  • A jamming design scheme to disturb target position estimation of a bistatic multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) radar system is presented. The proposed method exploits the received signals from distributed multiple electronic sensors and combines them to produce a jamming signal. The proposed algorithm can eliminate the target by transmitting the delayed sum or the weighted sum of the received senor signals. Simulation results confirm the performance of the proposed method.

  • Reliable detection and parameter estimation of a radar cross section(RCS) fluctuating target have been known as a difficult task. To reduce the effect of RCS fluctuation, various diversity techniques have been considered. This paper presents a new method for synthesizing a covariance matrix applicable to a coherent multi-input multi-output(MIMO) radar with frequency diversity. It is achieved by efficiently combining covariance matrices corresponding to different carrier frequencies such that the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) in the combined covariance matrix is maximized. The value of a synthesized covariance matrix is assessed by examining the phase curves of its entries and the improvement on direction of arrival(DOA) estimation.

  • For the issue of subsurface target localization by reverse projection, a new approach of target localization with different distances based on symmetric sub-array multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed in this paper. By utilizing the particularity of structure of the two symmetric sub-arrays, the received signals are jointly reconstructed to eliminate the distance information from the steering vectors. The distance-independent direction of arrival (DOA) estimates are acquired, and the localizations of subsurface targets with different distances are realized by reverse projection. According to the localization mechanism and application characteristics of the proposed algorithm, the grid zooming method based on spatial segmentation is used to optimize the locaiton efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed localization method and optimization scheme.

  • Compressive Sensing (CS) has been widely studied as a promising technique in many applications. The CS theory tells that a signal that is known to be sparse in a specific basis can be reconstructed using convex optimization from far fewer samples than traditional methods use. In this paper, we apply CS technique to Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems which employ uniform linear arrays (ULA). Especially, we investigate the problem of finding the direction-of-arrival (DOA) using CS technique and compare the performance with the conventional adaptive MIMO techniques. The results suggest the CS method can provide the similar performance with far fewer snapshots than the conventional adaptive techniques.

  • In this paper, we apply the 2-D Matrix Pencil Method(MPM) to the estimation of the direction of arrival(DOA) of multiple signals of interest(SOIs) in bistatic MIMO radar. The 2-D MPM shows remarkable performance under a low SNR environment and low computational complexity to estimate the DOA of multiple SOIs. Also, it is possible to estimate the direction of departure(DOD) which is an angle from transmitter to target. To verify the proposed algorithm, we applied the proposed algorithm to a uniformly spaced linear array(ULA) and compared the RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) of DOA and DOD under the various SNR with those of the 2-D Capon algorithm.

  • Future spaceborne satellite synthetic aperture radar(SAR) system is expected to acquire high-resolution images over wide swath areas. Conventional SAR systems suffer from ambiguity problems in both azimuth and range directions that lead to image quality degradation. Recently, multiple input multiple output(MIMO) SAR techniques having multiple orthogonal waveforms are proposed to overcome the conventional ambiguity problems in wide-swath imaging modes. In this paper, noisy orthogonal frequency division multiplex(OFDM) waveforms are developed to reduce the ambiguity problems and suppress the image quality degradation. SAR simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique for wide-swath SAR imaging.

  • This paper describes and analyzes a various generation methods of the mutually orthogonal polyphase sequences with low cross-correlation peak sidelobe and low autocorrelation peak sidelobe levels. The mutual orthogonality is the key requirement of multi-static or MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Output) radar systems which provides the good target detection and tracking performance. The polyphase sequences, which are generated by SA(Simulated Annealing) and GA(Genetic Algorithm), have been analyzed with ACF(Autocorrelation Function) PSL(Peak Sidelobe Level) and CCF(Crosscorrelation Function) level at the matched filter output. Also, the ambiguity function has been introduced and simulated for comparing Doppler properties of each sequence. We have suggested the phase selection rule for applying multi-static or MIMO systems.

  • Frequency-modulated continuous wave(FMCW) radars with array antennas are widely used because of their light weight and relatively high resolution. A usual approach for the joint range and angle estimation of a target using an array FMCW radar is to create a range-angle matrix with the deramped received signal, and subsequently apply two-dimensional(2D) frequency estimation methods such as 2D fast Fourier transform on the range-angle matrix. However, such frequency estimation approaches cause bias errors since the frequencies in the range-angle matrix are not independent. Therefore, we propose a new maximum likelihood-based algorithm for joint range and angle estimation of targets using array FMCW radar, and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves the Cram?r-Rao bounds, both for range as well as angle estimation.

  • This paper is made to suggest a future strategy for the Korean High Resolution Wide Swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (HRWS SAR) satellite development by surveying the current trends for the SAR satellite technologies. From the survey, the latest SAR technology trends are revealed of using Digital Beam-Forming (DBF), SCan-On-Receive (SCORE), Displaced Phase Center Antenna (DPCA), interferometry, and polarimetry for exploiting the SAR imagery. Based on the latest SAR technology trends and the foreign HRWS SAR development cases, the strategy for the future HRWS Korean SAR satellite development is suggested to develop the DPCA and SCORE technologies by using the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-6 (KOMPSAT-6) which is going to launch in a few years, and consequently to develop the HRWS SAR satellites which can monitor the whole Earth at weekly intervals.

  • In AD-MUSIC algorithm, DOD/DOA can be estimated without computationally expensive two-dimensional search. In this paper, to further reduce the computational complexity, the Newton type method has been applied to one-dimensional search. In this paper, we summarize the formulation of the AD-MUSIC algorithm, and present how to apply Newton-type iteration to AD-MUSIC algorithm for improvement of the accuracy of the DOD/DOA estimates. Numerical results are presented to show that the proposed scheme is efficient in the viewpoints of computational burden and estimation accuracy.
