  • The machine vision has been applied to a number of industrial applications for quality control and automations to improve the manufacturing processes. In this paper, the automation system using the machine vision is developed, which is applicable to the marking process in a steel production process line. The working environment is very harsh to workers so that the automatic system in the steel industry is required increasingly. The developed automatic marking system consists of several mechanical and electrical elements such as the laser position detecting sensor system for a structured laser beam which is projected to the billet in order to detect the geometry of the billet. An image processing algorithm has been developed to percept the two center positions of a camera and a billet, respectively, and to align two centers. A series of experiments has been conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The results show that two centers of the camera and the billet could be detected very well and differences between two center positions could be also decreased via the proposed tracking algorithm.

  • Precision motion stages used in the manufacturing process of flat-panel displays have inevitably low settling performance due to their huge mass and bulky structures. In order to improve the settling performance, several methods of frame vibration compensation have been developed so far. These methods are used to cancel the vibration by imposing a counter force or modifying the resonance mode of the frame of the stage. To compensate the frame vibration, high force actuators are required. In this paper, a mighty voice coil actuator is proposed to generate the counter force against the frame vibration. The proposed voice coil actuator has an axis-symmetric rectangular structure to achieve a large force with simple and low cost fabrication. Also, the voice coil actuator allows radial clearance up to ${\pm}4mm$. Using an optimized design process and a magnetic circuit model, the power consumption is minimized while the required force is obtained. With a power of 322 W, the VCA has been designed to have a maximum force of 574 N with a force constant of 164 N/A. Experimental results verified the force constant of the fabricated voice coil actuator is well matched with the designed value.

  • This paper first presents two supply chain design problems: 1) a factory location setting and factory selection problem, and 2) a factory location setting and factory/supplier selection problem. The first involves a number of location known retailers choosing one factory to supply their demands from a number of factories whose locations are to be determined. The goal is to minimize the transportation and manufacturing cost to satisfy the demands. The problem is then augmented into the second problem, where the procurement cost of the raw materials from a chosen material supplier (from a number of suppliers) is considered for each factory. Economic beneficial is taken into account in the cost evaluation. Therefore, the partner selections will influence the cost of the supply chain significantly. To solve these problems, an agent gaming and genetic algorithm hybrid method (AGGAHM) is proposed. The AGGAHM consecutively and alternatively enable and disable the advancement of agent gaming and the evolution of genetic computation. Computation results on solving a number of examples by the AGGAHM were compared with those from methods of a general genetic algorithm and a mutual frozen genetic algorithm. Results showed that the AGGAHM outperforms the methods solely using genetic algorithms. In addition, various parameter settings are tested and discussed to facilitate the supply chain designs.

  • Stereolithography (SLA) is a technique using a laser beam to cure a photopolymer liquid resin with three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) data, The accuracy of the prototype, the build time, and the cured properties of the resins are controlled by the SLA process parameters such as the size of the laser beam, scan velocity, hatch spacing, and layer thickness, In particular, the size of the laser beam is the most important parameter in SLA, This study investigated the curing properties of photopolymers as a function of the laser beam size, The cure width and depth were measured either on a single cure line or at a single cure layer for various hatch spacings and laser beam sizes, The cure depth ranged from 0.23 to 0.34 mm and was directly proportional to the beam radius, whereas the cure width ranged from 0.42 to 1.07 mm and was inversely proportional to the beam radius, The resulting surface roughness ranged from 1.12 to $2.23{\mu}m$ for a ratio of hatch spacing to beam radius in the range 0.5-2.0 at a beam radius of 0.17 mm and a scan velocity of 125 mm/sec.

  • Measurement technology plays an important role in discrete manufacturing industry. Probe-type coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) are normally used to capture the geometry of part features. The measured points are then fit to verify a specified geometry by using the least squares method (LSQ). However, it occasionally overestimates the tolerance zone, which leads to the rejection of some good parts. To overcome this drawback, minimum zone approaches defined by the ANSI Y14.5M-1994 standard have been extensively pursued for zone fitting in coordinate form literature for such basic features as plane, circle, cylinder and sphere. Meanwhile, complex features such as torus have been left to be dealt-with by the use of profile tolerance definition. This may be impractical when accuracy of the whole profile is desired. Hence, the true deviation model of torus is developed and then formulated as a minimax problem. Next, a relatively new and simple population based evolutionary approach, particle swarm optimization (PSO), is applied by imitating the social behavior of animals to find the minimum tolerance zone torusity. Simulated data with specified torusity zones are used to validate the deviation model. The torusity results are in close agreement with the actual torusity zones and also confirm the effectiveness of the proposed PSO when compared to those of the LSQ.

