  • Although most of sacral perineural cysts are asymptomatic, some may produce symptoms. Specific radicular pain may be due to distortion, compression, or stretching of nerve root by a space occupying cyst. We report a rare case of S1 radiculopathy caused by sacral perineural cyst accompanying disc herniation. The patient underwent a microscopic discectomy at L5-S1 level. However, the patient's symptoms did not improved. The hypesthesia persisted, as did the right leg pain. Cyst-subarachnoid shunt was set to decompress nerve root and to equalize the cerebrospinal fluid pressure between the cephalad thecal sac and cyst. Immediately after surgery, the patient had no leg pain. After 6 months, the patient still remained free of leg pain.

  • Structural phase transformations of silicon during nanoindentation were investigated in detail at the atomic level. The molecular dynamics simulations of nanoindentation on the (100), (110) and (111) surface of single crystalline silicon were simulated, and this supported the theoretical prediction of the anisotropic behavior of structural phase transformations. Simulations showed that microscopic aspects of phase transformation varied according to the crystallographic orientation of the contact surface and were directly linked to the slip system.

  • Arthrospira platensis (A. platensis) is a microscopic and filamentous cyanobacterium that derives its name from the spiral or helical nature of its filaments. In this study, we induced mutants of A. platensis through NMU treatment and selected two strains by level of ipid contents. We named mutant '1-9', '2-5', and they were cultivated in the same way with the wild type. During 12 days cultivation, cell growth, dry cell weight, pigment content, and lipid content were measured for characteristics of mutants. As a result, pigment and lipid content of mutants were increased about 3.6, 1.8 times compared with wild type, respectively. It was shown that total flavonoid and polyphenol contents of mutants were increased about 1.5 times compared with wild type. And radical scavenging effect of mutants were increased about 10% compared with wild type.

  • The barrier height is found to increase from 0.25 to 0.690 eV for Schottky contacts on n-InGaAs using deposition of Ag on a substrate cooled to 77K(LT). Surface analysis leads to an interface model for the LT diode in which there are oxide compounds of In:O and As:O between the metal and semiconductor, leading to behavior as a metal-insulator-semiconductor diode. The metal film deposited t LT has a finer and more uniform structure, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and in situ metal layer resistance measurement. This increased uniformity is an additional reason for the barrier height improvement. In contrast, the diodes formed at room temperature exhibit poorer performance due to an unpassivated surface and non-uniform metal coverage on a microscopic level.

  • Liver protective effects of ginsenosides as well as fractions of dammarane glycosides of Panax ginseng were studied using galactosamine (GalN)-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes. Preventing effects on GalN-induced hepatotoxicity were found both microscopic observation and determination of GPT level with total dammarane glycosides fraction and $20(S)-ginsenoside-Rb_1$ as well as $20(S)-ginsenoside-Rg_1$ at the concentration of $50{\mu}g/ml$. The syntheses of both protein and RNA were significantly increased by the treatment of $50{\mu}g/ml$ of total dammarane glycoside fraction, $20(S)-ginsenoside-Rb_1$, -Rc, -Re and $-Rg_1$, respectively in both normal and GalN-induced cytotoxic hepatocytes.

  • Profiles of naturally fractured surfaces of three sedimentary rock samples were plotted from the measured data using a mechanical profilometer. Fractal dimension of these profiles were computed and statistical F-test indicates that fractal dimension (FD) values can be used as a parameter for distinguishing the rock types. The comparison between FD values and a commonly used profile-roughness parameter called the Mayer's $Z_2$ parameter shows the superiority of the FD values as roughness estimator. Two-dimensional fractal roughness parameters of the same naturally fractured rock surfaces were also studied from their scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images at various magnification levels. The most suitable level of magnification of the SEM images for the study of the 2-D fractal roughness parameter was identified. The values of 2-D fractal roughness parameter for three different rocks were also compared using different methods of fractal dimensioning.

  • The amplification method using evanescent wave coupling has a long history and has been widely used as a new lasing method, especially, in the waveguide optics$^{(1)}$ . In particular, it has been observed experimentally that when the light wave propagating in a dielectric medium is totally reflected at the planar interface between the dielectric and a pumped active medium, the reflectance may be greater than unity, i.e., amplification is possible$^{(2)}$ . There were several attempts by other authors to explain this enhanced internal reflection (EIR) classically$^{(3)}$ . They commonly introduced a complex refractive index for the active medium with its imaginary part being negative, and this scheme was also used to describe an amplification process in a waveguide having active-cladding region$^{(4)}$ . However these theories are phenomenological, using macroscopic constants, and therefore a microscopic theory is needed to understand EIR in a fundamental level. (omitted)

  • PURPOSES: This study proposes a novel method based on microscopic simulation models to evaluate bicycle passing ways in mixed traffic flow conditions at signalized intersections. METHODS: Both operational efficiency and safety are taken into consideration in the evaluation. A widely used performance measure, delay, is used for evaluating the operational efficiency. Regarding the safety evaluation, surrogate safety measures (SSM) to represent traffic conflicts and the level of crash severity, DeltaS and Max.DeltaV, are applied in the proposed method. RESULTS: Extensive simulations and statistical tests show that an integrated bike-box way is identified as the best in terms of operational efficiency and safety. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed method and outcomes of this study will be valuable for bicycle traffic operations and facility design.

  • Gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor is intensively under investigation for commercialization of short wavelength light emitting devices and laser diodes. One of serious obstacles to overcome is to reduce the defect density in GaN film grown by various techniques such as MOCVD, HVPE, etc. Many research groups including SAIT are trying to improve the defect density to 106-107/cm2 from the level of 108-1010/cm2. We have investigated epitaxial growth behaviour of GaN thin and thick films under hidride vapour phase epitaxy (HVPE) condition. In this report, we present the microstructural and crystallographical characteristics of the GaN films grown on sapphire (0001) substrate which were studied by both conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Also we present some microscopic analysis results obtained from GaN films grown by ELO(dpitzsial lateral overgrowth)-HVPE and from GaN quantum well structures grown by MOCVD. Another serious problem in growing GaN thick film by HVPE is internal micro-cracks. We also comment the origin of the micro-crack.

  • The morphological and immunohistochemical characteristics of the adrenal gland of the lion(Panthera leo) have been studied. In the light microscopic level, the adrenal gland was surrounded by thick capsules arid weak development of the zona glomerulosa was detected. Some medullary tissues were directly connected with capsules, however the adrenal gland in the lion 'demonstrated somewhat pseudolobulated appearance. Weakly or strongly stained chromogranin-immunoreactive cells were detected in medullary regions of the adrenal gland of the lion by immunohistochemistry, and weakly stained chromogranin-immunoreactive cells were detected more frequent than strongly stained ones.
