  • Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2). Currently, the management of patients with COVID-19 depends mainly on repurposed drugs which include chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir/ritonavir, ribavirin, remdesivir, favipiravir, umifenovir, interferon-α, interferon-β and others. In this review, the potential of Nigella sativa (black cumin seeds) to treat the patients with COVID-19 analyzed, as it has shown to possess antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, immunomodulatory, bronchodilatory, antihistaminic, antitussive, antipyretic and analgesic activities. Medline/PubMed Central/PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Directory of open access journals (DOAJ) and reference lists were searched to identify articles associated with antiviral and other properties of N.sativa related to the signs and symptoms of COVID-19. Various randomized controlled trials, pilot studies, case reports and in vitro and in vivo studies confirmed that N.sativa has antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, bronchodilatory, antihistaminic, antitussive activities related to causative oraganism and signs and symptoms of COVID-19. N. sativa could be used as an adjuvant therapy along with repurposed conventional drugs to manage the patients with COVID-19.

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the measurement of free thyroxine (FT4) by radioimmunoassay, we measured free $T_4\;and\;T_4,\;T_3,\;T_3RU$, TSH and TBG serum levels by radioimmunoassay in 18 healthy persons and 52 patients with various thyroid diseases and 11 normal pregnant women. The results are as follows. 1. In 19 cases of overt hyperthyroidism, $T_3,\;free\;T_4$ and FTI, $T_4/TBG$ ratio reflect hyperfunction in all cases. $T_4$ is increased in 94% (18/19) and TBG and TSH are decreased in 79% (15/19). 2. In 8 patients with overt hypothyroidism, TSH is increased in all cases and free $T_4$ and FTI is decreased in all cases. $T_4$ is decreased in 87.5% (7/8), $T_3$ is decreased in 75% (6/8) and $T_4/TBG$ ratio is decreased in 62.5% (5/8). 3. In 5 patients who are clinically in euthyroid state after treatment of hyperthyroidism, $T_4,\;free\;T_4$, FTI and TSH are in the normal range in all cases and $T_3$ is normal in 60% (3/5) and slightly increased in 40% (2/5). 4. In 10 patients who showed clinically borderline hypothyroidism after treatment of hyperthyroidism, TSH is increased in all cases and free $T_4$ and FTI are decreased in all cases, but $T_4\;and\;T_3,\;T_4/TBG$ ratio are in the normal limit in all cases. So after treatment of hyperthyroidism, TSH, free $T_4$ or FTI are recommended as optimal thyroid function test. 5. In normal pregnancy, free $T_4$, FTI and $T_4/TBG$ ratio reflect normal function, but the other parameters revealed unreliable due to the influence of increased TBG. Also TBG and TSH level in pregnancy is increased significantly compared with normal healthy control group. 6. The coefficients of correlation between free $T_4$ and FTI were 0.862 (p<0.001) and 0.685 (p<0.001) between free $T_4\;and\;T_4/TBG$ ratio. In most patients, diagnostic value of free $T_4$ was comparable and even superior to FTI, so free $T_4$ measurement can be used routinely with thyrotropin assay in the diagnosis of hypothyrodism or with $T_3$ for the diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.

  • Objectives: This study was aimed to research clinical characteristics of female patients with cold hypersensitivity on the hands and feet compared with non-cold hypersensitivity group. Methods: 134 women patients were collected from 6 Korean medicine hospitals, and divided into 2 groups(cold hypersensitivity group and non-cold hypersensitivity group). This survey was composed of 19 questions related to clinical symptoms of cold hypersensitivity. Results: We found out the differences between 2 groups in 10 questions among 19 questions in the survey results. (Body Type, Energy, Digestibility, Skin Type, Facial Complexion, Chill, Dry Mouth and Thirst, Preference between Coolness and Warmth, Thickness of Tongue Fur, Floating and Sinking of Pulse) Conclusions: From these results, Patients with cold hypersensitivity on hands and feet have relative clinical characteristics as follows. They are relatively weak and lethargic. They have dry skin and look more pale. They feel chill easily and have dry mouth and thirst. They prefer warmth and have indigestion more. They had more various infirm and ill clinical characteristics compared with the other group from the view of Korean medicine.

  • Influence of aging on plasma renin activity was evaluated in healthy normotensive subjects (age range $21\sim63$ years, 413 males) devoid of cardiorenal or endocrinological problems. The age-related decrease of plasma renin activity in the subjects between $21\sim28$ years group and $36\sim42$ years group was slight, but over the 43 years groups was significantly different. The age-related suppression of plasma renin activity was much more smooth and continuous all over the age ranges evaluated. The sexual difference in plasma renin activity was noticed between the subjects of 22 years old group(34 males) and 19 years grop(34 females) (p<0.003). The data suggest that the age-related suppression of plasma renin activity appeared in healthy normotensive subjects should be considered in the case of evaluation of low renin essential hypertension.

  • Objective : To research the trends of study related to myofascial pain syndrome(MPS) and acupuncture in PubMed, and to establish the hereafter direction of myofascial pain syndrome(MPS) with acupuncture. Methods : We searched in PubMed, with myofascial pain syndrome and acupuncture, trigger point and acupuncture limitted by abstract. Results : 1. The pattern of the study was as follows : Review article(11), Clinical(11) rondomized controlled trials(21). We further estimated 24 articles. 2. Many of these studies provide equivocal results because of designs, sample size and the other, affirmative view is 10 articles, contradictive view is 6 articles, and somewhat reservative regards are 8 articles for therapeutic effect of myofascial pain syndrome with acupuncture. 3. Suggestions on further endolphin related research, neurophysiology, biophysics and phamacology are made. 4. More clinical data would be needed to prove effects of myofascial pain syndrome with acupuncture.

  • This study was systematic review to confirm the effects of the yoga on dysmenorrhea. Seven articles were extracted from the CINAHL, the Cochrane library, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Koreamed electronic databases. Menstrual pain intensity and duration, menstrual distress, QOL, anxiety, anger, and depression levels, homocysteine, TSH, FSH, LH, and prolactin levels were decreased significantly in the yoga group, compared with control group. These findings imply that yoga are a favorable intervention for dysmenorrhea.

  • This paper presents an orientation-based adaptive prediction method for effective lossless image compression. For a robust prediction, the proposed method estimates the directional information and the property near the current pixel in a support region-based fashion, not a pixel-based one which is sensitive to a small variation. We improve the prediction performance effectively by selection of the prediction pixel adaptively according to the similarity between support regions of the current pixel and the neighboring pixels. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves excellent prediction performance measured in entropy of the prediction error compared to a number of conventional prediction methods such as MED, GAP, and EDP. Moreover the complexity of the proposed algorithm measured by average execution time is low compared to MED which is the simplest prediction method.
