The effect of matrix phase (austenite, pearlite, martensite) on the low stress abrasion resistance in the chromium-carbide-type high Cr white iorn hardfacing weld deposites has been investigated. In order to examine matrix phase, a series of alloys with different matrix phase by changing the ratio of Cr/C system by heat treatment were employed. The alloys were deposited twice on a mild steel plate using self-shielding flux cored arc welding process. The low stress abrasion resistance of the alloys against sands was measured by the Dry Sand/Rubber Wheel Abrasion Test(RWAT). Even though formation of pearlite phase in the matrix showed higher hardness than that of austenite, there was no observable difference in wear resistance between the pearlite and austenite phase for the same amount of chromium-carbide in the matrix. On the other hand, the formation of martensitic phase,, from heat treated austenitic alloys (high content of Cr), enhanced wear resistance due to its fine secondary precipitates.
Conidial adhesion and appressorium formation of Magnaporthe oryzae on the rice surface are important early events in the infection process. As an initiative step to understand the mechanisms underlying these cellular processes at a biochemical level, the effect of a human fibronectin antibody (HFA) and RGD peptides on conidial adhesion and appressorium formation was evaluated. HFA inhibited conidial adhesion and appressorium formation in a dosage-dependent manner. RGD peptides also inhibited these cellular events. Conidial adhesion and appressorium formation inhibited by RGD peptides were restored by chemicals involved in the cyclic AMP-dependent signaling pathway. These results suggest that extracellular matrix proteins might be involved in conidial adhesion and appressorium formation through integrin-like receptor mediation and modulation of cAMP-dependent signaling in the cells.

The incidence of melioidosis cases caused by the gram-negative pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei (BP) is seeing an increasing trend that has spread beyond its previously known endemic regions. Biofilms produced by BP have been associated with antimicrobial therapy limitation and relapse melioidosis, thus making it urgently necessary to understand the mechanisms of biofilm formation and their role in BP biology. Microbial cells aggregate and enclose within a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) to form biofilm. The transition mechanism of bacterial cells from planktonic state to initiate biofilm formation, which involves the formation of surface attachment microcolonies and the maturation of the biofilm matrix, is a dynamic and complex process. Despite the emerging findings on the biofilm formation process, systemic knowledge on the molecular mechanisms of biofilm formation in BP remains fractured. This review provides insights into the signaling systems, matrix composition, and the biosynthesis regulation of EPSs (exopolysaccharide, eDNA and proteins) that facilitate the formation of biofilms in order to present an overview of our current knowledge and the questions that remain regarding BP biofilms.
In this paper, a practical controller for a group of USVs is proposed in order to avoid matrix inversion problems in computation. Using nonlinear mapping, a formation composed of nonholonomic agents can be stabilized even when the formation is stationary. Since there is no matrix inversion in computing the control law, the computation complexity can be resolved. A controller for stabilizing the formation errors in the presence of model uncertainty is considered using the Lyapunov redesign method. The asymptotic stability of the formation errors is shown. It is also shown that the proposed controller can be applied to guide a formation to a different shape without modification.

Manufacturing cell formation is one of the most important problems faced in designing cellular manufacturing systems. The purpose of this study is to design effective manufacturing cell systems by developing a method which forms machines/parts into optimal machine cells/part families. The 0-1 data matrix structure is used to form a basis for manufacturing cell formation. In this paper, we propose a CE method to reorder the 0-1 data matrix for manufacturing cell formation. The resulting solutions are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the CE method.
To better define the relationship between dermal regeneration and wound contraction and scar formation, the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) loaded in collagen sponge matrix on the fibroblast cell proliferation rate and the dermal mechanical strength were investigated. Collagen sponges with acid-soluble fraction of pig skin were prepared and incorporated with EGF at 0, 4, and 8 $\mu$g/1.7 $cm^{2}$. Dermal fibroblasts were cultured to 80$\%$ confluence using DMEM, treated with the samples submerged, and the cell viability was estimated using MTT assay. A deep, $2^{nd}$ degree- burn of diameter 1 cm was prepared on the rabbit ear and the tested dressings were applied twice during the 15-day, post burn period. The processes of re-epithelialization and dermal regeneration were investigated until the complete wound closure day and histological analysis was performed with H-E staining. EGF increased the fibroblast cell proliferation rate. The histology showed well developed, weave-like collagen bundles and fibroblasts in EGF-treated wounds while open wounds showed irregular collagen bundles and impaired fibroblast growth. The breaking strength (944.1 $\pm$ 35.6 vs. 411.5 $\pm$ 57.0 Fmax, $gmm^{-2}$) and skin resilience (11.3 $\pm$ 1.4 vs. 6.5 $\pm$ 0.6 mJ/$mm^{2}$) were significantly increased with EGFtreated wounds as compared with open wounds, suggesting that EGF enhanced the dermal matrix formation and improved the wound mechanical strength. In conclusion, EGF-improved dermal matrix formation is related with a lower wound contraction rate. The impaired dermal regeneration observed in the open wounds could contribute to the formation of wound contraction and scar tissue development. An extraneous supply of EGF in the collagen dressing on deep, $2^{nd}$ degree-burns enhanced the dermal matrix formation.

