The success of new product is a key factor for getting competitive advantages. Marketing research has been investigating marketing capability, manufacturing technical capability, cross-functional integration, market knowledge competence, and competitive environment as the key success factors of new product advantage. Recently, the role of IT capability in enhancing new product advantage is assumed in the literature. However, the empirical studies on the role of IT capability are lacking. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of IT capability on new product competitive advantages and the relationship between IT capability and the key success factors for new product advantage. Conducting an empirical field study, the IT capability is shown to have a direct effect on new product competitive advantages, and to be also the key success factor to make up for marketing capability and manufacturing technical capability. This study develops a conceptual model on the role of IT capability in enhancing new product competitive advantages by integrating marketing research and IS research.
Purpose: This study aims to address the overlooked micro-level aspects within Smart Manufacturing (SM) research, rectifying the misalignment in manufacturing firms' estimation of their technological adoption capabilities. Drawing upon the Social-Technical Systems (STS) theory, this paper utilises innovation capability as a mediating variable, constructing a human-centric organizational model to bridge this research gap. Research design, data and methodology: This study collected data from 233 Chinese manufacturing firms via online questionnaires. Introducing innovation capability as a mediating variable, it investigates the impact of social-technical system dimensions (work design, social subsystems, and technical subsystems) on SM adoption willingness. Smart PLS 4.0 was employed for data analysis, and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) validated the theoretical model's assumptions. Results: In direct relationships, social subsystems, technical subsystems, and work design positively influence firms' innovation capabilities, which, in turn, positively impact SM adoption. However, innovation capability does not mediate the relationship between technical subsystems and SM adoption. Conclusions: This study focuses on the internal micro-level of organisational employees, constructing a human-centric framework that emphasises the interaction between organisations and technology. The study fills empirical gaps in Smart Manufacturing adoption, providing organisations with a means to examine the integration of employees and the organisational social-technical system.

Variation Analysis (VA) is used to simulate final product variation, taking into consideration part manufacturing and assembly variations. In VA, all the manufacturing and assembly processes are defined at the product design stage. Process Capability Data Bases (PCDB) provide information about measured variation from previous products and processes and allow the designer to apply this to the new product. A new challenge to this traditional approach is posed by the Industry 4.0 (I4.0) revolution, where Smart Manufacturing (SM) is applied. The manufacturing intelligence and adaptability characteristics of SM make present PCDBs obsolete. Current tolerance analysis methods, which are made for discrete assembly products, are also challenged. This paper discusses the differences expected in future factories relevant to VA, and the approaches required to meet this challenge. Current processes are mapped using I4.0 philosophy and gaps are analysed for potential approaches for tolerance analysis tools. Matching points of simulation capability and I4.0 intents are identified as opportunities. Applying conditional variations, incorporating levels of adjustability, and the un-suitability of present Monte Carlo simulation due to changed mass production characteristics, are considered as major challenges. Opportunities including predicting residual stresses in the final product and linking them to product deterioration, calculating non-dimensional performances and extending simulations for process manufactured products, such as drugs, food products etc. are additional winning aspects for next generation VA tools.

Recently, the role of IT infrastructure in enhancing new product advantage is assumed in the literature. However, the empirical studies on the role of IT infrastructure are lacking. The purpose of this study is to empirically exam the impacts of IT infrastructure on new product competitive advantage. In this study, IT infrastructure is conceptualized as the flexibility of IT infrastructure. Based on previous research, a conceptual model is established by incorporating the direct impact of IT infrastructure flexibility and its indirect impact through the key success factors on new product development. To empirically test the research model, data are surveyed from a pair of IS department and Marketing department of 92 consumer goods manufacturers. By employing PLS technique, the measurement reliability and reliability of research variables are tested and the path analysis is conducted to do the hypothesis testing. The path analysis shows that IT infrastructure flexibility has no direct effect on new product advantage, However, the indirect effect of IT infrastructure is found, which is mediated by marketing capability, manufacturing technical capability, cross-functional integration, and market orientation respectively. Hence, The flexible IT infrastructure increases cross-functional integration (H1), market orientation (H3), marketing capability (H5), and manufacturing technical capability (H6). All success factors of new product development excepts for competitive environment have a positive association with new product competitive advantages (from H10 to H14). Finally, the path from IT infrastructure flexibility to cross-functional integration, to market orientation, to market knowledge capability, and to new product advantage is found as the strongest path. These results indicate that the flexible IT infrastructure enhances information sharing with multiple departments and collaboration within a distributed innovation environment. The collaboration among departments positively affects the level of customer and competitor intelligence. The ability to obtain knowledge about customers and competitors makes firms to adapt to a changing environment quickly and to respond to customers' demands adequately. The flexible IT infrastructure also enhances the capability of organization to more rapidly respond to the changes in product design resulting in faster product development and reduced costs. In addition to, it enhances marketing capability by the two-way communications with customers and the analyses of various kinds of customer data. In brief, the finding of this study suggests that the flexible IT infrastructure allows many firms to pursue sustained new product competitive advantages. This study advances research on IT infrastructure in two important aspects. First, by Integrating marketing research and IS research, this study develops a conceptual model on the role of IT infrastructure in enhancing new product advantage. Second, it empirically finds the indirect impacts of IT infrastructure on new product advantage, which confirms the potential for the IS field to contribute to new product development research. The limitations of this study are also discussed to provide research directions for future research.
