperatures of the microwave receptor led to increased reforming efficiency. By supplying appropriate amounts of methane and steam, we could prevent carbon generated from the thermal decomposition reaction of carbon dioxide from depositing on the catalytic active layer, thus avoiding the inhibition of catalytic activity. Hydrogen generation was enhanced when maintaining the biogas ratio and steam supply at adequate levels. Increasing the SiC ratio in the receptor improved the uniformity of temperature distribution and growth rate, resulting in higher conversion rates of the reforming process.

  • Wireless energy transmission system to a Micro Aerial Vehicle is now under development. A 5.8 GHz microwave phased array antenna and rectenna array receiver have been developed. An electric motor on a circling MAV model was driven by the transmitted power. In addition, 140GHz millimeter-waves of up to 1MW was beamed to a "Microwave Rocket" and its thrusting has been successfully demonstrated.

  • In this paper, we present a new microwave applicator to sterilize a liquid material by using the electromagnetic energy. Also, we conducted an experiment on streamlet water with our proposed sterilizer and investigated the chosen samples according to the inspection agency The result exhibited that the total number of colitis germ and general bacillus in sterilized water has been decreased rapidly as the operating time to illuminate the microwave power risen from 10 to 60 seconds.

  • To check the possibility for microwave sintering of MLCC(multi layer ceramic capacitor) the tape cast-ed BaTiO3 thick films in zirconia insulation box were sintered by the domestic microwave oven. Microwave sintered samples had higher density lower porosity than coventionally sintered ones. but they didn't show Z5U electrical properties due to short sintering time about 15 minutes.

  • We intended to confirm that microwave attenuation by tree leaves is strongly linked to water content in leaves. We sampled natural broadleaves, including Japanese cinnamon, and investigated their effects on the microwave (3 to 20 GHz) frequency characteristics using a network analyzer. Experiments determined that microwave attenuation by foliage increases as a linear function of frequency per unit weight (gram). As the frequency increases, the spatial resolution increases, but the phase difference (imaginary component) increases. So we solved the dispersion of phase difference by sweeping the frequency and taking the intermediate value. Based on these experimental results, we developed a microwave scanner on 10Ghz to describe foliage moisture as a image and to enable assessments of leaf condition. Photosynthesis is the process whereby plants synthesize oxygen and sugars from carbon dioxide and water, thereby converting light energy into chemical energy. Since water is a major parameter of photosynthesis, the quantity of water accumulated inside a leaf reflects leaf health. The equipment described here and related microwave technologies will help assess the capacity of leaves to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide.

  • This study aimed to effectively dissolve sulfide minerals through microwave-nitric acid leaching of invisible gold concentrate and then recover gold from the solid-residue with fire assay. For the purposes, this study conducted microwave-nitric acid leaching experiments to examine nitric acid concentration, time of microwave leaching, and sample addition effect. As results of the experiments, this study discovered that the weight loss rate of solid-residue increased as nitric acid concentration and microwave leaching time increased while weight loss rate decreased as sample addition increased. In an XRD analysis with solid-residue, it was discovered that pyrite completely disappeared when the nitric acid concentrate was 6 M and the microwave leaching time was 18 minutes. When a fire assay was carried out with solid-residue, gold particles with more content were recovered as nitric acid concentration and microwave leaching time increased whereas gold particles with more gold content were recovered as the sample addition decreased.

  • This study was undertaken in order to compare reflux extraction(RE) and microwave-assisted extraction(MAE) in extraction efficiency and establish optimum microwave extraction conditions in obtaining Ligularia fischeri extracts. A considerable reduction in extraction time was accomplished by MAE. When 70% methanol 50% methanol 70% ethanol, or 50% ethanol was used, MAE extract contained equal levels of soluble solid and total polyphenol as obtained by RE. The optimum microwave-assisted extraction conditions for Ligularia fischeri were achieved by 120∼150 watts of microwave energy and 4∼8 minutes of extraction time. No significant changes were found in antioxidant activity with DPPH scavenging method over the variation of microwave energy or extraction time. The use of diluted methanol or ethanol improved soluble solid content(30%), total polyphenol content(2.7%) and antioxidant activity(68%).
