  • Poly(ether-block-amide) 1657 (PEBAX 1657) blended membranes with molecular weight 400 poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG 400) were prepared and their permeability was tested for the gases $N_2$, $O_2$, $CH_4$, $CO_2$, and $SO_2$ by the time-lag method. The permeation characteristics were investigated in terms of diffusivity and solubility, which are dominant factors for gas transport. With the addition of PEG 400, the permeability of all the gases increased and also the ideal selectivity for several pair gases was enhanced. In particular, selectivity for $CO_2/N_2$ ranged from 53.2 (pristine PEBAX 1657 membrane) to 84.1 (50% PEG 400 added), for $SO_2/CO_2$ from 38.9 to 50.7, and for $CO_2/CH_4$ from 17.7 to 31.4. The increase of both permeability and selectivity is mainly because of the increase of solubility of the gases, especially $CO_2$ and $SO_2$. To obtain durability against water vapor, glutaraldehyde (GA) was added to the PEBAX 1657/PEG 400 blended membranes. As a result, permeability decreased owing to a reduction of the free volume and ether oxide units, which are the main factors in elevating the permeability for the blended membranes, and selectivity decrease however; we believe that the durability of the resulting membranes would be increased.

  • For the application of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), sulfonated polystyrene/teflon (PS/PTFE) composite membranes were developed by changing monomer ratio of styrene and DVB. The composite membranes were prepared as follows: first, the monomer mixtures consisting of styrene, divinyl benzene and AIBN were impregnated in porous PTFE film and then, polymerized under 8$0^{\circ}C$ to give PS/PTFE membranes. Finally, the membranes were reacted with chlorosulfonic acid in 1,2-dichloroethane to give the sulfonated composite membranes. The measurements of ATR-FTIR, SEM, solvent uptake test and ion exchange capacity (IEC) were done for the resulting membranes before or after sulfonation, respectively, which showed the composite membranes with proper crosslinking degree and sulfonic acid content were prepared well as a function of styrene/DVB ratio. ion conductivity and methanol permeability were studied for the sulfonated membranes. It was found that with decreasing the ratio of styrene/DVB, methanol permeability decreased from $6.6{\times}10^{-7}∼1.3{\timas}10^{-7}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$/s, which are much lower values than that of Nafion$^{(R)}$117($1.02{\times}10^{-6}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$/s). Under the same monomer condition, ion conductivity decreased from 0.11 S/cm ($25^{\circ}C$) to 0.08 S/cm ($25^{\circ}C$), which are similar or a little higher values compared with $Nafion^{(R)}117 (1.02{\times}10^{-6}$ $\textrm{cm}^2$/s, 0.0824 S/cm). These two results confirmed the composite membranes prepared could be applied successfully to DMFC.C.

  • In this study, we investigated the cellular protective effects and mechanisms of nicotiflorin and its aglycone kaempferol isolated from Annona muricata. The protective effect of these components against $^1O_2$-induced cell damage was also studied by using L-ascorbic acid and (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol as controls. Kaempferol exhibited the most potent protective effect, followed by (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol and nicotiflorin. L-Ascorbic acid did not exhibit any cellular protective effects. To elucidate the mechanism underlying protective effects, the quenching rate constant of the singlet oxygen, free radical-scavenging activity, ROS-scavenging activity, and uptake ratio of the erythrocyte membrane were measured. The results showed that the cell membrane penetration is a key factor determining the cellular protective effect of kaempferol and its glycoside nicotiflorin. The result from L-ascorbic acid demonstrated that the cellular protective effect of a compound depends on its ability to penetrate the cell membrane and is independent of its antioxidant capacity. In addition, it is suggested that cellular protective effects of kaempferol and (+)-${\alpha}$-tocopherol depend not only on the cell permeability, but also on free radical- and ROS-scavenging activities. These results indicate that the cell permeability and free radical- and ROS- scavenging activities of antioxidants are major factors affecting the protection of cell membranes against the oxidative damage induced by photosensitization reaction.

  • Ultrafiltration (UF) tests performed on traditional soy sauce (kanjang) using UF flat membrane test cell unit with thin film laminar flow similar to the spiral type membrane module in batch operations revealed reduction in permeate flux is proportional to the logarithm values of volume reduction ratio of the retentate kanjang at different feed rate of kanjang. Feed rate of 1.5 L/min was found to be adequate for long-term UF operation of kanjang using the test unit attached with MW cut-off size of 200,000 dalton polyoleffin plastic membrane in batch operation with the least concentration polarization. The higher the feed rate of kanjang, the lower the permeability of total nitrogen and NaCl, resulting in lower optical density at 500 nm and lower permeability of minerals such as Cu, Mn, and Mg. Microbial cells were completely rejected regardless of the feed rate, whereas most free amino acids were not.

