  • Many marine wastes such as seaweeds are casted aside at the seasides. So, the objective of this study is to apply the marine wastes to the concrete. To this end, mortar and concrete tests with the marine wastes have been conducted. The results of the present mortar and concrete tests indicate that the mortar and concrete with marine wastes admixtures exhibits very low permeability. The present study provides a firm base for the use of very low permeable concrete and the application of the marine structures and the submerged structures.

  • Since ocean dumping of wastes was permitted by law in 1900, the amount of wastes dumped into the sea has increased ten times for 15 years. As a result, the dumping sites has been deteriorated so much that the pollution has become a social problem. The 96 Protocol to the 72 London Convention, which requires the contracting party's stricter control on the disposal of wastes at sea, took effect on March 24, 2006. Therefore, our country has become confronted to the situation on which it cannot delay putting a restraint on ocean dumping. Hereupon, Korea Coast Guard (KCG) initiates a dumping sites recovery program. The program is intended to curb the amount of wastes dumped at sea and to recover the polluted dumping sites. In this paper, the current status of our country's management of ocean dumping of wastes is examined and the future condition is anticipated KCG's ocean dumping management measures are also presented.

  • In order to take measures for solving conflicts between the relevant Ministries of Korean government such as MOMAF(Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) and MAF(Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) and the relevant industry circles such as KSA(Korea Swine Association) and KODA(Korea Ocean Dumping Association) regarding the prohibition of ocean dumping of livestock excreta wastes from land, the present conditions of marine disposal of livestock excreta wastes and the standpoints of MOMAF, MAF, KSA and KODA were reviewed in Korea. As measures for solving the conflicts, the followings were proposed; A prior examination into the possibility of the treatment and/or disposal on shore for the total amount of livestock excreta wastes in Korea, measures for solving civil appeals against the problems arising from the treatment and/or disposal on shore of livestock excreta wastes, a prior examination into the possibility of the execution of the amendments to the relevant rules and regulations of Korean marine pollution prevention law for the prohibition of ocean dumping of livestock excreta wastes, measures for supporting the relevant industry circles such as KSA and KODA which were expected to suffer from the prohibition of ocean dumping, and an overall review of the national system for ocean dumping of terrestrial wastes in nationwide level.

  • Plastic wastes have a negative impact on marine environments; however, they can be used as carbon sources and habitats by certain microbes. Microbes in the marine plastisphere can migrate worldwide through the ocean and cause serious environmental problems when they encounter suitable environments. Therefore, efforts to investigate the microbes inhabiting the marine plastisphere are increasing. In the present study, fungal strains were isolated from plastic wastes buried in Korean sea sands and mudflats and identified using molecular and morphological analyses. Five species were identified that were previously unrecorded from South Korea: Cladosporium funiculosum, Neosetophoma poaceicola, Neosetophoma rosigena, Parasarocladium gamsii, and Trichoderma fomiticola. Their molecular phylogenies and morphological characteristics are described in this study.

  • Characteristics of household wastes production from fishing village in small island was investigated. Investigation was conducted in August and December to represent seasonal characteristics of summer and winter, respectively. Amount of household wastes production was 0.65 kg/capita·day and this is relatively low value compared with nationwide average. Food wastes, papers, vinyl and plastics are major part of combustible portion in household wastes. Composting is inappropriate method as a final disposal method in terms of C/N ratio calculated from elemental analysis. It is recommended that incineration can be appropriate way as a final disposal method of household wastes because low heating value of household wastes is equivalent to that of crude oil. The fraction of food wastes in household is considerably higher than the values obtained from other residential areas in nationwide. Thus, it is evaluated that household composting devices and vermicomposting facilities are necessary to reduce the amount of food wastes. It also can be evaluated that incineration is optimal method as disposal method of household wastes from fishing village except food wastes.

  • The purpose of this study is the improvement of a hook for the collection of marine wastes on the seabed, which is connected to the spring device. The performance of the modified hook was tested on the seabed around Wando island. The collection efficiency of the hook was improved especially in the rocky area on the seabed. A experiment in the study area is verified with seafloor images displayed by Side Scan Sonar. The modified hook can be used for the collection of marine wastes with the its less frequent loss in the sea.

  • In order to control and manage oil-tanker scrapped materials and wastes properly, the actual conditions and global trends of the treatment and the management of ship scrapped wastes were surveyed and some amendments to marine pollution prevention law of Korea were proposed. Global annual volume of scrapped ships was estimated to be about 22 million DWT and most of them were scrapped in 4 major ship scrap countries such as Bangladesh, China. India and Pakistan and in minor ship scrap countries such as Turkey, the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam. The industry of ship scrap has been mainly developed in developing countries or undeveloped countries rather than in advanced countries. Most of scrapped ships were found to be small or medium size below 1,000 GRT In Jellanam-Do and Jeju-Do of Korea. Most of ship scrap enterprise and all enterprises of collection, transfer, treatment and disposal for ship scrapped materials and wastes were shown to be small sized in Korea. The regulations and/or rules which shall prohibit or limit trans-boundary movement of overage oil-tankers for scrap from Korea to developing or undeveloped countries, and vice versa should be Included in marine pollution prevention law of Korea. the criteria of manpower and facilities for enterprise of ship scrap, and for enterprises of collection, transfer, treatment and disposal of ship scrapped materials and wastes should be stipulated in marine pollution prevention law of Korea. It is desirable to introduce the system or concept of recycle or reuse of ship scrapped materials and wastes on producer's responsibility into marine pollution prevention law of Korea.

  • Recently, a New Great Harbour Bridge between Mokpo City and Koha Island is planned to be built across Mokpo Inner Harbour, and Namak New Town is under construction adjacent to Mokpo. Citizels' concorn of and participation in 「Campaign for Shaping Mokpo into Beautiful Seaport」 are necessary to match the view of Mokpo harbour with natural scenery beautifully and with marine environment harmoniously. Citizens'ㄹ levels of consciousness of coastal and marine environment were ascertained through questionnaire surveys of local citizenry attitudes and opinions, and citizenry action plans for the conservation of coastal and marine environments around Mokpo harbour are suggested on the basis of the results of questionnaire surveys. Citizens' voluntary participations in local policy for the control of marine wastes production and in a campaign for the collections of marine debris and wastes around beaches and coastal areas are required. The operation of municipal sewage treatment plants is to be performed effectively and efficiently, and to be monitored and evaluated periodically by the general public, the local federation for environmental movement or NGO. The development and performance of marine environmental education programs and an enlightenment campaign for environment preservation are to be incessantly done in cooperation with local residents. Only when local government of Mokpo collects the public opinions and continues to shape Mokpo into international beautiful seaport in the direction of a reflex of public opinion, coastal and marine environment around Mokpo harbour can be kept in good condition with citizens' positive participation in citizenry long-term practical action plans for environment conservation.