  • More than 76% of occupational accidents occur in small and medium sized enterprises(SME) employing less than 50 workers, due to the lack of safety and health systems, and carelessness of workers and owners. Timely Technical Guidance(TTG) project of Korea Occupational Safety & Heath Agency(KOSHA) for SME was initiated to analyze and inform accident causes just after accidents occur. Improvement direction of TTG project is suggested through situation and performance analysis on TTG services conducted in 2012. KOSHA provided TTS services on 15,571 SMEs(suffering at least one accident in 2012), through which the working day losses from recurrence resulted in 19.0%p, 14.5%p and 31.3%p decreases in manufacturing, services and construction businesses, respectively.

  • Nowadays developments in the field of laminated composite structures with piezoelectric have attracted significant attention of researchers due to their wide range of applications in engineering such as sensors, actuators, vibration suppression, shape control, noise attenuation and precision positioning. Due to large number of parameters associated with its manufacturing and fabrication, composite structures with piezoelectric display a considerable amount of uncertainty in their material properties. The present work investigates the effect of the uncertainty on the free vibration response of piezoelectric laminated composite plate. The lamina material properties have been modeled as independent random variables for accurate prediction of the system behavior. System equations have been derived using higher order shear deformation theory. A finite element method in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation is employed to obtain the secondorder statistics of the natural frequencies. Typical results are presented for all edges simply supported piezoelectric laminated composite plates to show the influence of scattering in material properties on the second order statistics of the natural frequencies. The results have been compared with those available in literature.

  • The supplier selection problem is perhaps the most important component of the purchasing function. Some of the common and influential criteria in the selection of a supplier include quality, price, delivery, and service. These evaluation criteria often conflict, however, and it is frequently impossible to find a supplier that excels in all areas. In addition, some of the criteria are quantitative and some are qualitative. Thus, a methodology is needed that can capture both subjective and objective evaluation measures. The Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) is a decision-making method for ranking alternative courses of action when multiple criteria must be considered. This paper proposes the AHP-based approach which can structure the supplier selection process and the achievements-based procedure which can allocate order quantities for the selected suppliers In automotive part manufacturers. Also, through the practical case of 'D' automotive part manufacturing company, we shows that the proposed AHP based supplier selection approach and the achievements-based allocation procedure of order quantity can be successfully applied for supplier selection and order quantity allocation problems.

  • Shipbuilding is a complex industry which contains a lot of knowledge, technology, and utilities. Hence, the necessity of the PLM (Product Life-cycle Management) system which manages life-cycle information of marine product has been increased. So, many studies related to shipbuilding PLM have been preceded, and there are some cases to be built. To implement collaboration and concurrent engineering of ship designing and manufacturing, interoperability of product data in heterogeneous system is required. Also, sharing and reusing knowledge are important for innovation of business process and productivity of enterprises. Even though many studies related interoperability of product data are going on in varies domain, the application to shipbuilding is deficient. This paper proposes a methodology for management and interconnection of BOM data based on ontology in heterogeneous PLM system of shipbuilding. Using Prot$\'{e}$g$\'{e}$-OWL, we built simple domain ontology of shipbuilding industry, and then, we integrated product information of shipbuilding BOM which is represented with different ontologies. We verified possibility of integration of shipbuilding BOM in heterogeneous PLM, using ontology.

  • Today's engineering design is carried out in a distributed fashion geographically or physically. This places new requirements on the computational environments such as efficient integration and collaboration. With the advances of the Internet and Network environment recently, many researches have been proposed and at the same time, Web-based distributed design gives to a new paradigm in design and manufacturing fields. That is, Web-based technologies lead to reduce the product development times and to ensure a competitive product in order to exchange and interact of real-time design information that integrates the distributed design environment between departments as well as companies via Internet and Web. So, an efficient data communication for design information sharing is the foundation for collaborative systems in the distributed environment. Design data communication techniques such as CORBA, DCOM and RMI have been considered in the existing research but they have some problems that are limitations of interoperability and firewall problems in the Web. Therefore, this paper presents a Web-based distributed design application where distributed design information resources are integrated and exchanged using Web Services for supporting XML and HTTP without the interoperability and firewall problems through the 330K VLCC case.
