  • Shin-Ki-Hwan (Shen-Qi-Wan, SKH), Bo-Jung-Ik-Ki-Tang (Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang, BJIKT), and Sa-Mul-Tang (Si-Wu-Tang, SMT) have been used for various kinds of deficiency syndromes, such as 'yang', 'qi', and 'blood', respectively. The objects of this study were to determine the effects of water extracts of three different kinds of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), SKH, BJIKT, and SMT, on the anxiolytic activities in the elevated plus-maze test and to clarify the differences among 'yang', 'qi', and 'blood'. The water extracts of SKH, BJIKT, and SMT were orally administered to male SD rats, at 1.0 g/kg for 10 days. All rats were subjected to behavioral tests for the anxiolytic activity at 10 days. SKH, for the benefiting 'yang'agents, significantly increased the ratio of open arms entry to the total arms entry and time spent in the open arms (p<0.05), suggesting anxiolytic effect. However, both BJIKT and SMT decreased the ratio of open arms entry to the total arms entry and increased times spent in the closed arms (p<0.05). From these findings, it can be speculated that SKH only exhibits anxiolytic effect and that the different anxiolytic effects in the elevated plus-maze test may be come from the meanings of 'yang', 'qi', and 'blood'in oriental diagnostics though the cases are restricted.

  • Objectives : In the present study, we assessed the effects of the ethanolic extract of Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge on the learning and memory impairments induced by scopolamine using the passive avoidance and the Morris water maze tasks in mice. Methods : The cognition-enhancing effect of C. pinnatifida was investigated using a passive avoidance test, the Morris water maze test and Y-maze test in mice. Drug-induced amnesia was induced by treating animals with scopolamine (1 mg/kg, i.p.). Results : The ethanolic extract of C. pinnatifida (100, and 200 mg/kg) significantly reversed the scopolamine-induced cognitive impairments in the passive avoidance test (p < 0.05). Moreover, C. pinnatifida (200 mg/kg) also improved escape latencies in training trials and increased swimming times and distances within the target zone of the Morris water maze (p < 0.05). On the Y-maze test, C. pinnatifida (100, and 200 mg/kg) also significantly reversed scopolamine- induced cognitive impairments in mice (p < 0.05). Conclusions : The ethanolic extract of Crataegus pinnatifida dramatically possesses the anti-amnestic and cognitive-enhancing activities related to the memory processes, and these activities were parallel to treatment duration and dependent on the learning models.

  • Background: Atrial fibrillation is associated with several complications such as cerebro-vascular accidents and peripheral arterial embolism. Most of the patients who have this arrhythmia chronically feel their heart beating and so they are frightened; therefore, the quality of a patient's life is decreased. The purpose of this article is to determine the long term results of a modified Maze procedure and the factors that influence the success of the procedure. Material and Method: This study enrolled 88 patients who underwent the modified Maze with using cryoablation between June, 2001 and February, 2007. The 88 consecutive patients were divided into two groups ac cording to how the pulmonary veins were isolated, that is, with or without cryoablation. There were 58 patients who were isolated by cutting and sewing in the right pulmonary veins and by cyroablation in the left pulmonary veins in group 1 (group 1, n=58), and 30 patients who underwent isolation by cryoablation in the right & left pulmonary veins were placed in group 2 (group 2, n=30). The ECG was checked at discharge to determine the sinus conversion rate and we followed up the patients to determine whether or not the patients maintained sinus rhythm. We also checked the ECG at the last visit to determine the patients' heart rhythm. Result: The mean follow up time was $44.3{\pm}19.2$ months. At discharge, 72.4% of the patients in group 1 were in proper sinus rhythm and 66.7% of the patients in group 2 were in proper sinus rhythm. At the last follow up, 81% of the patients in group 1 were in normal sinus rhythm and 60% of the patients in group 2 were in normal sinus rhythm. When we analyzed the data via the Kaplan-Meier method, 86.5% of the patients were free from atrial fibrillation (% free from AF) at 1 year, 80% of the patients were free from atrial fibrillation at 5 year in group 1 and 70% of the patients were free from atrial fibrillation at 1 year and 51 % of the patients in group 2 were free from atrial fibrillation at 5 year. Conclusion: The modified Maze technique using cryoablation was a simple and effective procedure. But the success rate of the Maze technique using cryoblation is lower than that of the standard Maze III. The method using cryoablation shorten the operation time, but we must conduct more studies to get a better result of the modified Maze technique with using cryoablation.

  • A maze-escaping method with cooperating work of robots alongside one another will be proposed in this paper. Educational robots can communicate each other using Zigbee; however, they can't solve problems together due to their lack of arithmetic function. The robots walk upright controlled by a motion program; furthermore, they recognize an intersection or a dead-end in the use of distant sensors with sending data and receiving commands from the central control system. The maze-search algorithms were modified so that all robots can effectively navigate the maze.

  • The selective response of the sea bass, Lateolabrax japonieus and the gray rock cod, Sebastes inermis to the colored twines was studied in a white tiled aquarium C400LX60WX70H em), by use of Y -maze made of gray plastic plate. Anyone of the different colored twines, white, black, blue, yellow and red, was strung crosswise on a rectangular frame which was mounted to one of the two outlet ends of Y -maze, and another colored twine was used to the other end of the Y -maze. In each trial, a fish was guided toward the inlet of the Y -maze to let the fish select either one of the two different colored twines. The results obtained are aS follows: 1. Sea bass preferably selected the colored twines in a order of white, blue, yellow, black and red with significant difference. 2. Gray rock cod showed little difference in selecting colored twines even though the fish selected white one a little more frequently.

