  • Herein, we discuss the in situ measurement of the electron temperature in the ionosphere/plasmasphere by means of DC Langmuir probes. Major instruments which have been reported are a conventional DC Langmuir probe, whose probe voltage is swept; a pulsed probe, which uses pulsed bias voltage; a rectification probe, which uses sinusoidal signal; and a resonance cone probe, which uses radio wave propagation. The content reviews past observations made with the instruments above. We also discuss technical factors that should be taken into account for reliable measurement, such as problems related to the contamination of electrodes and the satellite surface. Finally, we discuss research topics to be studied in the near future.

  • The demands for reliable particle cloud temperature measurement exist in many process industries and scientific researches. Particle cloud temperature measurements depend on radiation thermometry at two or more color bands. In this study, we developed a sensitive, fast response and compact online infrared two-color probe to measure the temperature of a particle cloud in a phase of two field flow (solid-gas). The probe employs a detector contained two InGaAs photodiodes with different spectral responses in the same optical path, which allowed a compact probe design. The probe was designed to suit temperature measurements in harsh environments with the advantage of durability. The developed two-color probe is capable of detecting particle cloud temperature as low as $300^{\circ}C$, under dynamic conditions.

  • Car inspection systems are regularly carried out by the state to ensure the safety and emission status of cars, thereby improving the safety and quality of life by reducing fine dust and greenhouse gases that are the main culprits of vehicle defects and air pollution. These automobile inspections are largely divided into either regular or comprehensive inspections. This study analyzed the smoke measuring probes used in the lug - down 3 mode. In the previously issued paper "Improvement of Soot Probe Efficiency for Automotive Emission Measurement," an improved smoke measurement probe(B) improved on the problems that arise from the current smoke measurement probe (A). In this study, a technique that can improve the probe's inhalation efficiency over the improved (B) probes was applied to probes (C). Probe (C) involves a structure designed close to the center of the circumference of the exhaust pipe, and the suction efficiency was improved by adding a variable center unit.

  • A new mechanical probe for 3-D feature measurement on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) is presented. The probe is composed of the contact stylus and the three-component force sensor. With the stylus mounted on the force sensor, the probe can not only measure 3-D features, but also detect contact force acting on the stylus tip. Furthermore, the probing direction and the actual contact position can be determined by the relationship among three components of contact force to be detected. In this paper, transformation matrix representing the relationship between the external force acting on the stylus tip and the output voltages of measurement gauges is derived and calibrated. The prototype of probe is developed and its availability is investigated through the experimental setup for calibration test of the probe. A series of experimental results show that the proposed probe can be an effective means of improving the accuracy of touch probing on CMM.

  • Measurement and inspection of freeform surfaces are required in reverse design processes. In the case of surface measurement using a touch probe, probe radius compensation affects measuring accuracy. But current industrial practice depends upon an operator's experience to compensate for probe radius. In this paper, an on-the-machine measuring and inspection system for freeform surfaces is studied. Probe radius compensation methodology is investigated by modeling of B-spline surfaces based on digitized data. The accuracy and reliability of the developed system is verified through various kinds of numerical simulations and on-the-machine experiments.

  • When the trailing edge and leading edge of an airfoil contour of high pressure compressor blades are measured, there exists a measurement error due to the size of the probe stylus ball diameter. In the paper an experimental study is provided to determine the optimum diameter of the probe stylus in inspecting the airfoil of the high pressure compressor blade. The measurement and analysis procedure suggested in this paper will be helpful to those who are involved in measuring and inspecting various types of blades.

  • To evaluate the accurate performance of turbomachinery, it is important to measure the unsteady flow phenomena downstream of the rotor blade. This paper presents the development of the fast-response total pressure probe for the measurement of the total pressure field at the exit of rotor and the result of measurement in a 1-stage axial turbine. The fast-response total pressure probe was fabricated by installing a fast-response pressure sensor near the head of a Kiel probe. And it measured the phase-lock averaged total pressure downstream of an 1-stage axial turbine. The developed probe successfully measured the accurate total pressure distribution at rotor exit and made possible to evaluate the loss distribution and the accurate performance of turbomachinery.

  • Compensation of probe radius is required for accurate measurement in metal working industry. Compensation involves correctly measuring data on the surface in the amount of radius of the touch probe with a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). Mechanical parts with free-formed curves and surfaces are complex enough so that accurate measurement and compensation are indispensable. This paper presents necessary algorithms involved in the compensation of the probe radius for free-formed curves and surfaces. Application of pillar curve is the focus for the compensation.

  • An instrument using thermal probe method was designed to measure thermal conductivity of liquid and solid foods. Thermal conductivity probe was designed with diameter to length ratio of 100 and diameter of 0.51 mm to minimize axial flow effect on thermal conductivity measurement. Thermal conductivities of distilled/deionized water, glycerin, and beef frankfurter meat were measured at $20-80^{\circ}C$. Mean thermal conductivity values of water showed less than 2.0% difference from several reference values without using time correction factor or probe calibration constant. For glycerin, difference was less than 0.7% from reference values at $20-50^{\circ}C$. Mean values of thermal conductivity for beef frankfurter meat ranged from 0.389 to $0.350\;W/m{\cdot}K$ at $20-80^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper described about on-machine profile measurement of aspheric surfaces using contact probing technique in ultra precision machine. A contact probe has been designed as a sensing device to obtain measuring resolutions in nanometer regime using a circle leaf spring mechanism and a capacitive-type sensor. The contact probe which is installed on the z-axis is In touch with the aspheric objects which is fixed on the spindle of the diamond turning machine(DTM) during the measuring procedure. The x, z-axis motions of the machine are monitored by a set of two orthogonal plane mirror type laser interferometers. As a results, the developed contact probe on-machine measurement system showed 10 nanometers repeatability with a ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ and uncertainty of 200 nmPv.
