  • We present a micromechanical active amplifier, inspired from the principle of the outer hair cells in cochlea, amplifying both displacement and force. The present micromechanical active amplifier modulates the resonant carrier motion using the variable stiffness spring whose stiffness changes proportionally to the input motion. We design, fabricate, and characterize two types of the amplifiers A and B, each having the variable stiffness spring fur the maximum displacement gain and force gain, respectively. In the experimental study, the amplifier A shows the displacement gain of 5.62, which is 2.15 times larger than that of the amplifier 3. The amplifier B shows the force gain of 10.0, resulting in 1.26 times larger value compared to that of the amplifier A. We experimentally verify that the haircell-inspired micromechanical amplifiers are capable to amplify both displacement and force.

  • In this paper, both feasible power gain and power added efficiency at the operating center frequency of 12 GHz are stressed to design a power FET with double-heterjunction structure. The variable parameters or the design are the unit gate width, the gate length, the doping density of AlGaAs, the AlGaAs thickness, the spacer thickness, the Al mole fraction, and the GaAs well thickness. The results of simulation for the FET with 1.mu.m gate length show that the power gain and the power added efficiency are 10.2 dB and 36.3% at 12GHz, respectively. An extrapolation of the relation between current gain and unilateral gain yields a 17 GHz cutoff frequency and 43GHz maximum frequency of oscillation. The calculation of the current versus voltage characteristics show that the output power of the device is about 0.62W.

  • A Fabry-Perot resonator cavity antenna for Ku-band application is presented in this paper. The Fabry-Perot cavity is formed by a ground plane and a frequency selective surface (FSS) made of a circular hole array. The cavity resonance is excited by a single-feed microstrip patch located inside the cavity. The measured results show that the proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of approximately 13% ($VSWR{\leq}2$) and a 3-dB gain bandwidth of approximately 7%. The antenna produces a maximum gain of 18.5 dBi and good radiation patterns over the entire 3-dB gain bandwidth. The antenna's very thin profile, high directivity, and single excitation feed make it promising for use in wireless and satellite communication applications in a Ku-band frequency.

  • This paper presents a new gain scheduling speed controller of permanent magnet synchronous generators(PMSG) for MW-class direct-driven wind turbine systems. The proposed gain scheduling speed controller performs the speed tracking at more than one operating point, and the first-order torque observer estimates the turbine torque which is needed to precisely control the speed of PMSG. The proposed speed controller verifies that the PMSG can successfully follow the reference speed which is determined via the maximum power point tracking(MPPT) control and pitch control under turbulent wind conditions. The proposed speed control algorithm is simulated using Simulink and its performance is confirmed through comparison with the results by PI control method.

  • The advanced bilateral control algorithm, which can enlarge a reflected force by combining force reflection and compliance control, greatly enhances workability in teleoperation. In this scheme the maximum boundaries of a compliance controller and a force reflection gain guaranteeing stability and good task performance greatly depend upon characteristics of a slave arm, a master arm, and an environment. These characteristics, however, are generally unknown in teleoperation. It is, therefore, very difficult to determine such maximum boundary of the gain. The paper presented a novel method for design of an advanced bilateral controller. The factors affecting task performance and stability in the advanced bilateral controller were analyzed and a design guideline was presented. The neurofuzzy compliance model (NFCM)-based bilateral control proposed herein is an algorithm designed to automatically determine the suitable compliance for a given task or environment. The NFCM, composed of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and a rule-learning mechanism, is used as a compliance controller. The FLC generates compliant motions according to contact forces. The rule-learning mechanism, which is based upon the reinforcement learning algorithm, trains the rule-base of the FLC until the given task is done successfully. Since the scheme allows the use of large force reflection gain, it can assure good task performance. Moreover, the scheme does not require any priori knowledge on a slave arm dynamics, a slave arm controller and an environment, and thus, it can be easily applied to the control of any telerobot systems. Through a series of experiments effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified.

  • In this paper, a small size, $7{\times}6mm^2$, Low Noise Amplifier(LNA) using LTCC process was fabricated with multi-layer structure for 2.4GHz wireless LAN. The measured results demonstrate that the bandwidth is 130 MHz, and the operating frequency is from 2.39GHz to 2.52GHz. The power gain is above 7.3 dB in the operating frequency range and the gain flatness is 0.5 dB. The maximum S11 is -4 dB and the maximum S22 is -7.5 dB. The noise figure is less than 1.83 dB. The measured power gain, S11 and S22 were had poorer performance than the simulation results. The reason for this discrepancy is that the input and output matching was not performed exactly. However, the noise figure of the LTCC low noise amplifier is better than simulation result. It is found that it is possible to fabricate a LTCC low noise amplifier in a small size.

  • In multi-path wireless channels with time-variant delay profile, a mobile station measures the received signal strength and report it to network which performs network control function such as handover. In order to improve the maximum ratio combining (MRC) gain, it also should search the strongest signal paths and measure their time offsets fast and exactly. This paper proposes some methods of fast and exactly measuring the multi-path signal strength and time offset. Since the W-CDMA system adopts antenna diversity technique for the next generation high speed packet access (HSDPA) service, we derive the optimum design parameter values for the proposed methods through computer simulations under the HSDPA conditions o( low speed of mobile, of no power control, and of multi-path wireless environment with transmit and receive antenna diversity. Finally, we prove the validity of the proposed methods by showing the improvement of the bit error rate (BER) performance.

  • This paper presents a true-time delay (TTD) using a commercial $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS process for wideband phased-array antennas without the beam squint. The proposed TTD consists of four wideband distributed gain amplifiers (WDGAs), a 7-bit TTD circuit, and a 6-bit digital step attenuator (DSA) circuit. The T-type attenuator with a low-pass filter and the WDGAs are implemented for a low insertion loss error between the reference and time-delay states, and has a flat gain performance. The overall gain and return losses are >7 dB and >10 dB, respectively, at 2 GHz-18 GHz. The maximum time delay of 198 ps with a 1.56-ps step and the maximum attenuation of 31.5 dB with a 0.5-dB step are achieved at 2 GHz-18 GHz. The RMS time-delay and amplitude errors are <3 ps and <1 dB, respectively, at 2 GHz-18 GHz. An output P1 dB of <-0.5 dBm is achieved at 2 GHz-18 GHz. The chip size is $3.3{\times}1.6mm^2$, including pads, and the DC power consumption is 370 mW for a 3.3-V supply voltage.

  • In this paper a FET mixer is designed realized by small-signal S-parameter using microwave CAD, LINMIC + at Ku-band. The mixer has conversion gain 9.88dB at 14GHz RF, 1GHz IF, and + 1dBm LO imput. The maximum conversion gain is obtained 11.71dB at 1.1GHz. The result shows that the FET mixer does not need pre-and/or IF amplifier. The mixer maintains the desired conversion gain with low LO power level. The conversion gain of the mixer is higher than the available gain of a amplifier, which is experimentally verified.