In this study, in order to confirm the relationship between technical innovation competence and corporate performance, the effect of technical innovation competence of small and medium-sized manufacturing companies on corporate performance was identified, and entrepreneurship, which plays a role as a driving force in triggering technical innovation competence, was analyzed to determine whether there is a mediating effect between them. To conduct the research, first, the research model was established by examining previous studies on technical innovation competence, entrepreneurship, and corporate performance. Second, an on-line and offline survey was conducted for employees in companies after constructing a questionnaire that can verify the hypothesis suitable for the research model. Third, the hypothesis was verified by performing validity and reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis using a statistical program. Results of this study, first, it was found that R&D competence and technology innovation system, which are elements of technical innovation competence, had a significant effect on financial performance, and technology innovation system and technology accumulation capacity, had a significant effect on non-financial performance. Second, it was analyzed that entrepreneurship has a mediating effect in both R&D capability, technological innovation system and technology accumulation capability, which are elements of technical innovation capability, and financial and non-financial performance, elements of corporate performance.
The objective of this research is to develop a manufacturability measurement model for process and material screening. The process and material screening is the key requirement for implementing the Design for Manufacturability (Concurrent Engineering). A computerized system realizing this model then is developed to aid designers. Identification of the key factors which influence technical manufacturability, decision variables and their characteristics, conceptual framework for implementing the model are suggested. Manufacturability measure for quantifying the consistency of between the product requirements and the manufacturing capability is important contribution of this research. The focus is on net shape manufacturing process such as diecasting, forging, metal forming and injection molding.
The purpose of this research was to test the effects of technological innovation capability and technology commercialization capability on new product performance of the companies in electronics industry and the moderating role of perceived usefulness of government R&D support. For this study, Research data were collected through questionnaire instruments from the sample of 346 employees in 17 electronics companies of metropolitan area. The 305 sample was selected and analyzed by hierarchical regression technique. The results showed that technological innovation capability and technology commercialization capability had a positive effect on new product performance. And also found out perceived usefulness of government R&D support had the moderate roles between only technical innovation system our of three technological innovation capability factors and new product performance, and also between only manufacturing capability our of three technological commercialization capability factors and new product performance. With the research results, the implications for electronics company were discussed, and the directions for future research were suggested.
We explore the determinants of long-term relationship between the buyer and the supplier to help suppliers develope a strategy to build long-term relationship with their buyers. Based upon an extensive literature review, we propose three droops of independent variables which may affect long-term relationship, including (a) environmental factors (product complexity, product importance, source dependence, price sensitivity), (b) relational factors(trust, commitment, satisfaction, intention of expansion), (c) operational performance(quality, delivery, cost capability, technical knowhow). The buyer's actual period of relationship with its main supplier is used as a dependent variable. Using hierarchical multiple regression analysis, we empirically test hypotheses, analysing a sample of 290 manufacturing firms in the U.S. The statistical results indicate that the buyer's source dependence, price sensitivity and the supplier's commitment play a significant role in establishing long-term relationship between the buyer and the supplier. However, the supplier's cost capability and technical knowhow in operational performance negatively affect long-term relationship in contrast with our hypotheses. Due to this controversial result, we divide the sample group Into dual sourcing and multiple sourcing environments and reconduct regression analysis in a post hoc manner. The findings show that the supplier's cost capability and technical knowhow are negatively associated with the length of relationship only in the multiple sourcing environment. The results may confirm that both parties' opportunistic behavior is more salient in the multiple sourcing environment than in the single sourcing environment.
The charcoal is known to have gas adsorption capability and is used frequently to mitigate the unpleasant smells from food and clothing. It is also used to treat water to remove dissolved organic and inorganic substances. In this paper, we applied the several different kinds of charcoals to the papers in three different ways to investigate if charcoal application method affects its gas adsorption capability. Wet end addition, making multiply, and coating method were tested. Specific ethylene gas adsorption capabilities were measured. Experimental results shows that manufacturing conditions of the charcoal itself changed its gas adsorption properties. The boxes used for agricultural produces, and the packaging paper for flowers are to be well fitted application for the charcoal added paper. Mulch paper, which needs opacity and air permeability with proper strength properties, is another candidate for the application of charcoal added paper.
Residual stresses are inherently introduced into the engineering components during manufacturing including rolling, forging, bending and welding processes. Excessive residual stresses are known to be detrimental to the proper integrity and performance of components. Neutron diffraction has become a well-established technique for the determination of residual stresses in welds. The deep penetration capability of neutrons into most metallic materials makes neutron diffraction a powerful tool for the residual stress measurements through the thickness of the weld specimen. Furthermore, the unique volume-averaged bulk characteristic of the scattering beam and mapping capability in three dimensions is suitable for the engineering purpose. In this presentation, the neutron diffraction measurements of the residual stresses will be introduced and measurement results will highlighted in thick weld plates.
