  • The aim of this study was to measure and compare polyphenol content, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of six halophytes (Limonium tetragonum, Suaeda glauca, Suaeda japonica, Salicornia europaea, Triglochin maritimum, and Sonchus brachyotus). Depending on the total polyphenol content, the plants were categorized into two groups: (1) a high total polyphenol content group that included L. tetragonum, S. brachyotus, and S. europaea, and, (2) a low total polyphenol content group consisting of S. glauca, T. maritima, and S. japonica. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays, and by measuring ROS. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by measuring NO and $PGE_2$. L. tetragonum and S. brachyotus, that have high polyphenol content, also showed strong antioxidant activity. In addition, L. tetragonum, S. brachyotus, and S. europaea showed good anti-inflammatory activity. Consequently, the total polyphenol content was thought to be related to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore, S. brachyotus and L. tetragonum are good candidates for use in pharmaceuticals and functional foods.

  • Allergy, meaning 'heightened reactivity' of a host on being exposed to an antigen, is an immediate reaction which included anaphylaxis following contact with an antigen. An anaphylatic reaction is caused by the release of pharmacological mediators, like histamine, from mast cells. The potential anti-allergic activities of 27 seaweed and 19 salt marsh extracts collected from the coast of Korea were tested against the inhibition of histamine release in rat peritoneal mast cells (RPMCs). Among them, three salt marsh plants (Persicaria lapathifolia, Ixeris tamagawaensis, and Salsola komarovil) significantly showed more than 75% of inhibition of the histamine release at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$, and also three salt marsh (Messerschmidia sibirica, Rosa rugosa, and Portulaca oleraceae) and three seaweed (Colpomenia bullosa, Derbesia marina, and Sargassum thunbergil) extracts exhibited moderately inhibition effects when compared to the control.

  • Background: Halophyte plant (HPs), a salt-resistant flora, has been reported to provide several health benefits, but the knowledge of its cosmeceutical potential is still ambiguous. Here, 70% ethanol extracts of 22 HPs collected from along the coast of South Korea were investigated for their potentials of antioxidant, anti-aging, and whitening properties for use as materials in novel cosmeceuticals. Methods: Antioxidant activities were determined by DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-pricrylhydrazyl) free radical and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays, and skin aging-related enzyme activities (anti-elastase, anti-collagenase, anti-hyaluronidase, and anti-tyrosinase) were evaluated by using the spectrophotometric method. Results: Among the 22 HPs, we found that Ischaemum antephoroides f. coreana and Atriplex gmelinii extracts presented the strongest scavenging effects against DPPH free radical and hydrogen peroxide, respectively. Our finding additionally suggested that Salicornia europaea extract might provide a major source of anti-elastase and anti-hyaluronidase; meanwhile, Rosa rugosa extract showed the highest anti-collagenase effect. Furthermore, the highest tyrosinase inhibitory activity was possessed by Spartina anglica extract. Conclusion: These findings may suggest that halophyte plants showing biological activities may be potent inhibitors of tyrosinase, elastase, collagenase, and hyaluronidase and could be useful for application in cosmeceuticals.

  • This study aimed to determine the swimming suitability of sea and to suggest methods to address the problems on sea water color and green plants growing on sediment in the artificial created swimming in the beach of southwestern Korea. Sea water samples were collected from January to December of 2010 and analysis for SS, COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$, TP, MPN, sediment IL, ORP and plants on sediment. The results showed that the sea water under the swimming suitability "level of management" based on the relating high levels of SS and TP, but still suitable for swimming on the basis of MPN. Improving exchange seawater flow, dredging, coating and chemical treatment of polluted sediments in addition to removal of point sources and restriction of non point sources in the study area could improve the sea water quality and swimming suitability of the sea.