Iron-based metal matrix composites have been recently investigated for the use of inexpensive abrasion resistance material. This paper carried out to investigate the in-situ reaction effects on the microstructural characteristics and the formation mechanism of tungsten carbides in a white cast iron matrix. The specimens of Fe-3.2%C-2.8%Si alloy cast-bonded with tungsten wire were cast in the metal mold and isothermally heat treated at $950^{\circ}C$ up to 48 hours. The typical microstructure of heat treated specimens showed the reaction layer of WC at the interface of tungsten wire and the carbon depletion zone between the WC layer and the matrix. During the formation of WC layer, if the carbon supply is insufficient due to the decarburization of matrix or the isolation of matrix by cast-bonded W wires, the reaction layer develops coarse hexagonal crystalline WC. From the microstructural investigation, it was found that the volume of WC layer and the carbon depletion zone increased linearly with the isothermal heat treating time. This results supported that the formation rate of WC in the white cast iron matrix is controlled by the interfacial reaction with a constant reaction rate.

Self Organizing Map (SOM) is a neural network that is effective in classifying patterns that form the feature map by extracting characteristics of the input data. In this study, we propose an algorithm to determine the cell formation and the machine layout within the cell for the cell formation problem with operation sequence using the SOM. In the proposed algorithm, the output layer of the SOM is a one-dimensional structure, and the SOM is applied to the parts and the machine in two steps. The initial cell is formed when the formed clusters is grouped largely by the utilization of the machine within the cell. At this stage, machine cell are formed. The next step is to create a flow matrix of the all machine that calculates the frequency of consecutive forward movement for the machine. The machine layout order in each machine cell is determined based on this flow matrix so that the machine operation sequence is most reflected. The final step is to optimize the overall machine and parts to increase machine layout efficiency. As a result, the final cell is formed and the machine layout within the cell is determined. The proposed algorithm was tested on well-known cell formation problems with operation sequence shown in previous papers. The proposed algorithm has better performance than the other algorithms.

Numbers of matrix- and analyte-derived ions and their sum in matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) of a peptide were measured using 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) as matrix. As for MALDI with ${\alpha}$-cyano-4-hydroxy cinnamic acid as matrix, the sum was independent of the peptide concentration in the solid sample, or was the same as that of pure DHB. This suggested that the matrix ion was the primary ion and that the peptide ion was generated by matrix-to-peptide proton transfer. Experimental ionization efficiencies of $10^{-5}-10^{-4}$ for peptides and $10^{-8}-10^{-7}$ for matrices are far smaller than $10^{-3}-10^{-1}$ for peptides and $10^{-5}-10^{-3}$ for matrices speculated by Hillenkamp and Karas. Number of gas-phase ions generated by MALDI was unaffected by laser wavelength or pulse energy. This suggests that the main role of photo-absorption in MALDI is not in generating ions via a multi-photon process but in ablating materials in a solid sample to the gas phase.

The authors has observed the effect of X-ray irradiation on the dentin matrix formation of the albino rat fetuses. The lower abdomen of the pregnant ratswere exposed to X-ray on the 9 1/2th day of gestation, respectively 150, 250 and 350 rads. The fetuses of the right sides of the same pregnant rats which were not exposed to X-ray were as controls. The results were as follows: 1) In the 150 rads irradiated fetuses, predentin formation was identical with control groups, but the arrangement of odontoblasts was distorted, subodontoblastic layer was condesed with pulp cells and blood capillaries were enlarged. 2) In the 250 rads irradiation, dentin matrix was imperfact or osteodentin was occured. Short columnar or cuboidal odontoblasts were presented and pulp cells were dispersed. Blood capillaries were cogested. 3) 350 rads irradiated fetuses showed osteodentin matrix and numerous degenerated odontoblasts. Their dental papilla showed reticular atrophy and enlarged capillary.