  • In this study, crosslinked copolyimides with random (r-) and block (b-) structure were fabricated using N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid and pentanediol as crosslinkers. Linear r- and b-sulfonated copolyimides were also fabricated for comparison. Ion exchange capacities of r- and b-copolyimides were very similar to each other owing to their strong dependence of sulfonic acid content. The physical crosslinking via dimerization of carboxylic acid groups induced a reduced average interchain distance in b-copolyimide without crosslinkers. Consequently, its water uptake and methanol permeability were lower than those of r-sulfonated copolyimides. Simultaneously, the reduced interchain distance increased the content of fixed-charged ions per unit volume. The high fixed-charged ion density contributed to an enhancement of proton conductivity In the b-sulfonated copolyimide. Crosslinking caused the reduction of average interchain distance between polymer chains irrespective of types of crosslinker and polymer structure, leading to low methanol permeability. On the contrary, their proton conductivity was improved owing to formation of effective hydrophilic channels responsible for proton conduction. In particular, this trend was observed in r-copolyimide containing a fixed charged ion.

  • In this paper, we developed mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) consisting of SBS-g-POEM block-graft copolymer, ionic liquid (EMIMTFSI) and ZIF-8 nanoparticles to separate a $CO_2/N_2$ gas pair. The SBS-g-POEM is a rubbery block-graft copolymer synthesized through low-cost free-radical polymerization. The EMIMTFSI was dissolved into the SBS-g-POEM matrix and solution synthesized ZIF-8 nanoparticles were also dispersed into the copolymer matrix. The physico-chemical properties of manufactured membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), which showed that the components were compatible with each other. The gas separation performance was confirmed by time-lag measurements showing $CO_2$ permeability of 537.0 barrer and $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity of 15.2. The result represents the EMIMTFSI and ZIF-8 nanoparticles improves the gas permeability more than two-times, without significantly sacrificing the $CO_2/N_2$ selectivity.

  • Metallic bipolar plate is the one of the promising candidate material for PEMFC because of mechanical strength, low gas permeability, electrical and thermal conductivity. However, the corrosion is the main obstacle of metallic bipolar plate, and many investigations, especially coating on base metal, have been carried out to avoid corrosion. Gold is considered as the one of the best coating material because of its corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. In this study, gold coated metallic bipolar plate was developed and evaluated. Due to our coating process, gold can be well-adhere to the base material, and hydrophobic material on its gold surface was coated by dipping method for better water management. To verify coating reliability, a single fuel cell(50cm2) was evaluated, and its durability over 4000hrs was demonstrated.

  • [ ${\beta}$ ]Ketoacyl acyl carrier protein synthase I (KAS I) is involved in the elongation of unsaturated fatty acids in bacterial fatty acid synthesis and a therapeutic target of designing novel antibiotics. In this study, we performed receptor-oriented pharmacophore-based in silico screening of E. coli KAS I (ecKAS I) with the aim of identifying novel inhibitors. We determined one pharmacophore map and selected 8 compounds as candidates ecKAS I inhibitors. We discovered one antimicrobial compound, YKAe1008, N-(3-pyridinyl) hexanamide, displaying minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values in the range of 128-256 ${\mu}g/mL$ against MRSA and VREF. YKAe1008 was subsequently assessed for binding to ecKAS I using saturation-transfer difference NMR spectroscopy. Further optimization of this compound will be carried out to improve its antimicrobial activity and membrane permeability against bacterial cell membrane.

  • We describe the cases of two patients with chronic subdural hematomas who were treated with Oreong-san. The patients' symptoms improved, as verified by brain computed tomography imaging. Oreong-san may control membrane permeability by inhibiting the aquaporin channel of the outer membrane of a hematoma. We speculate that hydrostatic modulation is a key mechanism underlying the effectiveness of Oreong-san in the treatment of subdural hematomas.

  • The rheological characteristics of the ethanol fermentation broth were pseudoplastic when the yeast concentration was above 150g/L. From the viewpoint of rheological properties, the cell concentration below 150g/L was recommended for ethanol fermentation. Since the cell floc was formed at the cell concentration of 100 g/L, yeast cells were not much plugged in the pores of the membrane. The cell concentration above 100g/L was desirable when considering the permeability of the membrane. Since ethanol productivity was the highest when the cell concentration was 130 g/L in cell recycled ethanol fermentation. The optimal dilution rate was determined at 1.3 h-1 at constant cell mass of 130g/L. At this dilution rate, the ethanol productivity and glucose conversion ratio ware 80 g/L$\cdot$h and 0.94, respectively.
