we performed the underwater explosion analysis for the liquefied oxygen tank - a kind of fuel tank of a mid-size submarine, and tried to verify the structural safety for this structure. First, we reviewed the theory and application of underwater explosion analysis using Structure-Fluid Interaction technique and its finite element modeling scheme. Next, we modeled the explosive and sea water as fluid elements, the LOX tank as structural elements and the interface between two regions as ALE scheme. The effect on shock pressure and impulse of fluid mesh size and shape are also investigated. As the analysis result, the shock pressure due explosion propagated into the water region and hit the structure region. The plastic deformation and the equivalent stress highly appeared at the web frame and the shock mount of LOX structure, but these values were acceptable for design criteria.
The media transport systems, such as printers, copy machines, facsimiles, ATMs, cameras, etc. have been widely used and being developed rapidly. In the development of those sheet-handling machineries, it is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheet with a high degree of reliability because the sheets are fed and stacked at such a high speed. Flexible media are very thin, light and flexible, so they behave in geometric nonlinearity with large displacement and large rotation but small strain. In the flexible media analysis, aerodynamic effect from the surrounding air must be included because any small force can make large deformation. In this paper, surrounding air was modeled by incompressible Navier-Stokes flow and an arbitrary Lagranigan-Eulerian(ALE) finite element method with automatic mesh-updating technique was formulated for large domain changes. In the numerical simulations, the results with consideration of the air fast decayed and converged into static results while the results without considering air oscillated continuously.
A finite-element method was employed to analyze axisymmetric unsteady motion of a deformable bubble near the wall. In the present study a deformable bubble in a Newtonian medium near the wall was considered. In solving the governing equations a structured mesh generator was used to describe the collapse of highly deformed bubbles with the Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method being employed in order to capture the transient bubble boundary effectively. In order to check the accuracy of the present FE analysis we compared the results of our FE solutions with the result of the collapse of spherical bubbles in a large body of fluid in which solutions can be obtained using a 1D FE analysis. It has been found that 1D and 2D bubble deformations are in good agreement for spherically symmetric problems confirming the validity of the numerical code. Non-spherically symmetric problems were also solved for the collapse of bubble located near a plane solid wall. We have shown that a microjet develops at the bubble boundary away from the wall as already observed experimentally. We have discussed the effect of Reynolds number and distance of the bubble center from the wall on the transient collapse pattern of bubble.
It is well known that the quality and efficiency of the design of metal forming processes can be significantly improved with the aid of effective numerical simulations. In the present study, a two-and three-dimensional finite element simulation system, CAMP form, was developed for the analysis of metal forming processes in the PC environment. It is composed of a solver based on the thermo-rigid-viscoplastic approach and graphic user interface (GUI) based pre-and post-processors to be used for the effective description of forming conditions and graphic display of simulation results, respectively. In particular, in the case of CAMPform 2D (two-dimensional), as the solver contains an automatic remeshing module which determines the deformation step when remeshing is required and reconstructs the new mesh system, it is possible to carry out simulations automatically without any user intervention. Also, the forming analysis considers ductile fracture of the workpiece and wear of dies for better usage of the system. In the case of CAMPform 3D, general three-dimensional problems that involve complex die geometries and require remeshing can be analyzed, but full automation of simulations has yet to be achieved. In this paper, the overall structure and computational background of CAMPform will be briefly explained and analysis results of several forming processes will be shown. From the current results, it is construed that CAMPform can be used in providing useful information to assist the design of forming processes.
Recently laser scanning technologies become widely used in many areas of the modern economy. In the following paper authors show a potential spectrum of use Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) in diagnostics of reinforced concrete elements. Based on modes of failure analysis of reinforcement concrete beam authors describe downsides and advantages of adaptation of terrestrial laser scanning to this purpose, moreover reveal under which condition this technology might be used. Research studies were conducted by Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Gdansk University of Technology. An experiment involved bending of reinforced concrete beam, the process was registered by the terrestrial laser scanner. Reinforced concrete beam was deliberately overloaded and eventually failed by shear. Whole failure process was tracing and recording by scanner Leica ScanStation C10 and verified by synchronous photographic registration supported by digital photogrammetry methods. Obtained data were post-processed in Leica Cyclone (dedicated software) and MeshLab (program on GPL license). The main goal of this paper is to prove the effectiveness of TLS in diagnostics of reinforced concrete elements. Authors propose few methods and procedures to virtually reconstruct failure process, measure geometry and assess a condition of structure.