  • Halftoning is very important image processing techniques in the digital printing industry which is a process of converting a continuous-tone image to bi-level tone image. In this paper we introduce a new digital halftoning method based on maze generation algorithm as a replacement algorithm of halftoning with space-filling curve. Previous error-diffusion methods based on space-filling curve suffer from regular pattern artifacts from uniform scan pattern. We use maze generation algorithm to remove this undesirable pattern of space-filling curve method.

  • In this paper, I propose the method of cooperative work of swarm robot for escaping maze. The robots can communicate with each other using Zigbee, but the central control system send commands to robots because of low processing power of robots. Robots navigate the blinded maze and send information such as movement to the central control system for building map. The central control system analysis the received data and find path to escape from maze.

  • Background and Objectives: The left atrial appendage (LAA) can contribute significantly to LA mechanical contraction. Nevertheless, the preventive effect of LAA occlusion during the maze procedure against cerebral infarction remains controversial. In this study, we compared the surgical, cardiac hemodynamic, and neurologic outcomes between LAA preservation and occlusion performed during the maze procedure. Methods: Between January 2015 and August 2021, 252 patients underwent the maze procedure using cryoablation at our medical center. After excluding patients according to our exclusion criteria (i.e., mechanical prosthesis implantation, preexisting LAA thrombus), LAA was preserved in 113 patients (non-occlusion group) and occluded in 75 patients (occlusion group). Outcomes were compared using propensity score matching (PSM). Results: PSM did not reveal significant intergroup differences in baseline characteristics between the non-occlusion (n=53) and occlusion (n=53) groups. During a median follow-up of 44 months, 2 patients in the non-occlusion group (3.8%) experienced ischemic strokes. There was no significant difference in the rate of freedom from stroke (p=0.19) and major adverse cardiac events (p=0.43) between the 2 groups. Through echocardiography at 1-year follow-up, a statistically significant difference in LA mechanical contraction was observed between the non-occlusion group and occlusion group (24 of 33 [72.7%] vs. 18 of 37 [48.6%], respectively; p=0.04). Conclusions: In this study, preservation of the LAA during the maze procedure resulted in better LA function than LAA occlusion, with similar rates of stroke.

  • In the present study, we assessed the effects of white ginseng and red ginseng extract on the learning and memory impairments induced by scopolamine. The cognition-enhancing effect of ginseng extracts was investigated using the Morris water maze and Y-maze test. Drug-induced amnesia was induced by treating animals with scopolamine (2 mg/kg, i.p.), an antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine (ACh) receptor. Tacrine was used a positive control. Ginseng extract (200 mg/kg, p.o.), tacrine (10 mg/kg, p.o.) administration significantly reduced the escape latency during training in the Morris water maze (p<0.05). At the probe trial session, scopolamine significantly increased the escape latency on day 5 in comparison with control (p<0.01). The effect of ginseng extracts on spontaneous alternation in Y-maze was similar to that of scopolamine treated group. In addition, numbers of arm entries were similar in all experimental groups. Moreover, red ginseng extract significantly inhibited acetylcholinesterase activity in the cortex and serum (p<0.05). Brain ACh contents of ginseng extract treated groups increased more than that of scopolamine group, which did not show statistically significant. These results suggest that ginseng extract may be useful for the treatment of cognitive impairment.

  • Kupunggibodan(KU), Gamisamul-tang(GA) and Whangryunhaedok-tang(WH) are clinically the most popular prescriptions as an herbal medicine in the treatment of ischemia. In order to compare and evaluate their protective effects on the ischema-induced cognitive deficits by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), we examined its ability to improve ischemia-induced cell loss and impairements of learning and memory in the Morris water maze and eight-arm radial arm maze. Focal cerebral ischemia produced a marked cell loss, decrease in acetylcholinesterase(AchE) reactivity in the hippocampus, and learning and memory deficits in two behavioral tasks. Pretreatment with WH (100 mg/kg, p.o.) produced a substantial increase in acquisition in the Morris water maze. Pretreatment with KU increased the perfomance of the resention test in the Morris water maze. WH, KU and GA caused a significant improvement in choice accuracy in radial arm maze test. WH was superior to KU and GA in perfomance of the radial arm maze test. Consistent with behavioral data, staining with cresyl violet showed that pretreatments with WH, but not KU and GA significantly recovered the ischemia-induced cell loss in the hippcampal CA1 area. In addition, pretreatments with WH and KU recovered the ischemia-induced reduction of AchE reactivity in the hippocampal CA1 area. These results demonstrated that KU, GA and WH have protective effects against ischimea-induced learning and memory impairments and that the efficacy was the order of WH>KU>GA in tratment of ischemia induced memory deficits. The present studies provide an evidence of KU, GA and WH as putative treatment of vascular dementia. Supported by a fund from the Ministry of Health and Welfare(HMP-00-OO-04-0004), and the Brain Korea 21 Project from Korean Ministry of Education, Korea.
