This study was conducted to determine which variables of interest could be used to predict the development of infants. The variables of interest in this study were demographic variables regarding to the infants and mothers, maternal knowledge of infant development, maternal self-efficacy, maternal parenting stress, and infant development. The participants consisted of 252 infant-mother pairs and all infants included in this study were 15 months to 36 months of age. The development of Infants was assessed by classroom teachers. Data regarding the mothers’' demographic information, maternal knowledge of infant development, maternal self-efficacy, and maternal stress were gathered by maternal self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t tests, and regression analyses. The primary results demonstrated that family income, maternal infant knowledge, and maternal parenting stress were predictive of the infant development. In addition, different patterns in the results of the stepwise multiple regression were observed among the infant’'s of different age. Implications for research and practice were discussed along with the results of study.
This study explores the relationship of mother's perceptions on child development, achievement pressure and parenting stress. The participants were 275 mothers of preschool-age children in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do area. The results were as follows. Maternal perception of child development, achievement pressure and parenting stress were significantly different according to gender, birth order of the child and the employment status of the mother. Maternal perception of child development, achievement pressure and parenting stress were related to each variable. The results of the regression analysis indicated that the maternal perception of child development and achievement pressure were significant variables in predicting the parenting stress of mothers.
This study examined the relationship between maternal employment, maternal job characteristics, spousal support and parenting stress, using a sample of 502 mothers (207 employed and 295 nonemployed mothers) who had 1st and 2nd grade children. The participants completed a set of questionnaires. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation, simple regression analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Our results indicated that maternal employment was not significantly related to parenting stress. It was also found that employed mothers experienced less parenting stress when they perceived greater job satisfaction and higher spousal support. Lastly, spousal support moderated the impact of job satisfaction on employed mothers' parenting stress, indicating that the relationship between job satisfaction and parenting stress was stronger for the high spousal support group than for the low spousal support group.
The purpose of this study was to explore the general tendencies of maternal parenting stress, coping style, marital satisfaction and preschool children's withdrawal behavior as well as to investigate the effects of maternal parenting stress, coping style, and marital satisfaction on preschool children's withdrawal behavior. The participants involved 86 mothers of preschoolers and their teachers from one day care center and two kindergartens in Seoul and Gyeong-gi province. Maternal parenting stress, coping style and marital satisfaction were assessed by the mothers' self-reports, whereas the preschool children's withdrawal behavior was assessed by the teacher's report. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, t-test and multiple regressions. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS ver. 15.0. The major findings were summarized as follows: There were no differences between maternal parenting stress, coping style and marital satisfaction between mothers of boys and girls. Further, there were differences in preschool children's withdrawal behavior between boys and girls; girls showed more withdrawal behaviors than boys. Typical stress due to parenting, outsider's help coping style and marital satisfaction explained the withdrawal behavior of preschool children. As the level of typical stress increase in mothers, preschool children showed increased withdrawal behavior. Moreover, as mothers used fewer outsider's help coping style and had lower marital satisfaction, their preschool children's showed increased withdrawal behavior. In conclusion, maternal parenting stress, coping style and marital satisfaction significantly influence on preschool children's withdrawal behavior.
The purposes of this study were to explore the differences in maternal parenting behaviors and mothers' family stress by children's sex and parental divorce and to investigate the relationships of maternal parenting behaviors with mothers' family stress in low income families. Participants of this study were 166 children of 4 to 6 grades and their mothers from low income divorced and intact families. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, two-way ANOVAs, Pearson's correlations. The result were as follows: Girls perceived more maternal warmth than boys in divorce families, but boys perceived more maternal warmth than girls in intact families. Boys perceived more maternal supervision than girls in intact and divorced families. Mother of divorced families had more childrearing stress than mothers of intact familes. In divorced families, children whose mothers had high levels of childrearing stress perceived less maternal warmth and supervision, and children whose mothers had high levels of work-family conflicts perceived less maternal warmth. In intact families, children whose mothers had high levels of economic stress perceived less maternal supervision.
