Concept and model of multiplication is not single. Concepts of multiplication can be classified into three cases: repeated addition, times idea, pairs set. Models of multiplication can be classified into four cases: measurement, rectangular pattern, combinatorial problem, number line. Among diverse cases of multiplication's concept and model, which case does elementary mathematics education lay stress on? This question is a controvertible didactical point. In this thesis, (1) mathematical and didactical analysis of multiplication's concept and model is performed, (2) a concrete program of teaching multiplication which is based on times idea is contrived, (3) With this new program, the teaching experiment is performed and its result is analyzed. Through this study, I obtained the following results and suggestions. First, the degree of testee's understanding of times idea is not high. Secondly, a sort of test problem which asks the testee to find times value is more easy than the one to find multiplicative resulting value. Thirdly, combinatorial problem can be handled as an application of multiplication. Fourthly, the degree of testee's understanding of repeated addition is high. In conclusion, I observe the fact that this new program which is based on times idea could be a alternative program of teaching multiplication which could complement the traditional method.

The purpose of this study was to analysis how the elements of character are reflected in the 3rd and 4th grade elementary mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised curriculum. This study focused on the elements of character in the 3rd and 4th grade mathematics textbooks. The researchers analyzed the elements of character in the students' mathematics textbooks and teacher's guide books. In particular, they analyzed how those elements of character are reflected in those books. Findings of this study are as follows. First of all, the elements of character were founded in the most of units on the 3rd and 4th grade mathematics textbooks, but they were biased to the specific elements of character. Second, the resources using related with character vary in the textbooks. As methods of character education, connections of elements of character with mathematical concepts, broader view of the world, or problem solving are appeared. From the results of the research, we suggest the followings. We need to set the teacher's roles in character education. Mathematics textbooks should include various elements of character for effective character education. In addition to development of quality materials for character education in mathematics education, teacher education programs should include character education in mathematics education.
The study aimed to investigate the characteristics of algebraic thinking of the mathematically gifted students and search for how to teach algebraic thinking. Research subjects in this study included 93 students who applied for a science gifted education center affiliated with a university in 2015 and previously experienced gifted education. Students' responses on an algebraic item of a creative thinking test in mathematics, which was given as screening process for admission were collected as data. A framework of algebraic thinking factors were extracted from literature review and utilized for data analysis. It was found that students showed difficulty in quantitative reasoning between two quantities and tendency to find solutions regarding equations as problem solving tools. In this process, students tended to concentrate variables on unknown place holders and to had difficulty understanding various meanings of variables. Some of students generated errors about algebraic concepts. In conclusions, it is recommended that functional thinking including such as generalizing and reasoning the relation among changing quantities is extended, procedural as well as structural aspects of algebraic expressions are emphasized, various situations to learn variables are given, and activities constructing variables on their own are strengthened for improving gifted students' learning and teaching algebra.

This paper reviews and analyzes the conceptions of science achievement in the United States and Korean reform documents, including those on science content standards(NSES, Porject 2061, and Korean 7th science curriculum), performance standards(New Standards, and Survey of Ecucational Achievement in Korean Elementary and Secondary Schools), and large-scale assessment framworks(1996 NAEP, TIMSS, The National Assessment of Science Inqury Abilities, The National Assessment of Science Knowledge, and The National Assessment of Affective Characteristics related to Science). The analysis of these documents indicates that there is an overall agreement on the conceptions of science achievement. The documents consistently emphasize high achievement in terms of knowledge and abilities in scientific, technological, social, and environmental perspectives. In addition, these documents define science achievement at different developmental levels and at certain depths of knowledge and abilities for all students. Despite the overall agreement, there are also noticeable variations among the documents because of different contexts and purposes. There is a difference in the balance of representations or emphases among content and process standards in the documents. The conceptions of science achievement in the Korean documents are not as comprehensive or inclusive as those in the United States documents. There is no representation of the mathematical world, the nature of science, historical perspectives, unifying concepts, or scientific communication. From these results, two conclusions are drawn. First, more coherent conceptions of science achievement are needed for common understanding among educators and the public. Second, efforts are needed for developing more comprehensive and inclusive conceptions of science achievement in Korea.
The pseudo-biologic objective function has been designed for the IMRT optimization. The RTP Tool Box (RTB) was used for this study. The pseudo-biologic function is similar to the biological objective function in mathematical shape, but uses physical parameters. The concepts of the TCI (Target Coverage Index) and the OSI (Organ Score Index) have been introduced for the target and the normal organs, respectively. The pseudo-biologic objective function s has been defined using these TCI and OSI's. The OSI's from the pseudo-biological function showed better results than from the physical functions, while TCI's showed similar tendency. These results revealed the feasibility of the pseudo-biologic function as an IMRT objective function.

