Improvement of Grommet Work Safety by Comparision of Domestic and Foreign Guidelines (국내외 지침 비교를 통한 Grommet 작업 안전성 향상 방안 연구)

  • The number of deaths caused by power crane accidents continues to decline. Nevertheless, more than 50 people die each year due to these accidents. Various types of slings, such as wire rope sling, chain sling, belt sling, and grommet, are used in industries, depending on the characteristics of the work involved. To reduce the number of accidents involving these slings, the formulation of technical measures and education of workers are necessary. This study compares and analyzes local and international guidelines as well as those found in manufacturer manuals in relation to grommets, which are widely used in shipyards and construction sites. Moreover, measures for improving the safety of work using grommet are reviewed. This paper further proposes the revision of the technical guidelines of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency such that the information directly affecting the safety of work involving grommets is included. By clarifying the guidelines that manufacturers provide in their manuals, accident prevention through worker awareness is anticipated in the future.

Tracking of ARPA Radar Signals Based on UK-PDAF and Fusion with AIS Data

  • To maintain the existing systems of ships and introduce autonomous operation technology, it is necessary to improve situational awareness through the sensor fusion of the automatic identification system (AIS) and automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA), which are installed sensors. This study proposes an algorithm for determining whether AIS and ARPA signals are sent to the same ship in real time. To minimize the number of errors caused by the time series and abnormal phenomena of heterogeneous signals, a tracking method based on the combination of the unscented Kalman filter and probabilistic data association filter is performed on ARPA radar signals, and a position prediction method is applied to AIS signals. Especially, the proposed algorithm determines whether the signal is for the same vessel by comparing motion-related components among data of heterogeneous signals to which the corresponding method is applied. Finally, a measurement test is conducted on a training ship. In this process, the proposed algorithm is validated using the AIS and ARPA signal data received by the voyage data recorder for the same ship. In addition, the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the test results with those obtained from raw data. Therefore, it is recommended to use a sensor fusion algorithm that considers the characteristics of sensors to improve the situational awareness accuracy of existing ship systems.

Corrosion Resistance Evaluation of Aluminum Thermal Spray Coated AA5083-H321 (알루미늄 열용사 코팅된 AA5083-H321의 내식성 평가)

  • In this study, anti-corrosion effect was investigated through various electrochemical experiments after applying Al thermal spraying technology to AA5083-H321. Open circuit potential and anodic polarization curves were analyzed through electrochemical experiments in natural seawater. The shape of the surface was observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a 3D microscope before and after the experiment. Component and crystal structure were analyzed through EDS and XRD. As a result, the surface roughness of AA5083-H321 and the Al thermal sprayed coating layer increased due to surface damage caused by anodic dissolution reaction during the anodic polarization experiment. The corrosion rate of AA5083-H321 was relatively low because the Al thermal spray coating layer contained structural defects such as pores and crevices. Nevertheless, the open circuit potential of the Al thermal spray coating layer in natural seawater was measured about 0.2 V lower than that of AA5083-H321. Thus, a sacrificial anode protection effect can be expected.

Prediction of Motion State of a Docking Small Planing Ship using Artificial Neural Network

  • Automatic docking of small planing ship is a critical aspect of maritime operations, requiring accurate prediction of motion states to ensure safe and efficient maneuvers. This study investigates the use of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to predict motion state of a small planing ship to enhance navigation automation in port environments. To achieve this, simulation tests were conducted to control a small planing ship while docking at various heading angles in calm water and in waves. Comprehensive analysis of the ANN-based predictive model was conducted by training and validation using data from various docking situations to improve its ability to accurately capture motion characteristics of a small planing ship. The trained ANN model was used to predict the motion state of the small planning ship based on any initial motion state. Results showed that the small planing ship could dock smoothly in both calm water and waves conditions, confirming the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method for prediction. Moreover, the ANN-based prediction model can adjust the dynamic model of the small planing ship to adapt in real-time and enhance the robustness of an automatic positioning system. This study contributes to the ongoing development of automated navigation systems and facilitates safer and more efficient maritime transport operations.

Effect of Phase Transformation Behavior of Electroless Nickel Plating Layer on Corrosion and Cavitation-Erosion with Heat Treatment (열처리에 따른 무전해 니켈 도금 층의 상변태 거동이 부식과 캐비테이션 침식에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate corrosion and cavitation-erosion characteristics of the electroless nickel plating layer with heat treatment. The crystallization temperature of the electroless nickel plating layer was about 410 ℃. The phase transformation energy was confirmed to be 12.66 J/g. With increasing heat treatment temperature, the amorphous electroless nickel plating layer gradually changed to crystalline Ni and Ni3P. At the same time, the crystal grain size was also increased. Additionally, when heat treatment was performed at a temperature above 400 ℃, NiO phase was observed due to oxidation phenomenon. As a result of the electrochemical polarization experiment, the corrosion resistance of the heat-treated electroless nickel plating layers was superior to that of the as-deposited plating layer. This was because crystal grains became larger and grain boundaries decreased during heat treatment. The cavitation-erosion resistance of heat-treated plating layers tended to be superior to that of as-deposited plating layers due to increased microhardness.