Objective: This study investigated the double mediating effects of maternal and paternal parenting stress and the regularity of children's daily routines in the association between maternal and paternal parenting time and children's self-regulation. Methods: A total of 235 preschool children aged 4-5 years and their mothers and fathers participated in the study. Parenting time, parenting stress, and children's self-regulation were assessed using both mothers' and fathers' reports, but the regularity of daily routines was assessed using mothers' reports only. The data was analyzed using SEM in Mplus 8.2. Results: Mothers' and fathers' parenting stress appeared to have cross-spousal mediated effects of their parenting time on children's self-regulation. Higher levels of mothers' and fathers' parenting time predicted higher levels of children's self-regulation through only a lower level of mothers' parenting stress and a higher level of the regularity of daily routines. Conclusion/Implications: Findings indicated that parents' parenting time played a significant protective factor in reducing parenting stress and increasing the regularity of daily routines among family members. This cross-spousal influence on parenting process can inform the development of prevention programs and parenting education to promote self-regulation skills among preschool children.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing parenting stress in primiparas. Method: The participants in this study were 198 primiparas of infants aged 1-6 months who visited well baby clinics in 5 hospitals. The data were collected from April 15 to June 15, 2003. Results: The mean score for parenting stress was 2.4 of a possible 5 and thus considered average. The score for parenting stress was significantly correlated with the level of maternal perception of the infant and the level of social support. The score for parenting stress was significantly different according to the education level of the primiparas and prenatal management. For the primiparas, social support($20\%$) and maternal perception of the infant($9\%$) were significant predictors explaining parenting stress. Conclusions: Nursing interventions to improve maternal perception of the infant and increase social support should be provided for primiparas in order to reduce parenting stress.
The purpose of this study is to examine the longitudinal causal relationships between maternal parenting stress and parenting attitudes. Relevant data from mothers with infants aged from 2 to 4 years of age was gathered from the Panel Study of Korean Children were analyzed by means of Latent Growth Modeling. The findings are as follows, First, levels of parenting stress increased whereas the extent of positive parenting attitudes decreased as children grow older. Second, the initial value of parenting stress was observed to have a negative effect on the initial value of positive parenting attitudes. Third, those mothers who generally have faster speeds of increasing parenting stress tend to have faster speeds of decreases in positive parenting attitudes. What this study clearly revealed is that the positive parenting attitudes of mothers with infants tend to improve when the mothers try to efficiently deal with their parenting stress by either acquiring appropriate parenting knowledge or receiving support from their families and communities.
The purpose of this research is to delineate the effect of maternal variables of the children's depression. Such variables as the mother's age, her education level and maternal parenting stress have been chosen for the analysis. The sample subject were 659 pairs of fifth/sixth grade of elementary school and first/second grade of middle school and their mothers. The data were analyzed frequency, percentage, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The major findings of the research are as follows : First, the children's depression is significantly related to mother's education level but the children's depression is not significantly related to mother's age. Second, parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and learning expectation is significantly related to children's depression. Third, the result of step multiple regression analysis on the effects of the maternal variables to the children's depression indicates that maternal parenting stress related to temperament, relationship and mother education level are the significant contributing factor. All in all, the maternal variables account for 7% of the children's depression score.
The purpose of this study was to develop a model for preschool children's self regulation by examining the effects of maternal parenting variables on preschool children's self regulation. The subjects were 1219 mothers of 4- to 6-year-old preschool children attending kindergarten or child care centers located in Seoul and Kyunggi Province, Korea. For data analysis, exploratory factor analysis(EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) were applied to the survey data in the first phase and structural equation modeling(SEM) analysis in the second phase. The major results of this study were as follows: maternal parenting stress and maternal behavior were the most direct influential variables on preschool children's self-regulation. Moreover, maternal parenting efficacy was indirectly mediated through maternal behavior.
