  • The study was designed to lay the ground for effective guidance toward adaptive coping behavior by finding out differences in ego-resiliency in terms of personality types in the Murphy-Meisgeier Type Indicator for Children(MMTIC). For the study, personality types and ego-resiliency of 180 fifth- and sixth-grade students from 3 elementary schools located in Busan were measured. The instrument for personality types was MMTIC, which was developed by Meisgeier and Murphy in the US in 1990 and standardized in Korea in 1993 by Jungtaek Kim and Hyesook Shim. In order to measure Ego-Resiliency, Block & Kremen(1996)'s Ego-Resiliency scale translated and remodified by Sungkyung Yoo(2004) was used. The collected data were analyzed using ANOVA. The study found the followings: Firstly, according to the children's preference for personality types, participants' ego-resiliency scores appeared significantly higher in 'Extraversion', 'iNtuition', and 'Feeling' than in 'Introversion', 'Sensing', and 'Thinking' respectively. There was no significant difference in the score between in 'Judging' and 'Perceiving'. Secondly, according to function types of MMTIC, the participants' ego-resiliency score in 'iNtuition-Feeling' type showed the highest among scores in the other three types. The score in 'iNtuition-Feeling' type was significantly higher than 'Sensing-Thinking', 'Sensing-Feeling', and 'iNtuition-Thinking' type respectively.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find the differences of personality types and learning styles of general students(69) and the gifted in mathematics(66) and sciences(66). 132 subjects, whose academic achievements are in top 1 % level in elementary schools, were selected from the gifted center of the university in Busan. MMTIC(Murphy-Meisgeir Type Indicator for Children) was used to classify personal style inventory(E-I, S-N, T-F and J-P). Adapted form of Grasha & Reichmann's learning style was used to classify 3 pairs: dependent-independent, competitive-collaborative, avoidant-participant. In this paper, we were mainly concerned with the differences of learning styles, and personal types of three groups according to as indices, functions and temperament. One of our results was that there were differences of personality types between general students and the gifted in mathematics and sciences according to as indices, functions and temperament. And there were differences of learning style between three groups according to as dependent-independent, and avoidant-participant.. The gifted in mathematics and sciences prefer to independent and participant learning style in comparison with general students. Finally, there were relation of personality types and learning styles. According to functions and temperament of MMTIC, SF (sensation-feeling) and NF(intuition-feeling) type students prefer to collaborative and participant styles in comparison with ST (sensation-thought) and NT(intuition-thought) type students. And NT(intuition-thought) type students prefer to avoidant styles in comparison with SF(sensation-feeling) and NF(intuition-feeling) type students.

  • The method of being composed of small groups has a strong influence on mathematics and cooperative learning and therefore, the group classification should be made in a way of considering not only a learner's cognitive factor but also a affective factor in order to maximize the effects. In this research, we regarded personality as the important standard of the group classification for cooperative learning and tried to find out the influence on the mathematical attitude and achievement in mathematics by means of conducting mathematics and cooperative learning according to the personality types. In order to resolve this problem, we performed the cooperative learning of small group subject to the students at year 6 in an elementary school by making up a similar personality type of group and a different personality type of group through MMTIC examination, and also tried to find out any significant difference in terms of mathematical attitude and achievement in mathematics between two groups. The results obtained in this research are as follows; First, organizing groups in accordance with personality types did not affect on mathematical attitude. Although there were some positive opinions towards mathematics and cooperative learning, the both similar personality type of group and different personality type of group showed no significant difference in terms of mathematical attitude between two groups. Second, organizing groups in accordance with personality types showed positive effects on the achievement in mathematics. The similar personality type of group showed the better achievement in mathematics than the different personality type of group.