  • Acetic acid and acetonitrile produced in the chemical process of petrochemical plants are used at high temperatures and pressures. They are exposed to harsh corrosive environments. The present investigation aimed to evaluate corrosion characteristics of metals with excellent corrosion resistance by performing immersion and electrochemical experiments with different composition ratios of acetic acid and acetonitrile in a high-temperature and high-pressure environment. Results of immersion experiment revealed that as acetic acid concentration increased, surface damage and corrosion also increased. In immersion experiments under all conditions, super austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08367) had the best corrosion resistance among various metals. The maximum damage depth under the most severe immersion conditions was observed to be 4.19 ㎛, which was approximately 25.25 ㎛ smaller than that of highly damaged stainless steel (UNS S31804). As a result of electrochemical experiments, electrochemical characteristics of various metals presented some differences with different composition ratios of acetic acid and acetonitrile. However, super austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08367) had the best corrosion resistance at a high pressure condition with a high concentration of acetic acid.

  • As the market becomes increasingly globalized and competition among companies increases in severity, various specialized organizations are participating across the process plant lifecycle, including the stages of design, construction, operation and maintenance, and dismantlement, in order to ensure efficiency and elevate competitiveness. In this regard, it is an important technical issue to develop services or information systems for sharing process plant data among participating organizations. ISO 15926 is an international standard for integration of lifecycle data for process plants including oil and gas facilities. ISO 15926 Part 7, a part of the ISO 15926 standard, specifies an implementation method called a facade that uses Web Services and ontology technologies for constructing plant data repositories and related services, with the aim of sharing lifecycle data of process plants. This paper discusses the ISO 15926-based prototype facade implemented for storing equipment data of nuclear power plants and servicing the data to interested organizations.

  • Whole plants of Zostera asiatica were extracted twice with acetone/methylene chloride (A+M) and methanol (MeOH) in turn. The combined crude extracts were evaporated in vacuo and then the residue was partitioned between water and methylene chloride. The aqueous layer was fractionated into $H_2O$ and n-butanol and then the organic layer was also fractionated into 85% aq. MeOH and n-hexane, successively. The crude extracts and their solvent fractions were evaluated for their inhibitory effect on growth of human cancer cells AGS, HT-29, MCF-7, and HT-1080 cells by MTT reduction assay. Among samples tested, 85% aq. MeOH and n-hexane fractions showed strong cytotoxic effect against AGS, HT-29, and MCF-7 cells. On the other hand, for HT-1080 cell, 85% aq. MeOH fraction exhibited the strongest cytotoxic effect.

  • Carotenoids being most important pigments among those occurring in nature, have received increased interest owing to their beneficial effects on human health. An effort is made to review marine carotenoids as important bioactive compounds with reference to their presence, chemical, and biofunctional benefits they afford. The potential beneficial effects of marine carotenoids were particularly focused on astaxanthin and fucoxanthin, major marine carotenoids found in marine animals and aquatic plants, respectively. Both carotenoids show strong antioxidant activity which is attributed to quenching singlet oxygen and scavenging free radicals. The potential role of the carotenoids as dietary antioxidants has been suggested as being one of the main mechanism by which they afford their beneficial health effects such as anticancer activity and anti-inflammatory effect. Only recently, antiobesity effect and antidiabetic effect have been noted as specific and novel bio-functions of fucoxanthin. Nutrigenomic study reveals that fucoxanthin induces uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression in white adipose tissue (WAT) mitochondria to lead to oxidation of fatty acids and heat production in WAT. Fucoxanthin improves insulin resistance and decreases blood glucose level, at least in part, through the down-regulation of tumor necrosis factor $\alpha$ ($TNF{\alpha}$) in WAT of animals.

  • Unlike land-based nuclear power plants, a marine or floating reactor is affected by external forces due to ocean conditions. These external forces can cause additional accelerations and affect each system and equipment of the marine reactor. Therefore, in designing a marine reactor and evaluating its performance and stability, a thermal hydraulic safety analysis code is necessary to consider the thermal hydrodynamic effects of ship motion. MARS, which is a reactor system analysis code, includes a dynamic motion model that can simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena under three-dimensional motion by calculating the body force term included in the momentum equation. In this study, it was verified that the dynamic motion model can simulate fluid motion with reasonable accuracy using conceptual problems. In addition, two modifications were made to the dynamic motion model; first, a user-supplied table to simulate a realistic ship motion was implemented, and second, the flow regime map determination algorithm was improved by calculating the volume inclination information at every time step if the dynamic motion model was activated. With these modifications, MARS could simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena under ocean motion more realistically.
