  • Impulsive noise appears as black and/or white spots in an image. It is usually caused by errors during the image acquisition or transmission through communication channels. This paper presents a study on the impulsive noise reduction filter of digital image. A much more effective method for removing impulse noise is weighted median filtering. But it loses some information by changing center value with no condition. We propose some new technique to change center value with some conditions. In this paper, the performance of conditional weighted median filter is compared to the commonly used median filter, mean filter, max/min filter, and weighted median filter. A quantitative comparison is performed on MSE (Mean Square Error), RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), and SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio). Proposed conditional weighted median filter can yield better performance than regular filters.

  • In this study, a model was developed to predict the peak particle velocity (PPV) that affects people and the surrounding environment during blasting. Four machine learning models using the k-nearest neighbors (kNN), classification and regression tree (CART), support vector regression (SVR), and particle swarm optimization (PSO)-SVR algorithms were developed and compared with each other to predict the PPV. Mt. Yogmang located in Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do was selected as a study area, and 1048 blasting data were acquired to train the machine learning models. The blasting data consisted of hole length, burden, spacing, maximum charge per delay, powder factor, number of holes, ratio of emulsion, monitoring distance and PPV. To evaluate the performance of the trained models, the mean absolute error (MAE), mean square error (MSE), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used. The PSO-SVR model showed superior performance with MAE, MSE and RMSE of 0.0348, 0.0021 and 0.0458, respectively. Finally, a method was proposed to predict the degree of influence on the surrounding environment using the developed machine learning models.

  • A method is proposed for efficiently estimating the mean of a population which has a linear trend. The proposed estimator is based on the centered modified systematic sampling method and the concept of interpolation. Using the expected mean square error criterion, it is shown that the proposed method is more efficient than conventional methods in most real cases.

  • In this paper, we propose an channel estimation method for Multi-Input Multi-Output-Orthogonal frequency Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM). The proposed method estimates uniquely all channel frequency responses needed in space-frequency block coded OFDM systems using "comb-type" pilot symbols. To reduce the computational complexity of the proposed method, least square(LS) and linear minimum mean square error(LMMSE) are used in the frequency-domain. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated by computer simulation for rayleigh fading channel.

  • In this work, it was investigated the usability of artificial bee colony (ABC) and genetic algorithm (GA) in modeling adsorption of Co(II) onto drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS). DWTS, obtained as inevitable byproduct at the end of drinking water treatment stages, was used as an adsorbent without any physical or chemical pre-treatment in the adsorption experiments. Firstly, DWTS was characterized employing various analytical procedures such as elemental, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, XRD, XRF and TGA/DTA analysis. Then, adsorption experiments were carried out in a batch system and DWTS's Co(II) removal potential was modelled via ABC and GA methods considering the effects of certain experimental parameters (initial pH, contact time, initial Co(II) concentration, DWTS dosage) called as the input parameters. The accuracy of ABC and GA method was determined and these methods were applied to four different functions: quadratic, exponential, linear and power. Some statistical indices (sum square error, root mean square error, mean absolute error, average relative error, and determination coefficient) were used to evaluate the performance of these models. The ABC and GA method with quadratic forms obtained better prediction. As a result, it was shown ABC and GA can be used optimization of the regression function coefficients in modeling adsorption experiments.

  • In this paper, two-hop beamforming relay system, with source, relay, and destination nodes, is considered and the transmit- and receive-beamforming vectors and the relay processing matrix are designed for minimizing a mean square error (MMSE) between the transmit and receive signals. Here, to reduce the transmit power of the source or the relay, two local inequality constraints are involved with MMSE problem. By adopting the Lagrange method, closed formed Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions (equalities) are derived and an iterative algorithm is developed to solve the entangled KKT equalities. Due to the inequality power constraints, the source or the relay can reduce its transmit power when the received signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) of the first- and the second-hop are different. Meanwhile, the destination can achieve almost identical bit-error-rate performance compared to an optimal beamforming system maximizing the received SNR. This claim is supported by a computer simulation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate statistical validity of medical articles that used various statistical techniques such as t-test, analysis of variance, correlation analysis, regression analysis and chi-square test. For study 429 original articles using those statistical methods were selected from Journal of Korean Acupuncture & Moxibusition Society published from 1984 to 2002. 429 original articles were reviewed to analyzed the statistical procedures. Results are summarized as follows : 1. In this study 93 articles(21.68%) of 429 ones didn't report statement of statistical method in detail. 2. 53 articles(12.53%) didn't report p-value in correctly, and 245 articles(57.11 %) used mean${\pm}$standard error (Mean${\pm}$SEM.) and 109 articles used mean${\pm}$standard deviation(Mean${\pm}$SD.). All of 23 articles using nonparametric statistical techniques made an error to central tendency or dispersion. 3. 175 articles(59.93%) and 14 articles(4.79%) of 292 ones made an error to description of equal variances and normal distribution. 4. 99 articles(50%) of 185 ones misused t-test and 4 articles of 5 ones misused chi-square test. 5. 28 articles(73.68%) of 38 ones using discrete variable misused parametric technique such as t-test or ANOVA. 2 articles and 1 article of 125 ones choosing paired samples misused independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. 6. 20 articles using analysis of variance didn't use multiple comparison.

  • This paper presents a method for determining optimal grayscale function processing(FP) morphological filters under the least square (LMS) error criterion. The optimal erosion and dilation filters with a grayscale structuring element(GSE) are determined by minimizing the mean square error (MSE) between the desired signal and the filter output. It is shown that convergence of the erosion and dilation filters can be achieved by a proper choice of the step size parameter of the LMS algorithm. In an attempt to determine optimal closing and opening filters, a matrix representation of both opening and closing with a basis matrix is proposed. With this representation, opening and closing are accomplished by a local matrix operation rather than cascade operations. The LMS and back-propagation algorithm are utilzed for obtaining the optimal basis matrix for closing and opening. Some results of optimal morphological filters applied to 2-D images are presented.

  • In this paper, we describe the features of the fundamental frequency contour of Korean read speech, and propose a new stylization method to characterize the Fø pattern of segments. Our algorithm consists of three stylization processes : the segment level, the syllable level, and the sord level. For stylization of Fø contour in the segment level , we applied least square error minimization method to determine Fø values at initial, medial, and final position in a segment. In the syllable level, we determine the stylized Fø pattern of a syllable using the mean Fø value of each word and style information for each word, syllable and segment, we reconstruct Fø contour of sentences. The simulation results show that the error is less than 10% of the actual Fø contour for each sentence. In perception test, there is little difference between the synthesized speech with the original difference between the synthesized speech with the original Fø contour and the synthesized speech with the stylized Fø contour.