This study analyzes divisor and multiple in elementary school mathematics textbooks published according to the first to the 7th curriculum, in a view point of the didactic transposition theory. In the first and second textbooks, the divisor and the multiple are taught in the chapter whose subject is on the calculations of the fractions. In the third and fourth textbooks, divisor and multiple became an independent chapter but instructed with the concept of set theory. In the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh textbooks, not only divisor multiple was educated as an independent chapter but also began to be instructed without any conjunction with set theory or a fractions. Especially, in the seventh textbook, the understanding through activities of students itself are strongly emphasized. The analysis on the each curriculum periods shows that the divisor and the multiple and the reduction of a fractions to the lowest terms and to a common denominator are treated at the same period. Learning activity elements are increase steadily as the textbooks and the mathematical systems are revised. The following conclusion can be deduced based on the textbook analysis and discussion for each curriculum periods. First, loaming instruction method also developed systematically with time. Second, teaching method of the divisor and multiple has been sophisticated during the 1st to 7th curriculum textbooks. And the variation of the teaching sequences of the divisor and multiple is identified. Third, we must present concrete models in real life and construct textbooks for students to abstract the concepts by themselves. Fourth, it is necessary to develop some didactics for students' contextualization and personalization of the greatest common divisor and least common multiple. Fifth, the 7th curriculum textbooks emphasize inquiries in real life which teaming activities by the student himself or herself.
New Zealand had reformed their national curriculum with competence and are applying the revised curriculum. As the 2015 revised national curriculum is clothed with competency-based curriculum, New Zealand may have important implications for the study of the Korean revised curriculum. In this study, we examine characteristics of the education system and the national curriculum in New Zealand. In addition, we analyze the standards into the New Zealand national curriculum in terms of 'curriculum connectivity' that is one of important curriculum criteria for improving the quality of education. For this, we look an overview of the relation between the New Zealand curriculum and NCEA, which is the core of the student-centered education system in New Zealand, and analyze the correspondence between the New Zealand curriculum and the Korean curriculum. And we establish analysis framework of curriculum connectivity based on these comparison analysis contents, and analyze Korean mathematics standards with corresponding levels from among the New Zealand mathematics curriculum. According to the results of this study, the New Zealand curriculum includes the most of standards which Korean high school students who want to enter university of natural sciences of engineering need to require. In addition, the New Zealand curriculum highlights statistical research activities for developing problem-solving ability in real life. From perspective of curriculum connectivity, 'in-depth contents' adding on to repeating mathematical concepts or contents are included in the New Zealand curriculum.

The act of design in landscape architecture consists of a concept within a designer's mind, technical representations, and finally, a process of construction. In the 4th Industrial Revolution, the design process is facing many changes due to the rapid development of computer technology and the IT ecosystem. Computer technology was initially developed for simple functions, such as mathematical calculation and graphic representation. However, after the spread of Personal Computers, starting with IBM and Macintosh, programming languages and hardware rapidly developed, algorithms and applications became specialized, and the purpose of using computers became very diverse. This study diagnoses issues concerning the functions and roles that new design methods, such as computational design, parametric design, and algorithmic design, can play in landscape architecture based on changes in the digital society. The study focused on the design methodology using parametric technology, which has recently received the most attention. First, the basis for discussion was developed by examining the main concepts and characteristics of parametric design in modern landscape architecture. Prior research on the use of parametric design in landscape architecture was analyzed, as were the case studies conducted by landscape design firms. As a result, it was confirmed that parametric design has not been sufficiently discussed in terms of the number and diversity of studies compared to other techniques investigated by landscape design firms. Finally, based on the discussion, the study examined specific cases and future possibilities of the parametric design in landscape architecture.

In the last decade, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) as a new technology has been applied with traditional Computer-aided design implementations in an increasing number of architecture, engineering, and construction projects and applications. Its employment alongside construction management, can be a valuable tool in helping move these activities and projects forward in a more efficient and time-effective manner. The traditional stakeholders, i.e., Owner, A/E and the Contractor are involved in this BIM system that is used in almost every activity of construction projects, such as design, cost estimate and scheduling. This article extracts major features of the application of BIM from perspective of participating BIM components, along with the different phrases, and applies to them a logistic analysis using a fuzzy performance tree, quantifying these phrases to judge the effectiveness of the BIM techniques employed. That is to say, these fuzzy performance trees with fuzzy logic concepts can properly translate the linguistic rating into numeric expressions, and are thus employed in evaluating the influence of BIM applications as a mathematical process. The rotational fuzzy models are used to represent the membership functions of the performance values and their corresponding weights. Illustrations of the use of this fuzzy BIM performance tree are presented in the study for the uninitiated users. The results of these processes are an evaluation of BIM project performance as highly positive. The quantification of the performance ratings for the individual factors is a significant contributor to this assessment, capable of parsing vernacular language into numerical data for a more accurate and precise use in performance analysis. It is hoped that fuzzy performance trees and fuzzy set analysis can be used as a tool for the quality and risk analysis for other construction techniques in the future. Baldwin's rotational models are used to represent the membership functions of the fuzzy sets. Three scenarios are presented using fuzzy MEAN, AND and OR gates from the lowest to intermediate levels of the tree, and fuzzy SUM gate to relate the intermediate level to the top component of the tree, i.e., BIM application final performance. The use of fuzzy MEAN for lower levels and fuzzy SUM gates to reach the top level suggests the most realistic and accurate results. The methodology (fuzzy performance tree) described in this paper is appropriate to implement in today's construction industry when limited objective data is presented and it is heavily relied on experts' subjective judgment.
In this study, I investigated prospective mathematics teachers' perceptions of activities using Wax-paper, a hands-on material (manipulatives), and GeoGebra, a technological tool, in teaching quadratic curves. Twenty prospective mathematics teachers in the Mathematics Education Department of a local university participated in a survey on their perception of the use of hands-on materials and technological tools in teaching quadratic curves. According to the results of this study, prospective mathematics teachers generally preferred the use of technological tools for learning and teaching quadratic curves. Additionally, mathematics teachers thought that the tool helped students develop intuitive thinking through visualizing quadratic curves, enabling the exploration of various mathematical properties, assisting the comprehension of various concepts, and increasing students' interest levels. However, they were concerned about the immature use of technological tools by students or teachers, and recognized that the advantages and disadvantages of using hands-on material and technological tools were complementary. Based on these findings, it is suggested that hands-on material and technological tools should be used complementally in mathematics classes, and the development and dissemination of class materials that are not affected by students' or teachers' ability to use technological tools is important.