A four-node plate finite element for the analysis of laminated composites which is developed using strain gradient notation is presented. The element is based on a first-order shear deformation theory and on the equivalent lamina assumption. Strains and stresses can be calculated at different points through the thickness of the plate. They are averaged values due to the equivalent lamina assumption. A shear correction factor is used as the transverse shear strain is taken to be constant over the plate thickness while its actual variation is parabolic. Strain gradient notation, which is physically interpretable, allows for the detailed a-priori analysis of the finite element model. The polynomial expansions are inspected and spurious terms responsible for modeling errors are identified in the shear strains polynomial expansions. The element is corrected by simply removing the spurious terms from the shear strains expansions. The element is implemented into a FORTRAN finite element code in two versions; namely, with and without spurious terms. Results are compared to show the effects of the spurious terms on the solutions. It is also shown that a refined mesh composed of corrected elements provides solutions which approximate very well the analytical solutions, validating the procedure.
When gears mesh, shock and noise are produced as results of tooth error and tooth deformation under load. Transmission error (TE) is the most important cause of gear noise and vibration because TEs affect the changes of the force and the speed of gears. Gear tooth modification research plays a positive role in reducing TE and improving the design level and transmission performance of transmission systems. In high-precision manufacturing gear, gear tooth modification is also commonly used to reduce noise in practical applications. In order to study the accuracy of gear transmission, some empirical gear profile micro-modifications are introduced, and a helical gear pair is modeled and analyzed in RomaxDesigner software to investigate the utility of these modification methods. Some of these will be selected as experimental proposals for gear pairs, and these manufactured gears will be tested and compared in a semi-anechoic room later. The final purpose of this study is to find reasonable and convenient empirical formulae to facilitate improved gear production.
The study is concerned with the thermo-viscoplastic finite element analysis of axisymmetric forward hot extrusion through square dies. The problem is treated as a nonsteady state problem because the distribution of temperature and material properties are continuously changing with the punch travel. In square die extrusion, difficulties arise from the severe distortion and die interference of elements at the aperture rim of the die even with a small punch travel. And finite element computation is impossible without intermittent remeshing. Accordingly, an automatic remeshing technique is proposed by employing specially designed mesh structure near the aperture rim. The analysis of temperature distribution includes heat conduction through material interfaces, heat convection and radiation to the atmosphere and is carried out by decoupling the heat analysis from the analysis of the deformation. The extrusion load and the distributions of strain rate and temperature are computed for the given cases rendering reasonable results. Computed grid distortions are found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. It has been thus shown that the proposed method of analysis can be effectively applied to the axisymmetric hot extrusion through square dies.
This work presents results of finite element analysis of isothermal incompressible creeping viscoelastic flows with the tensor-logarithmic formulation of the Leonov model especially for the planar geometry with singular comers in the domain. In the case of 4:1 contraction flow, for all 5 meshes we have obtained solutions over the Deborah number of 100, even though there exists slight decrease of convergence limit as the mesh becomes finer. From this analysis, singular behavior of the comer vortex has been clearly seen and proper interpolation of variables in terms of the logarithmic transformation is demonstrated. Solutions of 4:1:4 contraction/expansion flow are also presented, where there exists 2 singular comers. 5 different types spatial resolutions are also employed, in which convergent solutions are obtained over the Deborah number of 10. Although the convergence limit is rather low in comparison with the result of the contraction flow, the results presented herein seem to be the only numerical outcome available for this flow type. As the flow rate increases, the upstream vortex increases, but the downstream vortex decreases in their size. In addition, peculiar deflection of the streamlines near the exit comer has been found. When the spatial resolution is fine enough and the Deborah number is high, small lip vortex just before the exit comer has been observed. It seems to occur due to abrupt expansion of the elastic liquid through the constriction exit that accompanies sudden relaxation of elastic deformation.
In this paper, a finite element analysis based on the local approach concept to fracture in the continuum damage mechanics is performed to analyze ductile fracture in two dimensional quasi-static state. First an isotropic damage model based on the generalized concept of effective stress is proposed for structural materials in the context of large deformation. In this model, the stiffness degradation is taken as a measure of damage and so, the fracture phenomenon can be explained as the critical deterioration of stiffness at a material point. The modified Riks' continuation technique is used to solve incremental iterative equations. Crack propagation is achieved by removing critically damaged elements. The mesh size sensitivity analysis and the simulation of the well known shearing mode failure in plane strain state are carried out to verify the present formulation. As numerical examples, an edge cracked plate and the specimen with a circular hole under plane stress are taken. Load-displacement curves and successively fractured shapes are shown. From the results, it can be concluded that the proposed model based on the local approach concept in the continuum damage mechanics may be stated as a reasonable tool to explain ductile fracture initiation and crack propagation.