A Study on the Installation of SCR System for Generator Diesel Engine of Existing Ship (기존 선박의 디젤발전기용 SCR 시스템 설치에 관한 연구)

  • The IMO MEPC has been increasingly strengthening the emission standard for marine environment protection. In particular, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of all ocean-going ships built from 2016 will be required to comply with the Tier-III regulation. In this study, a vanadia based SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system developed for ship application was installed on a diesel engine for power generation of the training ship T/S SAENURI in Mokpo National Maritime University. For the present study, the exhaust pipeline of the generator diesel engine was modified to fit the urea SCR system. This study investigated the NOx reduction performance according to the two kind of injection method of urea solution (40%): Auto mode through the PLC (Programable Logic Control) and Manual mode. We were able to find the ammonia slip conditions when in manual mode method. So, the optimal urea injection quantity can be controlled at each engine load (25, 35, 50%) condition. It was achieved 80% reduction on nitrogen oxide. Furthermore, we found that the NOx reduction performance was better with the load up-down (while down to 25% from 50%) than the load down-up (while up to 50% from 25%) test.

  • Route Design & TSS(Traffic Separation Scheme} establishment are often used to improve the maritime traffic safety in the heavily congested traffic area. There are several domestic and international route design guidelines, but there is no guideline of TSS design As a result, TSS is usually designed based on the subjective opinions of professionals in this field. Until now, there exist a few papers dealing with the effects of TSS on the reduction of maritime accidents, however, it is hard to find a paper on the design guidelines of TSS. In this paper, TSS design guidelines are proposed based on the quantitative assessment of navigational difficulty felt by mariners, which is expected to improve navigational safety of vessels in congested area.

A Study on the Improvement of Performance for Centralized Air Conditioning System by Using Air-Cooled Air Conditioner - The Case of Mokpo National Maritime University - (공랭식 에어컨을 이용한 중앙 집중 공조시스템의 성능 개선에 관한 연구 - 실습선 새누리호를 중심으로 -)

  • In this study, distributed the ship's Centralized Air Conditioning System the way an individual to replace the air conditioning system by using Air-cooled air conditioner. Research results, Individually separated air conditioning system complement the heat source control and thermal efficiency problems and improves the efficiency of the device was confirmed. In addition, under the same conditions refrigeration capacity and coefficient of performance of the device, an average of about 3 %, 23 ~ 26 %, higher, Chilled Water Plants Compressor power consumption is about 12 % lower. Also while heating under the same conditions, power consumption is about 33.5 % lower. Therefore Individually Separated Air Conditioning System greatly contributed to the improved performance of the device and living spaces for comfortable temperature and humidity control as well as heating source could be obtained.

  • SHS(Ship-Handling Simulator) is virtual generation of vessel traffic situation under various environmental conditions. Recent, with the introduction of MSA(Maritime Safety Audit), SHS is being used as a key facility to determine the safety of navigation. However, the current audit techniques specified in the implementation guidance of MSA have been prepared by generalizing common procedures and evaluation methods used by institutions operating simulator systems. Therefore, they need to be reviewed and supplemented. This study analyzed the adequacy of current audit techniques based on the limitations and problems, then suggested the advanced scheme of SHS such as standardization of ship models, standard manoeuvring and evaluation method. The results of this research will contribute to improving the quantification and reliability of audit techniques used in the MSA as well as upgrading of the simulator system.

A Study on Improvement of KMA WE-FAX Service (한국기상청 영역기상방송(WE-FAX) 서비스 개선에 관한 연구)

  • Even though KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) has been doing WE-FAX service in past 40 years, most of korean ship's officers use Japan/USA WE-FAX instead of KMA WE-FAX during passage in the NW Pacific. In this regards, the authors carry out the research on the improvement of KMA WE-FAX service, examining the officers's opinions to KMA WE-FAX service along with comparing Korea, Japan & USA synoptic weather charts. As a result, it is suggested that (1) Have KMA WE-FAX service known to the officers in the course of education and training, (2) Persuade ocean-going ships to participate VOS to provide more accurate weather charts. (3) Provide additional weather charts such as Wave analysis, Surface forecast and put useful weather informations on weather charts to enhance navigational safety.
